Biotech Companies in London: 700+ Active Firms (2026)
Biotech companies in London develop biological research, therapeutics and platform technologies within the UK life-sciences framework.
Buying centres in London biotech cluster around therapeutic research, diagnostics and discovery tools, plus platform technologies that support translational science. Buyers tend to be pharmaceutical groups, clinical research teams, academic-linked labs, public-sector research bodies and investors assessing IP-led businesses. Engagements range from specialist research-services work to enterprise co-development, licensing and clinical-readiness programmes, with sales cycles shaped by evidence quality, regulatory pathway and the maturity of the asset. The relevant operating profile is usually a lean scientific team with defensible intellectual property, venture or grant funding, and a route from laboratory validation towards regulated development or commercial partnerships.
London has 721 actively trading biotech companies in this list, and their reported employment footprint stands at 1,587 people. The cohort is weighted towards younger and smaller businesses: 230 were incorporated since 2022, while 33 have reported turnover above £5M. That split fits the capital-intensive nature of life sciences in the capital, where many firms remain research-led for long periods before reaching repeatable commercial revenue. For researchers and buyers, the practical distinction is between early translational companies, revenue-generating tools and diagnostics suppliers, and the smaller group already operating at a scale where procurement, compliance and partnership processes become more formal.
UK biotech and biopharmaceutical work runs through activity-specific rules rather than a single sector licence. Clinical research requires Good Clinical Practice, ethics review and informed consent, while the MHRA approves clinical trial applications, assesses marketing authorisations and oversees pharmacovigilance after approval. Market access can add a separate evidence step, with health technology assessment bodies reviewing cost effectiveness before routine public reimbursement. Sector representation sits with research-based pharmaceutical and biotech trade bodies, which matters because therapeutics, diagnostics, platform and discovery-tool businesses face different evidential burdens even when they share investors, laboratories and scientific talent.
The London pipeline appears skewed towards early-commercial and translational businesses rather than mature revenue-scale operators. Venture-financed discovery platforms and specialist therapeutics developers tend to face a longer route from laboratory validation to repeatable revenue than software or services peers, so buyer due diligence is likely to keep focusing on IP position, clinical evidence, regulatory readiness and partnership quality. Scale-up scarcity may also keep acquisition interest directed at platforms that can support multiple programmes, while diagnostics and tools businesses may move earlier towards commercial partnerships. Regulatory pressure is unlikely to ease, but it gives credible operators a clearer way to differentiate from research-only ventures.

Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (33 of 721 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
31% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (230 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The MHRA approves clinical trial applications, assesses marketing authorisations and monitors post-authorisation safety through pharmacovigilance.
Approved medicines may also be reviewed by health technology assessment bodies such as NICE before routine NHS use.
The UK life-sciences industry generated £146.9 billion in turnover in 2023/2024, with biopharmaceuticals accounting for 67% of the total.
BIA reported £3.5 billion of UK biotech equity investment in 2024, a 94% increase on the previous year and the highest annual figure since £4.5 billion in 2021.
The UK accounted for 11.5% of global medical-sciences citations in 2023, behind only the USA and China.

How London biotech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Most London biotech companies earn commercial income in uneven stages. Therapeutics developers often work towards upfront collaboration payments, milestone fees, licence income and later royalties, rather than repeatable product sales from day one. Diagnostics and discovery-tool suppliers are more likely to charge per assay, per sample, per study or through recurring access to a platform. Research-services groups sell scoped projects, validation work and specialist laboratory capacity. Many remain pre-revenue while equity funding, grants or partner funding pay for experiments, IP protection and regulatory preparation, so willingness to buy is often tied to the next scientific or financing milestone.
Who they sell to
Their buyers are usually technical and risk-aware: pharmaceutical R&D teams, translational medicine groups, diagnostic laboratories, academic-linked research teams, public-sector research bodies and investors reviewing life-sciences assets. A chief scientific officer, head of discovery or clinical operations lead typically sponsors the scientific case, while finance, procurement, legal and IP teams test cost, contracting risk and ownership. Sales cycles tend to run for months rather than weeks, especially where validation data, ethics review or clinical-readiness evidence is involved. Tools and services may move through direct scientific selling; public-sector work and larger collaborations more often involve tenders, partner processes or formal diligence.
What they buy
Most biotech firms tend to spend on laboratory consumables, wet-lab equipment, sample logistics, outsourced assay development, contract research, specialist recruitment and scientific consultancy. As programmes mature, buying shifts towards quality management, document control, regulatory affairs support, clinical operations, pharmacovigilance preparation, insurance, IP counsel and finance advice. Software demand is usually practical rather than speculative: electronic lab notebooks, laboratory information management, bioinformatics workflows, secure data rooms, cloud compute, cybersecurity, CRM for partnering pipelines, HR systems and procurement tools. Sellers should expect scrutiny on validation, audit trails, data security and whether a service fits existing laboratory and regulatory workflows.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent is easiest to spot when a funding round closes, a senior scientific or clinical hire joins, a company prepares a clinical trial application, expands laboratory space, enters a partnership process or starts hiring regulatory and quality roles. Buyers tend to evaluate vendors when cash burn, experiment throughput, documentation quality or partner reporting becomes a constraint. Outbound works better when it is tied to a specific milestone: cleaner audit trails for MHRA-facing work, faster assay turnaround, better diligence packs, lower operational drag or fewer handoffs between lab, clinical and finance teams. Generic productivity claims usually underperform against evidence-led, risk-reduction messages.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
