Construction Companies in London: 52,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Construction companies in London build, fit out and maintain residential, commercial and infrastructure assets across the capital.
Buying centres cluster around development, estates, facilities and capital-project teams rather than a narrow budget holder. Developers and asset owners typically buy main-contracting, refurbishment and fit-out capacity; public-sector bodies and infrastructure clients lean towards procurement frameworks; facilities operators and commercial occupiers need maintenance and responsive works. Engagements tend to be project-led, with pricing tied to scope, labour availability, subcontractor packages and site risk. The more relevant operating profile is not a micro-trader, but a contractor with enough management depth to run parallel sites, document HSE and HMRC obligations, and coordinate specialist trades across London.
London has 52,341 actively trading construction companies in this cohort, leaving researchers with a large but fragmented contractor universe. Reported headcount totals 4,898 people, although the commercial footprint also runs through subcontractor packages and site teams rather than payroll alone. The centre of gravity is likely to be contractors able to handle repeat work for developers, landlords, public bodies and occupiers. Many smaller entities remain project-specific vehicles, specialist subcontractors or local maintenance operators, while turnover-screened firms are the more relevant pool for buyers needing accountable delivery across the capital.
UK construction works through activity-specific obligations rather than a sector-wide licence. HSE’s Construction (Design and Management) Regulations place duties on clients, designers and contractors to plan work, appoint suitable people, coordinate site activity and consult workers. HMRC’s Construction Industry Scheme makes contractor and subcontractor status commercially material, because deductions from subcontractor payments have to be passed to HMRC and unregistered subcontractors face higher deductions. Construction products sit with the Office for Product Safety and Standards, which also works with the Building Safety Regulator within HSE where product compliance intersects with building safety.
London’s contractor base appears likely to keep dividing between project-specific micro-entities and operators with repeat-client, framework or maintenance books. Regulatory pressure around site safety, payment controls and product assurance tends to favour firms with admin depth, not only skilled trades. Commercial, residential and infrastructure work has been exposed to different buyer cycles, so contractors able to move between fit-out, refurbishment, maintenance and civil engineering may be less dependent on a particular client group. Consolidation appears more likely in specialist subcontracting, facilities maintenance and compliance-heavy packages than across the whole market, where local relationships and project risk keep entry barriers relatively low.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (581 of 52,341 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
27% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (14,302 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
HSE’s Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 set duties for planning work, appointing suitable people, coordinating activity and consulting workers.
HMRC’s Construction Industry Scheme requires contractors to deduct money from subcontractor payments and pass it to HMRC, with higher deductions for unregistered subcontractors.
OPSS regulates construction products in the UK and works with the Building Safety Regulator within HSE on building-safety-related issues.
ONS reported Great Britain construction new work up 1.4% in 2024 in current prices, while new orders grew by 5.6%.
Eurostat estimated that production in construction in August 2024 was down by 2.5% year on year in the euro area and down by 2.4% in the EU.

How London construction companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London construction firms usually earn through project contracts rather than recurring subscriptions. Revenue comes from main contracting, civil engineering packages, fit-out, refurbishment, maintenance and responsive works, with pricing set through fixed-price tenders, schedules of rates, cost-plus arrangements, dayworks and framework call-offs. The commercial work is part site delivery and part risk management: estimating labour and materials, buying subcontractor packages, managing programme delays, controlling variations and collecting staged payments. Margins tend to sit in procurement discipline, preliminaries, contract administration and the ability to keep parallel sites moving without safety, quality or payment failures.
Who they sell to
Most contractors sell into developers, landlords, commercial occupiers, facilities operators, housing providers, infrastructure clients and public-sector estates teams. Decision-makers typically include development directors, project managers, estates leads, facilities managers, procurement teams, quantity surveyors and external cost consultants. Smaller maintenance work can be won through direct relationships, local referrals or approved-supplier lists; larger capital works usually pass through prequalification, tender packs, framework routes or formal procurement. Contract values vary by trade, package risk and client type, while sales cycles tend to run from weeks for reactive and minor works to months for tendered refurbishment, fit-out or civil engineering projects.
What they buy
Most London contractors tend to spend on systems and services that protect margin, evidence compliance and reduce site administration. Common software categories include estimating, tender management, job costing, project accounting, document control, workforce scheduling, time capture, payroll, CRM, procurement, subcontractor management, health and safety reporting, quality assurance and fleet or plant tracking. Service spend often covers accountancy, tax support, contract law, debt recovery, insurance, bid writing, recruitment, training, marketing and outsourced finance. Infrastructure needs are more practical than abstract: mobile access for site teams, secure storage for drawings and evidence, payment workflows, vehicle support, materials purchasing and waste-management arrangements.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying appetite usually rises when contractors win repeat-client work, join a framework, expand into larger packages, appoint a new commercial or operations lead, or start missing margin because variations, retentions and subcontractor costs are hard to track. Outbound messaging tends to work better when it speaks to programme certainty, cash collection, audit trails, site safety evidence and fewer disputes, rather than general productivity claims. Contractors are often sceptical of tools that add office process without helping supervisors, quantity surveyors or finance teams. Practical proof matters: shorter month-end close, clearer subcontractor status checks, faster tender turnaround or fewer missing documents at handover.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
