Biotech Companies in the UK: 2,400+ Active Firms (2026)
Biotech companies in the UK develop life-sciences technologies, treatments and biopharmaceutical processes within the MHRA-regulated market.
Buying centres tend to sit with R&D, clinical operations, manufacturing quality, regulatory affairs and corporate development, rather than a single software-style budget owner. The commercial motion is usually business-to-business: health R&D buyers, clinical-trial sponsors and biopharmaceutical value-chain partners assessing platforms, assets, services or regulated process capability. Smaller firms may be research-led suppliers or asset developers; mid-market and enterprise-facing operators are more likely to handle formal diligence, quality documentation and staged commercial agreements. Engagements tend to be high-consideration and evidence-led, with scientific validation, safety obligations and manufacturing readiness shaping buying decisions.
The UK cohort contains 2,474 actively trading biotech companies, making it a sizeable but still specialist slice of the wider life-sciences economy. The reported employment footprint is 1,719 people, concentrated among firms with disclosed headcount rather than necessarily the whole cohort. Commercial scale is relatively scarce: 112 firms have turnover above £5M. Company formation is still active, with 588 firms incorporated since 2022, which leaves a long tail of young operators alongside a smaller set of revenue-proven businesses.
Regulatory burden falls differently across the cohort because activities range from research platforms to clinical development, manufacturing and commercialisation. The MHRA sets standards, reviews clinical trial applications, assesses marketing authorisations and oversees post-authorisation pharmacovigilance. Trials also sit under Good Clinical Practice, ethics review and informed-consent requirements, while approved medicines can face health technology assessment by NICE before routine use in the public system. Sector representation is split by buyer and business model: the BioIndustry Association covers UK life-sciences and biotech companies, while the ABPI represents research-based pharmaceutical companies. For operators, evidence quality and safety monitoring are part of the sales process, not just compliance paperwork.
Future development appears likely to remain selective rather than broad-based. The cohort has an early-commercial tail, but buyers and partners tend to reward firms that can show reproducible science, credible safety evidence and a route through clinical, manufacturing or reimbursement scrutiny. Scale-up scarcity should keep partnerships, licensing and asset transactions central to market structure. Regulatory pressure may also favour operators with documented quality systems and experienced clinical teams. For younger firms, the harder task is not only proving scientific promise, but converting that promise into repeatable commercial demand without losing time to validation, funding cycles and approval pathways.

Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (112 of 2,474 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
23% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (588 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The MHRA approves clinical trial applications, assesses marketing authorisations and monitors post-authorisation safety through pharmacovigilance.
Clinical trials must follow Good Clinical Practice, ethics review and informed-consent requirements before human studies proceed.
Approved medicines may also be reviewed by NICE before routine NHS use, adding a market-access step after regulatory approval.
The UK life-sciences industry comprised 6,170 businesses across 7,320 companies in 2023/2024, generating £146.9 billion in turnover.
UK biotech raised £3.5 billion in equity investment in 2024, a 94% increase on 2023 and below £4.5 billion in 2021, with financing concentrated in a small number of large rounds.

How UK biotech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a mix of research-service contracts, platform-access fees, licensing, staged collaboration payments, regulated process work and, for mature operators, product sales after approval. Many biotech firms are selling evidence rather than a finished package: assay performance, biological insight, clinical progress, process reliability or rights to an asset. Pricing is often milestone-based or scoped around work packages, with payment terms tied to validation, delivery, exclusivity or transfer of rights. Where firms provide services, engagement can look closer to specialist professional services or contract development. Where they own assets, the commercial model depends on partnering, licensing or acquisition appetite as much as direct end-customer demand.
Who they sell to
Most customers are biopharmaceutical groups, health R&D organisations, clinical-trial sponsors, manufacturing partners, diagnostics-adjacent operators and, in some cases, public-sector health bodies. Buying committees usually include chief scientific officers, heads of R&D, clinical operations, regulatory affairs, quality, procurement and finance; corporate development often joins when rights, licensing or acquisition options are involved. Sales cycles tend to be longer than ordinary business software procurement because buyers need scientific review, safety evidence, quality documentation and legal diligence. Direct business development is common for platforms and assets, while services, manufacturing and trial-related work may pass through approved-supplier processes, formal tenders or partner-led procurement routes.
What they buy
Biotech firms tend to spend on systems and services that help them produce, protect and explain evidence. Common categories include laboratory information management, electronic lab notebooks, clinical-trial operations tools, regulatory-document management, quality management, pharmacovigilance workflows, data storage, analytics, cybersecurity and finance systems that can handle grant, collaboration or milestone income. Outside software, they often buy intellectual-property advice, regulatory consulting, clinical operations support, specialist recruitment, accounting, investor communications, lab facilities, equipment servicing and outsourced development or manufacturing capacity. Sellers should expect validation questions, security reviews and evidence of how a product fits regulated workflows, rather than a simple productivity-led purchase conversation.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when a biotech firm moves from discovery into clinical preparation, wins a collaboration, expands regulated manufacturing activity, hires senior clinical or quality leadership, or prepares for partner diligence. Pain points tend to cluster around audit readiness, fragmented research records, slow evidence assembly, talent shortages, cash discipline and the need to satisfy external reviewers without distracting scientific teams. Outbound angles work better when framed around reducing validation friction, improving traceability, shortening handover between R&D and regulated operations, or making partner and investor diligence less labour-intensive. Generic growth claims are unlikely to land; buyers usually want proof that a supplier understands scientific, quality and approval constraints.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
