Physiotherapy Companies in Manchester: 42 Active Firms (2026)
Physiotherapy companies in Manchester deliver rehabilitation, movement therapy and allied health services across the surrounding metropolitan area.
Buying centres are fragmented between self-pay private care, employer health and absence-management budgets, insurer-authorised treatment, care-provider referrals and public-sector commissioning. The most relevant providers tend to operate as small and lower mid-market clinical businesses rather than pure practitioner listings: they need enough clinicians, administrators and treatment capacity to run clinics, mobile visits, workplace programmes or specialist pathways. Engagements range from short rehabilitation episodes and sports-injury treatment through to recurring occupational-health support, multidisciplinary care partnerships and managed referral flows. That mix makes patient administration, triage, appointment utilisation and clinical governance more central than simple local directory visibility.

Manchester has 42 actively trading physiotherapy providers in this market, a compact local cohort rather than a broad national supplier base. Reported employment totals 835 people, which suggests the market is staffed enough for clinic networks, workplace contracts and multidisciplinary referral pathways, while still being dominated by owner-managed or small-group operators. Demand is likely split across private self-pay treatment, employer health schemes, insurer referrals and work with care or public-sector partners, so commercial scale depends as much on utilisation, referral flow and clinician availability as on local brand recognition.
Clinical services sit inside a tighter operating context than ordinary local services. Providers need documented consent, treatment notes, safeguarding processes, infection-control routines and clear routes for escalation where therapy uncovers wider clinical risk. Commissioned or insurer-funded work adds another layer: referral eligibility, authorisation, reporting cadence and outcome evidence often shape whether a provider can win repeat contracts. Employment-linked services also bring confidentiality boundaries between patient, clinician and employer, making information governance and role clarity part of the commercial proposition rather than just back-office hygiene.
Demand appears tied less to novelty than to access, clinician availability and evidence of outcomes. Scale-up capacity looks limited, so consolidation, where it happens, is more likely to involve clinic groups adding capacity, employer-health routes or specialist pathways than software-style expansion. Smaller providers may keep competing on access and clinician reputation, while better-capitalised operators tend to have more room to absorb referral administration, governance workload and insurer reporting. Cost pressure on labour and premises may favour providers with mixed revenue streams over single-clinic, self-pay models.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (1 of 42 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
4% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (2 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Manchester physiotherapy providers tend to serve local catchments because treatment depends on repeat appointments and proximity to patients.
Referral partners matter in this market, particularly where rehabilitation pathways require ongoing care rather than one-off treatment.
Operating models vary between clinic-style delivery, contractor-led provision and group structures.
For sales or diligence work, treatment capacity and rehabilitation focus may be more useful segmentation points than turnover alone.

How Manchester physiotherapy companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Manchester physiotherapy providers earn through a blend of appointment fees, treatment packages, insurer-authorised sessions, employer retainers and commissioned rehabilitation pathways. The product is mainly clinical capacity wrapped in administration: assessment, triage, hands-on treatment, exercise plans, progress notes and onward referral where needed. Pricing usually follows the route into care. Self-pay work is session-based, workplace and occupational-health programmes tend to use retainers or agreed day rates, and insurer or commissioner work is governed by authorisations, tariffs and reporting requirements. The commercial challenge is converting clinician time and treatment-room availability into billable utilisation without weakening clinical governance.
Who they sell to
Most providers sell to several buyer types rather than a single channel. Private patients buy on access, location, clinician reputation and recovery goals, while employers look to HR, occupational-health or operations teams for absence reduction and return-to-work support. Insurer work tends to sit with case managers and network-management teams, with approvals and outcomes evidence shaping repeat volume. Public-sector or care-provider referrals usually involve service managers, procurement teams and clinical leads. Sales cycles are shortest for self-pay patients, longer for employer and insurer relationships, and most formal when contracts require RFPs, framework access or safeguarding and governance review.
What they buy
Most physiotherapy firms tend to spend on systems and services that raise utilisation, protect patient records and reduce administration around referrals. Relevant software categories include practice management, online booking, payments, clinical notes, exercise-plan delivery, CRM, call handling, finance, payroll, HR, rota planning and outcome reporting. Larger clinic groups may also need analytics for referral sources, capacity planning and cancellation patterns. Services spend commonly covers clinical recruitment, locum cover, accountancy, employment law, insurance, safeguarding training, website work, local search, employer outreach and bid support. Facilities, treatment equipment, secure communications and basic IT support still matter because care is delivered in rooms, workplaces and patients' homes.
Why and how to sell to them
Physiotherapy buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when their admin load starts to constrain clinical time: more referral sources, longer waiting lists, missed calls, cancellation leakage, insurer reporting backlogs or new employer programmes. Leadership change, a clinic opening, a move into occupational health, or a push to win commissioner work can also create budget because the provider needs clearer governance, capacity reporting and patient communication. Outbound works better when it starts from operational friction rather than generic growth language. Useful angles include reducing non-attendance, improving referral conversion, shortening authorisation workflows, evidencing outcomes for repeat buyers, and keeping clinicians focused on care rather than paperwork.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
