BPO Companies in the UK: 1,578 Active Firms (2026)
BPO companies in the UK run outsourced customer, back-office and administrative processes for corporate and public-sector clients.
Buying centres sit mainly with operations, finance, HR, customer-service and claims teams rather than a technology-only budget. Buyers are usually mid-market and enterprise organisations, including public-sector bodies, that want repeatable process delivery with service-level monitoring, workforce cover and reporting rather than ad hoc temporary labour. Engagements tend to be sizeable people-and-process commitments, often involving transition planning, workflow tools, documented controls and ongoing performance management. Closer-fit suppliers look less like general consultancies and more like delivery organisations with trained teams, standardised procedures and enough client diversity to avoid dependence on a narrow workflow.
The UK cohort contains 1,578 active trading companies, giving researchers a fairly concentrated list for a labour-heavy services category. Reported employment totals 8,526 people, which suggests the visible headcount footprint sits in a relatively small number of employers rather than across the whole long tail. Revenue scale is also uneven: 50 firms report turnover above £5M, while many others appear to be specialist operators, narrow-workflow providers or early commercial entrants. The market therefore looks fragmented in company count, with a thinner upper band of providers able to support larger corporate or public-sector contracts.
Exposure to rules usually follows the workflow being outsourced. Claims handling, finance operations, HR administration and document processing each bring different control expectations, while customer-support work adds conduct, quality monitoring and escalation requirements. Public-sector contracts tend to place greater weight on auditability, continuity of service and documented performance management, because the client is outsourcing execution rather than accountability. Market structure is shaped by the same point: providers compete on process consistency, staffing resilience, reporting cadence and the ability to take over live operations without service disruption, not just on hourly labour cost.
Further expansion appears likely to favour operators that can blend workforce management with workflow technology and clearer performance evidence. The long tail suggests plenty of niche supply, but enterprise and public-sector buyers tend to prefer providers that can absorb process risk, evidence compliance and maintain delivery during staffing pressure. Consolidation has been a plausible route for firms seeking broader coverage, especially where specialist delivery teams can be folded into a wider operating platform. Newer entrants may still find space in narrow workflows, though scale without disciplined service delivery looks difficult.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (50 of 1,578 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
26% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (418 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
BPO providers typically run customer contact, back-office and administrative processes for corporate and public-sector clients.
Buyers retain reputational and operational risk when outsourced processes fail, so service management and compliance oversight remain central to procurement.
Public-sector and multi-site contracts tend to favour providers with governance, audit and reporting processes that can operate across locations.
The market spans high-volume service providers and narrower administrative specialists, which can make supplier comparison difficult without scale and process context.

How UK BPO companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Business-process outsourcing providers earn revenue by taking responsibility for defined operational workstreams, usually under managed-service contracts rather than one-off advisory projects. Pricing may be built around staffed capacity, cases handled, transactions processed, service credits, or a fixed monthly fee with transition charges at the start. The service shape is part labour model, part operating system: trained teams, workflow documentation, quality checks, reporting packs and escalation routes. Margins depend on utilisation, staff churn, process repeatability and the provider’s ability to standardise work without losing the client-specific controls that large buyers expect.
Who they sell to
Most providers sell to mid-market, enterprise and public-sector buyers with repeatable back-office or customer-facing workloads. The commercial sponsor is often a COO, CFO, customer-operations director, HR director, head of claims or shared-services leader, with procurement, legal, information security and finance involved before award. Contract values are usually treated as operating-budget commitments, so sales cycles tend to run through discovery, process mapping, risk review, procurement challenge and transition planning. Direct sales is common for private-sector work, while public bodies and larger corporates often use formal tenders, approved supplier routes or outsourcing frameworks.
What they buy
BPO firms tend to spend on systems and services that improve utilisation, evidence service quality and reduce manual handling. Common categories include workforce management, HR and payroll, recruitment, learning systems, quality assurance, workflow automation, document processing, contact-centre software, case management, CRM, ticketing, analytics and management reporting. Security, identity management, device management, cloud hosting, backup and audit support also matter where outsourced teams handle client records or regulated workflows. Outside software, many buy employment law advice, contract support, insurance, facilities, screening, training content and specialist recruitment for operations managers, team leaders and compliance roles.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers often appear when a provider wins a larger client, takes over a new workflow, loses margin through rework, or faces pressure on service levels, attrition and transition speed. Leadership changes, tender activity, new delivery sites, acquisitions and heavier client audit demands can also create openings. Sellers tend to get further when they frame the pitch around cost-to-serve, evidence for client reporting, faster onboarding, fewer handoffs, better exception management or reduced operational risk. Generic productivity claims land less well than a workflow-specific argument that fits how outsourced teams are staffed, measured and penalised.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
