School Trusts Companies in Cambridge: 61 Active Firms (2026)

School trusts in Cambridge operate primary and secondary education across academy groups and local school networks.

Buying centres sit around governance, finance, estates, safeguarding, curriculum, and school administration rather than a single commercial buyer. The typical customer base is local and public-service oriented: pupils and families are the end users, while trustees, school leaders, staff, and public-sector education stakeholders shape priorities. Engagements tend to look like ongoing operating responsibility rather than short projects, with central teams coordinating policies, budgets, premises, staff processes, and classroom administration across academy or school-service structures. Smaller organisations may operate through lean central functions; larger groups need more formal service management and internal reporting.

Cambridge has 61 actively trading school trust organisations, a small local cohort rather than a broad commercial services market. The reported employment footprint is 63 staff in total, so the visible headcount base is modest and appears concentrated in central functions rather than classroom staffing alone. That shape matters for researchers: many entities appear to be operationally present but administratively lean, with governance and school-service duties carried through compact teams. Local demand is therefore likely to be driven by compliance workload, estates maintenance, finance administration, and safeguarding process rather than discretionary expansion budgets.

Academy-trust operating models sit inside a public-service accountability frame, even where the organisation is structured as a multi-school group or services vehicle. Governance, safeguarding, finance, estates, curriculum and administration are not peripheral functions; they define what the organisation must evidence to stakeholders. Procurement and system changes therefore tend to be slower than in private-sector SMEs, because decisions have to satisfy trustees, school leaders, staff and public-sector education stakeholders. The market structure is also local: relationships with pupils, families and staff shape reputational risk as much as formal reporting lines.

Future change appears more likely to come through operational consolidation than through a wave of high-revenue entrants. The cohort is weighted towards smaller administrative entities, so shared services, merged back-office functions and more formal governance processes may matter more than market expansion. Demand for finance, estates and safeguarding capability tends to persist because those duties do not disappear when pupil rolls or funding conditions shift. Larger groups may professionalise central teams, while smaller trusts remain sensitive to workload, compliance expectations and the availability of experienced education administrators.

Key facts

27% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (17 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

Cambridge school trusts operate across primary and secondary education, including academy groups and local school networks.

Buying patterns tend to centre on school operations, staffing, estates and administration rather than a conventional commercial market.

Employee count is a useful companion to revenue when comparing school-trust operators, because staffing and turnover do not always move together.

How Cambridge school trusts companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

School trusts do not behave like conventional revenue-led suppliers. Income is usually tied to education funding, service arrangements and central cost recovery across schools rather than transactional sales. Their work is operating schools and shared services: governance packs, budget setting, estates maintenance, safeguarding processes, curriculum administration, HR workflows and parent or pupil communications. Supplier engagement is usually annualised or contract-based, with attention on cost control, auditability and service continuity. A small trust may buy a single managed service or software licence for a central team; a larger school group may need common processes across several sites and committees.

Who they sell to

Their end users are pupils and families, but buying authority normally sits elsewhere. Trustees, chief executives, headteachers, school business managers, finance leads, safeguarding leads, curriculum leads and estates managers all tend to influence decisions, depending on the category. A safeguarding workflow, for example, may need operational approval from school leaders and governance confidence from trustees; an estates contract may sit with finance and premises teams. Procurement is usually direct for lower-risk services, framework-led or tendered for larger commitments, and shaped by school terms, annual budgeting and committee timetables rather than a private-sector quarterly buying rhythm.

What they buy

Most school trusts tend to spend on systems and services that keep administration consistent across sites. Common categories include finance and budget planning software, HR and payroll support, governance portals, safeguarding case management, management information systems, cyber security, backup, device management, parent communication tools and reporting dashboards. Services spend often covers audit, legal advice, recruitment, staff training, health and safety, building surveys, cleaning, catering and facilities maintenance. For outbound sellers, the useful distinction is between central-office pain and school-site pain: central teams want control and evidence trails, while site leaders usually care about workload, response times and whether staff will actually use the process.

Why and how to sell to them

School trust buyers tend to evaluate vendors when workload, compliance evidence or service consistency becomes difficult to manage through spreadsheets, email and informal local practice. Triggers include a new school joining a group, a senior operations or finance appointment, an internal review, a safeguarding process change, an estates backlog, or a move to shared services. Messaging usually lands better when it is framed around reducing duplicated administration, improving evidence for trustees, controlling supplier spend, or making site-level issues visible to a small central team. Claims about growth or disruption are less useful than proof that implementation will not distract staff during term time.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many school trusts companies are there in the Cambridge?
Around 61 actively-trading school trusts companies are registered in the Cambridge. Of those, 0 report turnover above £5M in their most recent filed accounts.
What counts as a school trusts company in this list?
A company is included when its public website and filed activity descriptions indicate it sells school trusts products or services as its primary business — not just because of the SIC code it picked at incorporation. Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest school trusts companies in the Cambridge?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest school trusts companies in the Cambridge appear at the top of the table. About 0 of the 61 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do school trusts companies in the Cambridge actually do?
School trusts do not behave like conventional revenue-led suppliers. Income is usually tied to education funding, service arrangements and central cost recovery across schools rather than transactional sales. Their work is operating schools and shared services: governance packs, budget setting, estates maintenance, safeguarding processes, curriculum administration, HR workflows and parent or pupil communications. Supplier engagement is usually annualised or contract-based, with attention on cost control, auditability and service continuity. A small trust may buy a single managed service or software licence for a central team; a larger school group may need common processes across several sites and committees.
How does Cambridge school trusts compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of school trusts populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical school trusts companies in the Cambridge?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. The median actively-trading school trusts firm employs around 2 people, and median UK turnover across the list is roughly £23k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established school trusts companies?
17 of the 61 actively-trading school trusts companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the Cambridge list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
