Mental Health Companies in Edinburgh: 27 Active Firms (2026)

Mental health companies in Edinburgh deliver clinical, digital and workplace wellbeing support across the city and surrounding metropolitan area.

Buying centres tend to sit with clinical operations, HR and wellbeing, student support, and local commissioning teams rather than with a dedicated technology buyer. The Edinburgh cohort is better read as a mixed services market: counselling and therapy providers, workplace wellbeing programmes, community support models and some digital tools serving individuals, employers, education providers and healthcare partners. Engagements are usually local or regional in scope, with recurring employer retainers, commissioned support arrangements and private-session revenue sitting alongside referral-based clinical work. The typical buyer appears to value practitioner capacity, supervision and safeguarding processes as much as software or content.

Edinburgh has 27 actively trading mental health companies in this list, a small cohort that fits the city-level nature of most provision. Together, these businesses employ a reported 275 staff, giving the market a visible service footprint even without any company crossing £5M of turnover. The age profile is not entirely mature, with 9 incorporations since 2022, which points to a continuing flow of new counselling, wellbeing and community-support operators. For researchers, the useful reading is less about a dominant revenue tier and more about a dispersed set of providers serving local commissioners, employers and private clients.

Commissioned care, employer wellbeing and digital support sit in different accountability chains. Clinical provision needs clear governance, practitioner supervision and safeguarding processes; workplace programmes are often assessed through HR, occupational-health and absence-management requirements; digital support adds privacy, triage and escalation questions. Edinburgh’s buyer mix of individuals, employers, public-sector commissioners, education providers and healthcare partners therefore creates more procurement scrutiny than a purely private counselling market. The practical market structure is likely to favour providers that can evidence referral pathways, escalation routes and staff credentials, even where delivery remains local.

A recent tail of entrants suggests the market still has room for specialist models, but larger operators remain scarce and scaling beyond local delivery appears difficult. Demand appears to come from private therapy, employer wellbeing, student support and commissioned community services. That breadth should help providers avoid dependence on too narrow a buyer group, though it also fragments sales cycles and evidence requirements. Digital support tends to extend reach, while credibility still rests on supervision, safeguarding and referral relationships. Consolidation, where it happens, is more likely to be gradual and service-led than a sudden platform race.

Key facts

33% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (9 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

Services span clinical provision, digital support and workplace wellbeing across Edinburgh and its surrounding metropolitan area.

Employer demand usually sits with HR, occupational health and wellbeing budgets, while care-provider demand is more likely to sit with commissioning or clinical teams.

The metropolitan catchment makes the list useful for mapping suppliers serving Edinburgh and nearby local authority areas.

Digital and hybrid models can widen access beyond on-site counselling, although regulated clinical delivery still depends on qualified staff and appropriate governance.

How Edinburgh mental health companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

Revenue usually comes from a blend of private-session fees, employer retainers, commissioned service contracts, training income and, for digital providers, subscription or licence fees. Delivery is practitioner-led: one-to-one therapy, group counselling, triage, wellbeing workshops, supervision, crisis signposting and content-backed support programmes. Pricing tends to follow the operating model, from per-session private billing to monthly workplace packages and negotiated service agreements with reporting obligations. Digital tools may add per-user pricing, but many Edinburgh providers still sell a managed service rather than pure software, so utilisation, clinical governance and practitioner availability shape margins.

Who they sell to

Private clients often buy directly, while organisational sales usually pass through HR, occupational health, student support, clinical operations or commissioning teams. Most employer deals are relationship-led and evidence-led, with buyers asking about safeguarding, practitioner credentials, response times, usage reporting and confidentiality. Education and public-sector routes tend to involve more formal procurement, service specifications and renewal cycles; healthcare partnerships usually depend on referral fit and governance checks. Sales cycles therefore vary: self-pay work can convert quickly, while employer, education and commissioned contracts tend to require stakeholder sign-off, service pilots, budget timing and reassurance around escalation pathways.

What they buy

Most mental health firms tend to spend on systems and services that protect practitioner time, evidence outcomes and reduce administrative leakage. Useful categories include client management software, scheduling, secure messaging, billing, payroll, HR, recruitment, clinical supervision support, outcome measurement, safeguarding workflows, document management and data protection advice. Providers with employer or commissioner contracts also need reporting, CRM, proposal support, contract management and marketing services that can explain outcomes without over-claiming. Digital and hybrid operators may buy cloud hosting, analytics, identity management, cyber security and accessibility testing, though purchasing is usually framed around privacy, safety and service continuity rather than technology for its own sake.

Why and how to sell to them

Mental health buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when referral volumes rise, waiting lists lengthen, practitioner hiring becomes harder, or a new employer, education or commissioned contract creates reporting obligations. Other triggers include a new clinical lead, service expansion, a move from private-session work into organisational contracts, or tighter scrutiny of safeguarding and data handling. Outbound messages usually land better when they refer to capacity, audit trails, confidentiality, supervision, utilisation and contract evidence rather than generic growth language. Sellers should be prepared for risk questions early, especially where a tool or service touches client information, triage, escalation or practitioner workflows.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many mental health companies are there in the Edinburgh?
Around 27 actively-trading mental health companies are registered in the Edinburgh. Of those, 0 report turnover above £5M in their most recent filed accounts.
What counts as a mental health company in this list?
A company is included when its public website and filed activity descriptions indicate it sells mental health products or services as its primary business — not just because of the SIC code it picked at incorporation. Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest mental health companies in the Edinburgh?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest mental health companies in the Edinburgh appear at the top of the table. About 0 of the 27 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do mental health companies in the Edinburgh actually do?
How does Edinburgh mental health compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of mental health populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical mental health companies in the Edinburgh?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. The median actively-trading mental health firm employs around 1 people, and median UK turnover across the list is roughly £22k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established mental health companies?
9 of the 27 actively-trading mental health companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the Edinburgh list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
