Quantity Surveying Companies in the UK: 4,400+ Active Firms (2026)
Quantity surveying companies estimate costs, manage contracts and control commercial risk across UK construction projects.
Buying centres tend to sit with development directors, commercial directors, project sponsors and public-sector estates teams rather than procurement alone. The work is usually sold as fee-based advisory and project-control support across defined schemes, with repeat appointments following asset programmes, frameworks or contractor relationships. The better-matched firms look like multidisciplinary cost consultancies: chartered surveyors, contract administrators, employer’s agents and commercial managers working for developers, main contractors, infrastructure clients and asset owners. Demand is split between early cost planning, tender and procurement advice, contract administration, and claims-aware commercial management once schemes move on site.
4,488 quantity surveying companies are actively trading in the UK, spanning small professional practices, project-specific consultancies and a narrow upper tier of multidisciplinary cost-management businesses. Reported headcount across the cohort is 12,601 staff, giving the market a visible employment footprint even though many firms remain owner-managed or project-led. Only 45 companies report turnover above £5M, while 1,093 were incorporated since 2022, so the list combines long-running professional-service firms with a sizeable recent-formation layer. Construction demand remains the main external driver, and softer new-order conditions tend to be felt first in discretionary advisory work and private development pipelines.
Quantity surveying is not a fully reserved activity in the UK, but professional title still shapes credibility, hiring and procurement thresholds. The UK Regulated Professions Register treats Chartered Quantity Surveyor as an accreditation-based profession and lists no reserved activities, with restrictions focused on use of title. RICS sits at the centre of that structure: it awards chartered surveyor status and ties member designations to qualification status, while its standards cover ethics, conduct and competence. For buyers, that makes regulation less about licence-to-operate and more about evidencing qualified people, disciplined contract practice and credible governance on high-value projects.
Fragmentation appears likely to persist, with many practices built around senior practitioner relationships and repeat project appointments rather than large national delivery platforms. The scarcer layer is the firm that can combine chartered capability, framework access, infrastructure exposure and employer’s agent capacity without becoming a general project-management house. Fee pressure tends to rise when construction pipelines soften, so consultancies with cost-control, contract-administration and dispute-aware commercial management work may be better insulated than those reliant on early-stage feasibility mandates. Consolidation has been plausible, but cultural fit and professional indemnity exposure can slow otherwise tidy roll-up logic.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (45 of 4,488 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
24% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (1,093 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

RICS awards the Chartered Surveyor title, with MRICS and FRICS designations tied to qualification status.
Annual construction output increased 0.4% in 2024, the fourth consecutive year of annual growth.
Sector revenue is estimated at £1.9 billion in 2025-26, with a five-year CAGR of -0.4%.

How UK quantity surveying companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Quantity surveying consultancies earn fee income by turning construction cost, risk and contract detail into decisions that clients can defend. Work is usually packaged around a scheme stage: feasibility cost plans, procurement and tender support, interim valuations, change control, final account negotiation and claims-facing commercial advice. Fees tend to be fixed for defined scopes, percentage-linked to project value on smaller appointments, or day-rate or time-charge for embedded commercial managers and dispute-heavy work. Some practices also secure repeat revenue through framework call-offs, retained cost-control support for asset programmes, and contractor-side commercial teams that flex with workload.
Who they sell to
Most sell to developers, main contractors, public-sector bodies, infrastructure clients and asset owners rather than a broad SMB market. The buying committee typically includes development directors, commercial directors, project sponsors, estates teams, finance leads and procurement where a framework or public tender is involved. Smaller jobs can be won through referrals and direct partner relationships, while larger programmes tend to run through bid lists, framework competitions or RFP processes. Sales cycles are often tied to planning milestones, funding approval, contractor appointment or mobilisation, so timing matters more than generic need creation. Credibility usually rests on sector experience, qualified staff and evidence of disciplined contract handling.
What they buy
Quantity surveying firms tend to spend on tools and services that protect utilisation, evidence quality and reduce rework. Common categories include practice management, time recording, project accounting, CRM, bid management, document control, contract administration workflows, estimating support, take-off software, cost databases, cyber security, HR systems and learning management for professional development. Larger consultancies may also buy cloud infrastructure, analytics, resource planning and integration support to connect finance, project and document systems. External services usually cluster around recruitment, professional indemnity advice, legal support, tax, audit, marketing and specialist bid writing, especially where a firm is chasing frameworks or moving into infrastructure work.
Why and how to sell to them
Quantity surveying buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when project volume changes, a framework is won, new senior commercial staff arrive, or fee leakage becomes visible in write-offs and unpaid variation work. Other triggers include a move into public-sector work, rising professional indemnity scrutiny, headcount growth, or a need to evidence chartered competence across dispersed teams. Outbound usually lands better when it is framed around billable time recovery, tighter audit trails, faster bid responses, cleaner handovers between cost planning and live contract administration, or lower exposure to errors in variation and final-account processes. Generic construction messaging is less persuasive than a clear link to cost consultancy workflows.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
