Actuarial Services Companies in the UK: 16 Active Firms (2026)
Actuarial services companies in the UK model financial risk, pensions, insurance liabilities and capital requirements for regulated organisations.
Buying centres tend to sit in insurance finance, pensions governance and prudential risk teams, rather than general procurement. Buyers are usually insurers, pension scheme trustees, financial services groups, public bodies and professional services firms that need specialist judgement on liabilities, assumptions and reporting. Engagements skew towards advisory projects, retained review work and model validation, with partner-led delivery and qualified actuarial input carrying more weight than platform features. The commercial pattern is therefore closer to expert consulting than high-volume outsourcing, with small and mid-sized practices selling trust, sign-off comfort and repeatable technical process.

The UK cohort is small, with 16 actively trading actuarial services firms. Reported headcount totals 273, pointing to teams built around qualified modelling, pensions and insurance-reserving staff rather than large delivery centres. That employment footprint fits the service model: a small number of practices have moved beyond the micro-consultancy stage, while many appear to serve recurring client needs through partner-led assignments, technical reviews and regulatory reporting support. Revenue concentration is likely to sit with practices handling insurer reserving, pension funding and capital work.
Regulatory exposure sits mainly with the clients rather than the adviser, but it still shapes the work. Insurers need actuarial input for reserving, capital adequacy and governance under prudential, conduct and reporting regimes. Pension scheme work is also shaped by trustee duties, funding reviews and audit scrutiny. The result is a market where credibility, documentation and professional judgement matter more than sales reach; small consultancies can compete when they hold specialist knowledge in longevity, reserving or public-sector scheme work.
Demand appears likely to remain tied to insurers’ capital work, pension scheme governance and advisory reviews triggered by changes in funding assumptions, longevity expectations and audit scrutiny. Growth tends to be constrained by scarce qualified labour and the credibility needed to sign off specialist work, so the market is unlikely to behave like a volume consultancy category. More routine modelling may move into standardised tools, but clients still need independent judgement when assumptions are disputed or liabilities carry regulatory consequences.

Key facts
About 12% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (2 of 16 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (1 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Actuarial-services firms turn assumptions on liabilities, claims, longevity and capital into risk advice for regulated organisations.
Insurers and pension schemes are core buyers, with work commonly tied to reserving and solvency planning.
The segment sits close to regulatory and governance processes because capital requirements and long-term liabilities need independent modelling.

How UK actuarial services companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Actuarial services firms usually earn through time-and-materials consulting, fixed-fee reviews and retained advisory support. Revenue comes from judgement-heavy deliverables: liability valuations, reserving reviews, funding advice, capital modelling, assumption testing, model validation and board or trustee papers. Some package recurring monitoring around valuation cycles or regulatory reporting, but pure subscription income is unusual. Pricing tends to follow the seniority of the actuaries involved, the risk attached to the opinion, and the documentation burden. The service is part technical modelling, part assurance; clients pay for defensible assumptions and accountable review, not just calculation capacity.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually Chief Actuaries, CFOs, Finance Directors, pensions directors, trustee boards, Heads of Risk and audit-facing finance teams. Insurance and pensions work is rarely bought through a casual self-serve channel; most firms win through referrals, direct senior selling, framework-style panels or formal tenders where independence and credentials are checked. Contract size tends to be set by the complexity of the liabilities and the level of sign-off expected, rather than by the buyer’s headcount. Sales cycles can be elongated by trustee meetings, audit timetables and budget approvals, so timing matters more than volume outreach.
What they buy
Most actuarial practices tend to spend on tools and services that protect billable expert time and reduce review risk. Relevant categories include practice management, time recording, proposal workflow, CRM, document management, secure file exchange, cyber security, data quality, model governance, cloud infrastructure and analytics environments for scenario work. They also buy professional indemnity support, specialist legal and accounting advice, recruitment for qualified actuaries and statistical modellers, continuing professional development, and marketing support aimed at technical buyers. Generic productivity claims are less persuasive than evidence that a vendor can handle confidential client material and audit trails.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial triggers usually come from pressure on assumptions, reporting timetables, governance scrutiny or a move from founder-led consulting to a wider team. New mandates from insurers or pension schemes, partner hires, a first public-sector tender, headcount growth in modelling roles or a change in reporting requirements can all create buying windows. Outbound works better when it is specific to the risk of rework, missed deadlines, version-control failures, utilisation leakage or weak evidence trails. The pitch should usually be framed around preserving expert time and making client-facing assurance easier to evidence, rather than around generic scale or automation.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
