Business Banking Companies in the UK: 12,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Business banking companies in the UK provide deposit-taking, lending and treasury services to companies under PRA and FCA regulation.
Finance directors, treasurers and owner-managers dominate the buying centre, with procurement usually tied to cash management, working capital, credit facilities and treasury controls. The customer mix runs from SMEs needing operating accounts and overdrafts to mid-market firms arranging revolving credit, trade finance or cash-pooling support. Enterprise engagements tend to involve more governance, longer due-diligence cycles and integration with finance systems, while smaller business customers often buy on service access, fees and credit appetite. The common thread is regulated balance-sheet activity rather than a purely software or advisory relationship.

The UK cohort contains 12,872 actively trading business-banking companies. Only 82 have reported turnover above £5M, which leaves the long tail skewed towards smaller or early-commercial entities despite the regulated perimeter. A further 2,116 were incorporated since 2022, so new entrants and specialist service entities still sit alongside established deposit-taking groups. Together, firms reporting workforce information account for 447 employees, a small employment footprint for a regulated banking list and a reminder that many entries are likely permissioned entities, subsidiaries or narrow corporate-service platforms rather than full branch networks.
Deposit-taking is the boundary condition for this market, not just an adjacent service line. A UK-headquartered firm that wants to operate as a bank must pass through new bank authorisation, with the PRA assessing prudential matters and the FCA consenting on conduct. International groups using a UK branch or subsidiary also sit under both regulators. Product breadth then changes the permission set: corporate lenders, payment-service providers, e-money issuers, mortgage intermediaries, insurance distributors and investment-service providers can all fall into additional regimes. That structure favours firms able to carry governance, capital and reporting costs before sales volumes mature.
Commercial momentum appears uneven. The cohort has a broad early-commercial layer, while revenue-scale firms are comparatively scarce, so buyer scrutiny, capital requirements and compliance cost are likely to filter which entrants persist. Corporate customers tend to be conservative when moving deposits, credit facilities and treasury workflows, which slows acquisition but can make retained relationships durable. More activity may therefore sit in specialist lending, payments-adjacent services and treasury support than in new full-service banks. Consolidation and partnerships with established institutions look more plausible than a large wave of standalone banking licences.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (82 of 12,872 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (2,116 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Deposit-taking business sits within the UK banking perimeter through Part 4A permissions, with banks authorised by the PRA with FCA consent and regulated by both the PRA and FCA.
Banks may need further permissions where products include mortgages, consumer credit, payment services, e-money, insurance mediation or investment services.
Private non-financial corporations repaid £2.8 billion of finance on net in December 2024, compared with £1.8 billion of net finance raised in November.
The effective interest rate on new bank loans to UK private non-financial corporations was 6.29% in December 2024, down from 6.56% in November.
London hosts more than 170 foreign banks or branches, and the UK accounts for 14% of global cross-border lending.

How UK business banking companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Business-banking firms earn revenue from net interest margin on deposits and lending, arrangement and commitment fees, account charges, payments income, treasury fees and, for some, commissions from adjacent regulated products. Engagements are usually account-and-facility relationships rather than one-off purchases: an SME may need an operating account and overdraft, while a mid-market finance team may negotiate lending, trade finance, cash management and foreign-exchange support under an agreed credit appetite. Pricing tends to mix published tariffs for everyday banking with negotiated margins, covenants and service levels where credit or treasury exposure is material.
Who they sell to
Most providers sell to finance-led buyers: finance directors, CFOs, treasurers, owner-managers and, in larger accounts, procurement and risk teams. Contract value is often less visible than software spend because value sits in deposits, balances, lending exposure and transaction flow. Smaller businesses may onboard through direct digital channels, relationship managers or accountant referrals, while mid-market and enterprise customers typically require credit assessment, service-level review, integration checks and, for treasury mandates, formal comparison between banking panels. Sales cycles therefore range from short account opening to extended diligence where borrowing, cash pooling or regulated product permissions are involved.
What they buy
Business-banking firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce operational risk, evidence regulatory control and make relationship teams more productive. Common categories include customer due-diligence workflow, transaction monitoring, fraud controls, credit-risk tooling, treasury and payments infrastructure, finance systems, CRM, analytics, document management, cyber-security, identity and access management, cloud hosting and operational resilience support. They also buy legal, audit, regulatory consulting, recruitment and training services, particularly where new permissions, lending products or payment services create extra governance work. Sellers should expect security, auditability and implementation effort to matter as much as headline price.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial triggers tend to appear when business-banking firms add products, seek PRA or FCA permissions, expand lending activity, replace manual onboarding, or come under pressure to improve margins without weakening controls. Leadership changes, new finance or risk heads, hiring in compliance teams and partnership activity can also signal budget. Outbound angles usually work better when framed around a specific operating problem: faster customer onboarding, cleaner credit decisions, lower manual review, clearer audit trails, better treasury integration or reduced third-party risk. Generic efficiency claims are less persuasive than evidence that a vendor can pass procurement, security and regulatory scrutiny.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
