Advanced Manufacturing Companies in the UK: 51,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Advanced manufacturing companies make high-value products using advanced materials, automation and precision processes across the UK industrial base.
Buying centres tend to sit with operations, engineering, procurement and compliance teams rather than a software-style budget holder. Suppliers sell to aerospace and automotive tiers, industrial OEMs, regulated medical-device producers, agri-tech manufacturers, battery supply chains and space-related engineering customers. Engagements are usually project-led: design-for-manufacture work, tooling, qualification, process automation, specialist components or production capacity. Mid-market manufacturers and larger enterprises are the clearest fit, because buyers need capital budgets, quality systems and export or product-compliance capability. Sales cycles tend to be evidence-heavy, with pilots, site visits and supplier assurance before volume contracts.
51,433 advanced-manufacturing companies are actively trading in the UK, making the cohort sizeable by industrial standards rather than a narrow deep-tech niche. A smaller commercial layer is visible in the 3,874 firms with turnover above £5M, while 8,101 were incorporated since 2022, suggesting continued company formation around production technology, materials and specialist engineering. Across firms with headcount information, total reported employment is 15,138 people. That employment footprint should be read alongside the turnover split: many firms remain small engineering or process-technology businesses, while the revenue-ranked end of the list is more likely to carry formal quality, procurement and export functions.
No sector-wide licence governs advanced manufacturing, so compliance depends on the product, process and customer market. UKCA and CE marking are central for regulated goods such as machinery, electrical equipment, electromagnetic compatibility, equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres, lifts, measuring instruments and medical devices. The government’s sector plan groups the market around advanced materials, aerospace, agri-tech, automotive, batteries and space, which helps explain why procurement rules, certification evidence and quality documentation vary across the same industrial category. Public-sector innovation centres and digital-adoption programmes matter as market infrastructure, but they are not licensing bodies.
Future demand appears tied less to any particular end-market cycle than to productivity pressure, supply-chain resilience and compliance evidence. Buyers tend to favour suppliers that can document repeatability, traceability and quality assurance, which may keep barriers to entry higher than in lighter engineering services. Early-commercial firms will still find routes through prototyping and specialist subcontracting, but scale-up scarcity is likely where production capacity, certification and working capital have to arrive together. Consolidation may therefore come through capability gaps rather than simple land-grab behaviour, especially around automation, materials know-how and regulated production.

Key facts
About 7% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (3,874 of 51,433 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
15% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (8,101 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The UK Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan defines six frontier industries: advanced materials, aerospace, agri-tech, automotive, batteries and space.
Product compliance depends on the product type, with UKCA and CE marking requirements covering machinery, electrical equipment, electromagnetic compatibility, equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres, lifts, measuring instruments and medical devices.
Government investment material puts UK advanced manufacturing at over 760,000 jobs and £82 billion in annual GVA, with £12.9 billion of business R&D in 2023.
ONS reports UK manufacturers’ product sales of £452.2 billion in 2024, down £14.5 billion (-3.1%) from £466.7 billion in 2023.
The UK’s share of global manufacturing value added fell from 3.1% in 2000 to 1.9% in 2022, while China’s rose from 6.4% to 31%.

How UK advanced manufacturing companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a blend of engineering services, non-recurring project fees, tooling charges and contracted production, rather than a pure catalogue sale. Earlier engagements may cover feasibility work, design-for-manufacture, prototype runs, process validation or automation studies; later ones move into unit-priced components, capacity commitments, maintenance support or licensing of process know-how. Pricing tends to be anchored to material cost, machine time, quality burden and delivery risk. Margins can look different across the same firm: consultancy-style work funds relationships, while repeat production depends on yield, utilisation and supplier qualification lasting beyond the initial project.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually industrial organisations with their own engineering, manufacturing or regulated-product responsibilities: OEMs, tier suppliers, contract manufacturers, public-sector research bodies and venture-backed hardware companies moving from prototype to production. Decisions rarely sit with one sponsor. Operations directors, engineering leads, quality managers, procurement teams and finance controllers all tend to influence the award, particularly where tooling, validation or inventory exposure is involved. Smaller orders may start through referrals, approved-supplier lists or technical workshops; larger awards often require tendering, audit evidence, site visits and commercial negotiation. Partner channels matter where a specialist manufacturer is embedded inside a broader programme.
What they buy
Advanced manufacturing firms tend to spend on systems that reduce rework, downtime and paperwork across production. Common software categories include enterprise resource planning, manufacturing execution, product lifecycle management, quality management, document control, maintenance planning, customer relationship management, cyber security, finance, HR and analytics. Infrastructure needs are more physical than in software-heavy sectors: metrology equipment, test rigs, clean or controlled production space, workshop consumables, energy management, industrial connectivity and cloud hosting for design and production records. External services usually cluster around certification, patent and commercial legal work, grant advice, tax relief claims, export support, recruitment and technical marketing.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when a manufacturer wins a new programme, adds a production line, prepares for a quality audit, hires operations leadership, raises capital for equipment, or moves a product from prototype into repeat manufacture. The pain is usually practical: traceability gaps, scrap, late supplier deliveries, skills shortages, machine downtime, certification effort and customer audits that absorb senior engineering time. Outbound works better when it maps to a measurable operational constraint rather than a general efficiency claim. Useful angles include shortening qualification work, protecting margin on low-volume production, improving audit readiness, reducing manual reporting, or giving procurement clearer evidence before supplier reviews.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
