Agri-forestry Companies in the UK: 23,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Agriculture and forestry companies in the UK produce food, crops, livestock, timber and land-management services across rural supply chains.
Buying centres tend to sit in farm operations, estate management, timber procurement and environmental compliance rather than a central procurement function. Customers range from food processors, timber buyers and estate owners to public bodies and rural-service contractors, with many engagements shaped by seasonal production, land tenure and biosecurity requirements. Revenue quality often depends on repeat supply agreements, woodland-management contracts, grazing or cropping arrangements and downstream logistics links. At the smaller end, ownership and operational control often overlap; larger operators are more likely to run dispersed sites, employ specialist field teams and manage mixed income from production, services and environmental schemes.
Across the UK, 23,016 agriculture and forestry companies are actively trading, spanning owner-operated rural businesses, rural-service contractors and multi-site land managers. Their reported employment totals 186,399 people, giving the cohort a sizeable labour footprint even before seasonal and contractor models are considered qualitatively. The company population is not just micro-enterprise: revenue-reporting firms include a visible upper tier of operators with turnover above institutional procurement thresholds, while younger incorporations suggest continued churn in estate services, woodland work and specialist production.
Agriculture and forestry sit within a broad environmental and land-management framework, rather than a unified licensing regime. Defra sets the central UK policy frame for food, farming and rural affairs, with GOV.UK publishing official farm evidence. Forestry regulation is devolved; in England, the Forestry Commission regulates forestry and enforces tree-felling controls, alongside environmental-impact and plant-health requirements. Farming and land-management activity can also fall under environmental, animal-health and plant-health rules. Support payments and agri-environment schemes form part of the commercial context because they shape land-use choices, woodland work and investment timing.
Asset-heavy operators appear likely to remain split between owner-managed land businesses and a thinner tier of scaled groups able to absorb compliance, labour and capital costs. Capital intensity tends to slow expansion, while environmental schemes and woodland obligations have been pulling more activity into monitored service lines. Consolidation is plausible where succession, machinery costs and buyer assurance requirements favour larger operating platforms. Local knowledge, land access and seasonal labour patterns still matter, so market concentration is likely to be uneven rather than uniform.

How UK agri-forestry companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Agri-forestry operators usually earn from a blend of physical output and land-based services: crops, livestock, timber, woodland maintenance, fencing, drainage, harvesting, haulage and compliance work. Pricing is often tied to tonnes, hectares, headcount, days worked, machinery hours or a fixed seasonal contract, with higher-value work attached to assurance standards and site access. Some income also comes from stewardship-style environmental activity where land use, planting, habitat work or woodland management can be monetised. Margins tend to be shaped by weather, input costs, labour availability and the timing of harvests, thinning cycles and scheme payments.
Who they sell to
Most sell into practical buying groups rather than software-style budget holders. Food processors, merchants, timber buyers, estate owners, rural contractors, local authorities and conservation bodies tend to buy directly from operators they can inspect, visit or audit. Decision-makers are often farm directors, estate managers, forestry managers, operations managers, procurement leads or compliance leads. Smaller sales can be spot purchases, auction-based trading or short contracting jobs; larger engagements are more likely to involve framework agreements, RFPs, buyer assurance checks and evidence of insurance, traceability, biosecurity and environmental permissions.
What they buy
Most agri-forestry firms tend to buy tools and services that reduce field admin, control variable costs and evidence compliance. Relevant categories include accounting, payroll, seasonal workforce management, field-service scheduling, asset maintenance, fleet tracking, inventory, mapping, document control, safety training, insurance, legal support for tenancies and land access, and advisory work around grants or environmental schemes. Larger operators, including the 771 companies with more than £5M turnover, are more likely to have formal needs around procurement, cyber security, finance reporting, contractor management and integrations between office systems and operational teams.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers tend to appear when operating complexity moves beyond paper files and owner memory: a new estate-management contract, a crop or timber supply agreement, machinery investment, succession planning, a compliance audit, a funding event or recruitment into finance, operations or environmental roles. The 3,727 companies incorporated since 2022 may be earlier in their supplier stack, but many will still be cash-conscious and seasonally constrained. Outbound usually works better when it names a specific cost, risk or audit problem, then shows how adoption fits around fieldwork rather than office-only workflows.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
