Data Analytics Companies in Edinburgh: 49 Active Firms (2026)
Data analytics companies build data platforms, reporting tools and insight services for organisations across Edinburgh’s metropolitan economy.
Buying centres cluster around finance teams that need management information, operations teams replacing spreadsheet workflows, and public-sector or regulated-industry buyers commissioning decision-support and data-management work. Sales tend to be consultative rather than self-serve: discovery, integration, governance and user adoption matter as much as dashboards. Typical customers are mid-market organisations with enough digitised activity to justify external help, but not always the internal engineering capacity to maintain pipelines, reporting layers and retention controls. Engagements therefore look less like one-off visualisation projects and more like managed analytics, reporting infrastructure and advisory support tied to business processes.
Edinburgh has 49 actively trading data analytics companies in this cohort, so the local market is compact rather than broad-based. Reported employment totals 743 people, a footprint consistent with teams serving multiple client projects rather than a city dominated by large product vendors. Only 2 firms sit above £5M turnover, and 3 were incorporated since 2022, which points to a market shaped more by established consulting, integration and specialist analytics work than by a large recent formation wave.
Most providers operate outside a sector-specific licence, but the work often sits close to regulated information flows. UK GDPR and the domestic data-protection regime control how personal information is collected, analysed, stored and deleted, with the ICO as the relevant UK regulator. The practical duties cover fairness, purpose limitation, data minimisation, accuracy, retention and security, with extra safeguards for profiling, automated decision-making and special-category information. Cross-border personal-data work adds contracting and transfer assessment, commonly through International Data Transfer Agreements, Standard Contractual Clauses, Binding Corporate Rules or adequacy regulations.
Future demand appears likely to come from buyers trying to make existing operational information more usable, rather than from wholesale replacement of systems. Edinburgh providers therefore tend to benefit when they can combine engineering, governance and change-management skills, particularly for public-sector and regulated-industry customers. The scarcity of revenue-scaled firms suggests consolidation may be selective: partnerships, subcontracting and specialist advisory work may matter more than a broad wave of acquisitions. Pressure around profiling, retention and model governance should keep documentation and assurance close to the sales process.

Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (2 of 49 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (3 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 govern personal-data work, with the ICO overseeing principles covering fairness, purpose limitation, data minimisation, accuracy, retention and security.
Special-category data, automated decision-making, profiling and cross-border personal-data transfers add further safeguards for analytics providers whose work moves beyond internal reporting.
GOV.UK estimated 9,600 active, registered data-driven companies, split between 5,500 specialised data infrastructure or software-development services and 4,100 broader data consultancy or management services.
GOV.UK estimated that data-driven companies generated £343 billion in annual turnover in 2023 and contributed £84.9 billion, or 3.8%, in GVA.
The 2024 UK Business Data Survey found that 9% of businesses handling digitised data transferred data internationally, rising to 36% for large businesses and 26% for medium-sized businesses.

How Edinburgh data analytics companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Edinburgh data analytics firms usually earn revenue through a blend of project fees, retained managed-service contracts and licences or subscriptions for decision-support tooling. Many start with a diagnostic, proof of value or reporting rebuild, then move into pipeline maintenance, dashboard governance, model monitoring or analytics support for named business processes. Pricing tends to follow day-rate consultancy, fixed-scope implementation, monthly retainers or annual platform access, often with extra charges for integration, migration and training. The offer is therefore a hybrid of software, engineering and professional services, with margins shaped by how much delivery can be reused across clients.
Who they sell to
Most sell to mid-market organisations, public-sector bodies and regulated-industry teams that have enough operational information to justify specialist support, but not always enough internal capacity to own the full analytics stack. Buyers typically include CFOs, COOs, CTOs, heads of transformation, procurement teams and data-protection or information-governance leads. Sales cycles are usually consultative and measured in months rather than days, especially where personal information, procurement rules or legacy systems are involved. Direct sales is common, but public-sector work may come through frameworks, partner bids or subcontracting behind larger consultancies and systems integrators.
What they buy
Most data analytics firms tend to spend on cloud infrastructure, data integration tooling, warehouse or lakehouse environments, workflow automation, dashboarding, documentation and access-control systems. Security, identity management, backup, monitoring and audit support matter because clients often ask how information is stored, retained and accessed. Operationally, these firms also buy CRM, proposal management, project accounting, time recording, resource planning, HR, recruitment and finance systems. Services spend often clusters around legal review, UK GDPR advice, professional indemnity cover, accounting, content marketing and specialist hiring for data engineering, analytics delivery and client-facing consulting roles.
Why and how to sell to them
Data analytics buyers tend to evaluate vendors when delivery risk starts to show: too many bespoke client projects, rising support obligations, new assurance requests, harder-to-document pipelines or pressure to turn consultancy work into repeatable managed services. Hiring a head of delivery, moving into public-sector work, winning regulated-industry clients or handling more sensitive personal information can all create commercial intent. Outbound tends to land better when it speaks to utilisation, margin control, evidence for procurement, faster onboarding, security documentation and lower rework. Generic productivity claims are weaker than a clear link to client delivery, governance or retained revenue.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
