IT Services Companies in the UK: 123,356 Active Firms (2026)
IT services companies in the UK deliver managed technology support, infrastructure operations and outsourced digital expertise to business customers.
Buying centres tend to sit with technology, operations and finance teams rather than an isolated software owner. The customer base skews towards mid-market and enterprise organisations that need recurring support across sites, networks, workplace devices and cloud estates; regulated-industry and public-sector buyers add procurement and assurance layers. Typical engagements are not point solutions: they bundle service desk coverage, infrastructure operations, network management and implementation projects into contracts large enough to require delivery teams, customer support and project capability running in parallel.
The UK has 123,356 actively trading IT services companies, a broad base that ranges from local support providers to outsourced infrastructure operators serving multi-site estates. Reported headcount totals 5,261 people, giving the cohort a visible employment footprint alongside the company count. The market is therefore easier to read by contract model than by label: recurring managed service work, workplace technology support and implementation projects often sit together, while scale varies from owner-managed specialists to suppliers built around larger delivery benches.
Contracts in this market are often governed less by sector-specific licensing than by the assurance requirements of buyers. Public-sector and regulated-industry customers usually push suppliers towards documented security controls, service-level commitments, audit trails, incident response processes and clear responsibility for subcontracted delivery. Outsourcing also creates market-structure pressure: procurement teams tend to favour providers that can cover infrastructure, connectivity and end-user computing together, while specialist firms survive where they own a narrow operational niche or support a buyer with complex legacy systems.
Demand appears tied to how far clients keep outsourcing operational technology work rather than rebuilding internal support teams. The cohort’s early-commercial weight suggests plenty of small suppliers will remain local or vertical specialists, while buyers with stricter assurance needs tend to consolidate spend with providers that can evidence process maturity and delivery depth. Margin pressure has been a recurring feature where service desk work is labour-intensive, so differentiation is more likely to come from security operations, cloud migration support and sector-specific workflow knowledge than from generic helpdesk coverage.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (652 of 123,356 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
23% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (29,217 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK IT services firms sell outsourced helpdesk provision, cloud and network operations, cyber support, systems integration and maintenance to business customers.
The market tends to split between people-heavy managed service providers, consultancy-led delivery firms and smaller specialists selling retained support or project-based technical work.
Scale does not always track headcount, as resale, platform-adjacent services and partner-led delivery models can lift revenue without requiring a matching staff base.
Buyer demand is linked to organisations that prefer to buy some technology capability externally rather than run every support, infrastructure and cyber function in-house.

How UK IT Services companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
IT services providers usually earn through recurring service contracts, project fees and resale margins on hardware, connectivity or third-party software. Managed support is often priced per user, device, site or service-level tier, with extra charges for out-of-hours cover, onboarding, migrations and engineering days. Infrastructure and cloud operations may run as monthly retainers with usage pass-through, while advisory work and implementation projects are scoped separately. The commercial model is therefore a mix of labour utilisation, procurement margin and recurring support revenue, with delivery quality judged through uptime, response times, resolution speed and the ability to keep client environments documented.
Who they sell to
Most sell to IT directors, CIOs, operations leaders, finance teams and procurement functions inside mid-market, enterprise, regulated-industry and public-sector organisations. Smaller clients may buy through direct relationships and referral, but larger estates tend to use formal tenders, framework-style procurement, security questionnaires and service-level negotiation. Contract value usually follows estate complexity rather than employee count alone: multi-site support, legacy systems, user volume and compliance obligations all raise the scope. Sales cycles can be short for a helpdesk handover, but managed infrastructure, connectivity and security operations typically require discovery workshops, incumbent transition planning and board-level comfort on service risk.
What they buy
Most IT services firms tend to spend on tools that reduce ticket cost, standardise delivery and prove service quality to clients. Common categories include service desk platforms, remote monitoring, endpoint management, identity and access control, backup, security monitoring, asset discovery, documentation, quoting, billing and contract management. Larger providers also buy cloud capacity, connectivity, professional indemnity cover, cyber insurance, recruitment support and training for technical certifications. Finance, HR and project-management systems matter because the operating model depends on scheduling engineers, tracking utilisation, renewing customer contracts and matching recurring revenue to support costs.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers tend to be operational rather than fashionable. An IT services buyer may review suppliers after winning a client with stricter assurance requirements, taking on a new region, absorbing another support team, missing service-level targets, or facing a security audit. Headcount growth also exposes gaps in onboarding, knowledge management and engineer utilisation. Outbound usually lands better when it connects to margin, service evidence or risk transfer: fewer repeat tickets, faster transition from project to support, cleaner contract renewals, clearer audit trails, or a way to support more endpoints without adding the same number of engineers.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
