Food & Beverage Companies in Nottingham: 185 Active Firms (2026)
Food and beverage companies in Nottingham make, prepare, distribute and sell edible products across the city and surrounding area.
Buying centres in Nottingham tend to split between production-led suppliers selling into retail and wholesale, preparation-led operators serving hospitality and events, and distributors handling storage, picking and delivery for local and regional customers. The buyer is usually a commercial manager, owner-operator or procurement team rather than a technical function. Engagements are practical and repeat-led: supply agreements, private-label production, route-based deliveries, catering volumes and direct-to-consumer fulfilment. Fit is shaped less by category fashion than by premises control, hygiene processes, traceability, labelling discipline and the ability to serve business customers beyond their own shopfront.

Nottingham has 185 actively trading food and beverage companies in this list, with reported employment of 1,848 people. The footprint is therefore tangible but mostly SME-shaped, spanning production kitchens, wholesalers, speciality retailers, drink producers and regional distributors. A small minority sit above the higher turnover threshold, while a sizeable recently incorporated tail suggests churn and new formation remain part of the local picture.
Food safety, hygiene, traceability and labelling duties sit close to day-to-day operations, rather than as a periodic compliance exercise. Food businesses must make sure products are safe to eat, avoid misleading consumers through labelling, advertising or marketing, keep traceability records, and withdraw or recall unsafe food. The Food Standards Agency is responsible for food safety and hygiene in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, working with local authorities on enforcement. Local authority registration also matters for home-based, mobile, temporary, online and distance-selling models, so very small operators are not outside the regime.
Expansion appears likely to be uneven. Operators with traceable production processes, credible labelling controls and distribution reach tend to be better placed for retail and wholesale buyers, while micro-businesses tied to a narrow local channel may remain exposed to rent, energy, wage and input-cost pressure. Acquisition activity, where it happens, is more likely to centre on capacity, routes to market and category access than on pure brand awareness. The newer tail of the cohort also suggests continued experimentation, although many firms may stay small by design.

Key facts
About 5% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (10 of 185 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.

Food businesses that sell, cook, store, handle, prepare or distribute food must register with their local authority at least 28 days before trading in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
GOV.UK food duties cover safe food, non-misleading labelling, traceability records, and withdrawal or recall of unsafe products.
The Food Standards Agency is responsible for food safety and food hygiene in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, working with local authorities to enforce food safety regulations.
UK food and drink manufacturing generated £42 billion of GVA and £152 billion of turnover in 2025.
The FDF’s 2024 trade snapshot says food export volumes were down 12.6% year-on-year, while food and drink imports were at their highest ever level.

How Nottingham Food & Beverage companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Nottingham food and beverage firms usually make money through repeat supply rather than one-off projects. Producers sell packaged goods, private-label output or prepared products into retail, wholesale, hospitality and events channels, with pricing tied to volume, ingredient specification, shelf life and delivery frequency. Distributors earn margin on storage, picking, route density and customer coverage. Preparation-led operators often blend product revenue with catering, fulfilment or service fees. Gross margin can be narrow, so buyers tend to value suppliers that protect yield, reduce waste, keep orders accurate and maintain evidence for hygiene, traceability and labelling checks.
Who they sell to
Most sell to trade buyers rather than consumers alone. Typical customers include independent retailers, hospitality groups, wholesalers, offices, event organisers, foodservice buyers and regional distributors, alongside some direct-to-consumer demand where fulfilment is manageable. The decision-maker is often an owner-manager, commercial lead, operations manager, buyer or procurement contact; finance becomes more involved where credit terms, stockholding or equipment spend are material. Sales cycles are usually practical: samples, price lists, allergen and specification checks, trial orders, then repeat purchasing. Larger retail or foodservice opportunities tend to involve approved-supplier processes and tighter documentation.
What they buy
Most Nottingham food and beverage firms tend to spend on tools and services that reduce operational leakage rather than abstract strategy work. Useful categories include stock control, order management, route planning, cold-chain monitoring, accounting, payroll, HR, quality management, allergen and labelling systems, customer relationship management, ecommerce, payments and trade-credit support. Production and distribution businesses may also buy packaging, refrigeration, warehousing, cleaning, pest control, vehicle services, recruitment and outsourced finance. Advisory demand often clusters around food safety audits, local authority registration, employment law, insurance, energy purchasing, waste reduction and contract negotiation with wholesale or hospitality customers.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers tend to be visible in operations: a new production unit, rising wholesale demand, more delivery routes, a move into retail, fresh certification requirements, senior hires, or pressure from recalls, waste, late orders and margin erosion. Sellers usually get further by linking the pitch to traceability, labour time, stock accuracy, shelf-life loss, compliance evidence or cash conversion, rather than using general growth language. Timing matters. Owner-led firms may not run formal procurement, but they will consider vendors when a manual process starts blocking repeat orders or when a larger customer asks for better documentation.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
