Social Care Companies in the UK: 22,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Social care providers deliver residential, nursing and community support for adults and children across the UK.
Buying centres tend to sit with local authority commissioning teams, hospital discharge and continuing-care routes, and families arranging self-funded support, rather than a single procurement desk. The customer mix is mostly public-sector funded or publicly assessed care, with private-pay demand more visible in older-person residential and home-care settings. Engagements range from individual placements and recurring home-care packages to block arrangements for supported living or specialist provision. Providers that fit this market usually show care premises, field-based support teams, clinical oversight where nursing is involved, and recurring fee income tied to occupancy, visits or ongoing support hours.
The UK market contains 22,142 actively trading social care providers, making it a sizeable operating base rather than a narrow specialist list. The cohort spans residential, nursing, supported living, domiciliary and specialist community models, so scale is uneven across premises-led and mobile-workforce operators. Employment is central to that footprint: providers here report 26,917 staff between them, reflecting the labour intensity of regulated care delivery and support coordination. Reported headcount also matters for interpretation, because small incorporated providers can still carry operational responsibility through shifts, rotas and care management rather than through asset ownership alone.
Regulation shapes both entry and day-to-day operations, especially where providers run care premises or deliver support in people’s homes. Residential and nursing models tend to carry more premises, staffing and clinical governance obligations; domiciliary and supported-living models place more pressure on recruitment, scheduling, safeguarding and continuity of care across dispersed teams. Market structure is also commissioning-led. Publicly assessed care tends to be bought through frameworks, spot placements or block arrangements, while private-pay work depends more on local reputation, capacity and family decision-making.
The cohort appears likely to remain split between many local operators and a smaller set of multi-site groups, rather than converging into a uniform national model. Scale-up tends to be constrained by workforce availability, inspection outcomes, fee negotiations and the practical difficulty of keeping care quality consistent across dispersed services. Newer entrants have been visible, but many are likely to stay close to particular care categories or local authority areas. Consolidation may continue where owners can combine back-office capacity, recruitment processes and care governance without losing local referral relationships.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (744 of 22,142 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
30% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (6,752 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Social care providers cover residential care, nursing provision and community support, so operating models vary by setting and service intensity.
Staffed delivery sits at the centre of the sector, which limits the scope for software-like scaling and keeps workforce planning close to demand.
Residential settings tend to carry higher fixed costs than community support models, particularly where premises and round-the-clock staffing are required.
Group structures can separate care delivery, property ownership and employment entities, so company-level comparisons need care.

How UK social care companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue is usually earned through recurring care fees rather than one-off project work. Residential and nursing operators charge weekly placement fees linked to occupancy, care category and staffing intensity; home-care and supported-living operators more often bill by visit, hour or commissioned support package. Specialist provision can command higher rates where the service requires clinical oversight, adapted premises or higher staff ratios. Margins tend to be sensitive to wage costs, agency cover, inspection outcomes and local authority fee settlements, so commercial teams usually care about utilisation, rota stability and referral flow.
Who they sell to
Buyers are split between public-sector commissioners, hospital discharge routes, care coordinators, families and private-pay service users. A typical provider will deal with framework access and tendering for commissioned work, spot purchasing when an urgent placement is needed, and direct family conversations where the person paying can choose between local options. Decision makers usually include registered managers, operations directors, finance leads, care quality leads and, in larger groups, procurement or estates teams. Sales cycles can be very short for individual placements, but framework entry, block contracts and new-service approvals tend to involve longer qualification and documentation.
What they buy
Most social care firms tend to spend on workforce, compliance and service-delivery tooling before discretionary commercial software. Relevant categories include rostering, time and attendance, payroll, HR, training records, electronic care planning, medication administration, incident reporting, safeguarding workflows and finance systems for invoicing councils, families and private payers. Premises-led providers also buy property maintenance, facilities, food, laundry, insurance and utilities, while field-based providers need mobile working, lone-worker processes, route planning and call monitoring. Recruitment, temporary staffing, legal advice and accountancy services are recurring needs because labour supply and regulated documentation sit close to revenue.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a provider opens a new branch, adds a care category, takes on another site, changes senior management, receives an inspection finding, or faces pressure from vacancies and agency spend. Sellers usually get further by linking the pitch to measurable operating problems: fewer missed visits, faster invoice reconciliation, better evidence for audits, lower rota administration, improved occupancy management or shorter time to fill shifts. Messages should recognise fee pressure and safeguarding risk; social care buyers tend to reject abstract efficiency claims unless they map to staffing, continuity of care or documentation burden.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
