Electronics Companies in Birmingham: 80+ Active Firms (2026)
Electronics companies design and manufacture electronic equipment, components and assemblies in Birmingham and its surrounding metropolitan area.
Engineering, operations and procurement teams tend to be the main buying centres here, especially where customers need control units, subassemblies, test capability or component manufacturing rather than catalogue distribution. The customer base is mainly business-to-business: industrial OEMs, regulated manufacturers and knowledge-intensive operators with qualification requirements, change-control processes and audit trails. Engagements are usually low-to-mid-volume production runs, engineering-change projects and quality-assured supply arrangements. Compliance and technical documentation sit close to the sale, so quality managers and product-responsible engineers often shape supplier selection alongside commercial buyers.
Birmingham has 86 actively trading electronics companies in this list, making the cohort small enough for supplier-level research rather than broad market screening. Their reported headcount is 1,175, which points to a manufacturing footprint rather than a set of nominal registrations. The local picture fits a specialist production base: facility-led firms serving industrial customers, with operational capacity, testing discipline and supply-chain traceability more relevant than consumer-brand visibility. For buyers and researchers, the useful segmentation is likely to be by application area, production depth and quality requirements, not simply by incorporation age or generic manufacturing label.
UK electronics manufacturers face product-safety, environmental and market-access rules rather than a single sector licence. GOV.UK guidance places many electrical and electronic products within hazardous-substance restrictions, requiring technical documentation, a Declaration of Conformity, required labelling and relevant conformity marking. OPSS enforces those rules, while adjacent regimes can apply where products fall within electrical equipment safety, electromagnetic compatibility or radio equipment scope. Waste obligations add another layer: organisations placing electrical and electronic equipment on the UK market must register annually as producers, either directly or through a producer compliance scheme depending on their placing-on-market profile.
Birmingham's cohort appears likely to evolve through steady specialisation rather than broad reinvention. Customer qualification, documentation burden and traceability requirements tend to favour suppliers that can sit close to engineering and operations teams, which may make switching costs higher once a component or assembly is embedded. Newer entrants are present, but scale appears selective, and many firms remain closer to specialist manufacturing than venture-style hardware growth. Consolidation, where it happens, is likely to follow supplier rationalisation, succession planning and the need to maintain compliance capacity.

Key facts
About 13% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 86 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
10% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (9 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Electrical and electronic equipment in GB and NI is covered by the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2012, with OPSS enforcing the rules.
Producer-registration duties apply annually to organisations placing electrical and electronic equipment on the UK market; those placing more than 5 tonnes must join a producer compliance scheme.
UK electronics value added rose from £4.1 billion in 2000 to £16.1 billion in 2024, a 5.8% CAGR compared with 1.6% for UK manufacturing overall.
Electronics and electrical equipment account for 10% of UK manufacturing value added and 13% of manufacturing exports, alongside trade deficits of £29 billion for electronics and £16 billion for electrical equipment.
UK electronics ranked fifth among the G7 plus China by 2022 value added, at US$18 billion, with activity skewed towards specialised, knowledge-intensive and regulated niches rather than high-volume manufacturing.

How Birmingham electronics companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Birmingham electronics firms typically earn from engineered products and associated services rather than one-off retail sales. Revenue often comes through quoted manufacturing contracts, non-recurring engineering fees, bill-of-materials pass-through, assembly margins, testing work and repeat call-off orders once a customer has qualified the part or subassembly. Pricing is usually built from labour, component cost, test time, documentation effort and warranty exposure, with margins affected by component availability and change requests. The offer is part physical product, part process capability: buyers pay for design-for-manufacture input, controlled production, inspection records and the ability to keep supplying a qualified item over its service life.
Who they sell to
Most sell to industrial and regulated customers rather than consumers: machinery makers, transport-related suppliers, medical-adjacent manufacturers, laboratory equipment producers, energy and building-technology operators, and other firms that need dependable electronic assemblies. The buying group tends to include operations directors, engineering managers, quality leads and procurement teams, with finance joining when tooling, inventory commitments or longer supply agreements are involved. Sales cycles tend to lengthen when audits, product qualification and change-control approval are needed. Routes to market are usually direct sales, approved-supplier onboarding, repeat purchase orders and formal tendering where the customer has public-sector or regulated-sector procurement rules.
What they buy
Most electronics manufacturers tend to spend on systems and services that protect production continuity and auditability. Relevant categories include manufacturing resource planning, inventory and materials management, quality management, supplier onboarding, traceability, calibration management, document control, quoting, CRM and finance software. Facilities spend can include test equipment, electrostatic-discharge controls, machine maintenance, energy management, packaging, specialist logistics and waste-compliance support. Professional services often sit close to regulation and growth: product compliance advice, health and safety, insurance, export paperwork, recruitment for engineers and technicians, and accountancy support for firms balancing project work with repeat production. Security and backup services also matter where design files and customer specifications are commercially sensitive.
Why and how to sell to them
Electronics buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when operational friction becomes visible: late components, rework, failed audits, customer complaints, engineering-change backlogs or documentation gaps before a shipment. Commercial triggers include a new programme win, a site move, a new operations or quality leader, movement from prototype work into repeat production, or customer pressure to evidence traceability and conformity. Outbound works better when it is tied to a concrete production or compliance problem, not a generic growth claim. Useful angles include reducing manual quality administration, shortening quote-to-build cycles, improving component visibility, preparing for customer audits and lowering the risk of non-conforming product reaching a customer.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
