Pharma Companies in London: 1,500+ Active Firms (2026)
Pharma companies in London develop, manufacture, license or distribute medicines within a regulated UK life-sciences market.
Buying activity tends to sit with clinical development, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, manufacturing operations and commercial supply teams, rather than a single technology or procurement function. London operators serve a mixed customer base: UK healthcare buyers, wholesale and hospital supply chains, overseas distributors, clinical trial sponsors and out-licensing partners. Engagements are typically formal, evidence-led and slow-moving, with contracts shaped by batch release, quality systems, pharmacovigilance duties, marketing permissions or supply continuity. The cohort therefore spans specialist research groups, importers, licence holders, distributors and commercialisation teams, with scale usually expressed through regulated capability rather than headcount alone.
London contains around 1,590 actively trading pharma companies in this cohort. The employment footprint is smaller than the company count might suggest: reported headcount totals 920 people, pointing to many entities that are licence-holding, specialist research, distribution or commercial vehicles rather than large manufacturing employers. A revenue tail is visible, with 72 companies above £5M turnover, while 417 were incorporated since 2022. That mix gives the capital a broad early-commercial layer alongside a narrower group of scaled operators, consistent with a market organised around clinical development, regulated import and distribution, licensing, and commercial access.
UK human medicines sit under MHRA oversight, with activity-specific permissions rather than a single blanket route to market. GOV.UK guidance requires organisations that make, assemble or import human medicines to hold a manufacturer’s licence, demonstrate good manufacturing practice and pass site inspections. Wholesale supply to anyone other than the patient requires a wholesale distribution licence and good distribution practice compliance. Medicines also need marketing authorisation, and public healthcare access is shaped by cost-effectiveness review after approval. The ABPI remains the main trade body for research-based pharmaceutical operators, so policy debates often centre on clinical trial approval, evidence requirements, pricing access and pharmacovigilance obligations.
London’s pharma base appears likely to remain split between specialist regulated functions and a smaller group of operators with enough commercial scale to absorb compliance, evidence and market-access costs. Early-commercial businesses tend to benefit from proximity to investors, universities, hospitals and advisers, but that same concentration can mask limited manufacturing depth. Distributor and licence-holder models may face continued margin pressure as quality systems, pharmacovigilance and supply assurance requirements keep fixed costs high. Consolidation appears more plausible where adjacent operators can share licences, regulatory teams or channel access, while research-led groups may stay project-based until clinical or licensing milestones support a larger organisation.

Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (72 of 1,590 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
26% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (417 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK human medicines sit under the MHRA, which sets standards, evaluates new treatments, approves clinical trials, licenses medicines and oversees pharmacovigilance.
Manufacturing, assembling or importing human medicines requires an MHRA manufacturer’s licence, good manufacturing practice compliance and regular site inspections.
Wholesale supply to anyone other than the patient requires a wholesale distribution licence and good distribution practice compliance.
UK businesses performed £9.0 billion of pharmaceutical R&D in 2022, equivalent to 0.36% of UK GDP and 18% of all UK business R&D.
UK pharmaceutical exports were valued at £25.6 billion in 2023, with the UK ranked tenth among comparator countries for this metric.

How London pharma companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue is usually tied to regulated medicine supply rather than pure research activity. London pharma companies earn from authorised product sales, import and wholesale margins, development services, out-licensing income, milestone payments and royalties. Engagement size depends on the route to market: small specialist batches and trial supply can sit alongside multi-year distribution, commercialisation or manufacturing arrangements. Pricing tends to be per pack, per batch, per shipment, transfer price, project fee or royalty share, with extra cost attached to quality documentation, storage conditions, release checks and pharmacovigilance cover.
Who they sell to
Customers are typically healthcare providers, wholesalers, hospital supply teams, clinical trial sponsors, overseas distributors, research partners and public-sector procurement teams. Decision-making often involves regulatory affairs, quality assurance, medical, procurement, finance and supply-chain roles, rather than a single buyer. Sales cycles are usually measured in months rather than weeks because qualification, audit trails, product evidence and contractual liability matter. Routes to market tend to mix direct account management, tendering, distributor agreements, RFPs and partner-led commercialisation, with price only one part of the approval process.
What they buy
Most London pharma firms tend to spend on systems and services that protect licence status, release timelines and supply continuity. Common buying areas include quality management software, document control, regulatory information management, pharmacovigilance workflow, ERP, validated cloud hosting, cyber security, laboratory systems, cold-chain logistics, insurance and audit support. They also buy specialist legal, accounting, tax, regulatory consulting, medical writing, market-access, recruitment and training services. Hiring demand often centres on quality assurance, regulatory affairs, clinical operations, qualified-person cover, supply-chain management and commercial access roles.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying windows tend to open around licence applications, inspection preparation, new distribution agreements, clinical milestone movement, marketing authorisation work, leadership changes, funding events and hiring into quality or regulatory teams. Pain points are practical: audit readiness, document retrieval, batch traceability, case reporting, supplier qualification, stock visibility and margin pressure from fixed compliance costs. Outbound messaging usually lands better when it maps to a regulated workflow and names the operational risk reduced, such as fewer release delays, clearer evidence packs, cleaner supplier oversight or faster response during an MHRA query.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
