Electrical Contracting Companies in Edinburgh: 200+ Active Firms (2026)
Electrical contracting companies design, install, inspect and test building power systems across Edinburgh and its surrounding area.
Buying centres tend to sit with property managers, main contractors, facilities teams and household customers, rather than a single procurement function. Work is split between domestic rewires and testing, commercial maintenance, refurbishment packages and new-build construction subcontracts. Engagements usually range from reactive jobs and inspection cycles to project-based installation work, with evidence of both owner-managed specialists and larger regional operators. The commercial model is therefore local and relationship-led: site access, certification, response times and the ability to coordinate with other trades matter as much as the original installation brief.

Edinburgh has 212 actively trading electrical contracting companies, making this a compact local contractor market rather than a broad national software-style category. Reported employment totals 817 people, which points to a workforce footprint beyond sole-trader activity but still weighted towards small operating teams. The mix fits the shape of building services in the city: a long tail of domestic and maintenance-led firms, with a smaller set able to take on commercial refurbishment and construction packages.
Regulation is activity-led, especially where electrical work touches dwellings and building safety duties. Building Regulations Part P applies in England, with GOV.UK describing Approved Document P as statutory guidance for “electrical safety in dwellings”, including notification, design, installation, inspection, testing and information requirements. Installers can use a competent person scheme to self-certify certain building work instead of seeking separate building regulations approval, and electrical-scheme members sit on the electrical competent person register. The Building Safety Regulator also keeps building safety and standards under review in England.
Contractor demand appears tied to the ordinary churn of property maintenance, refurbishment and construction scheduling, rather than a single expansion cycle. Owner-managed specialists should continue to suit domestic and small commercial work, while larger regional operators tend to be better placed for packaged building-services contracts where testing, documentation and coordination with other trades are required. Compliance work may keep procurement relatively conservative: buyers are likely to value accreditation, response discipline and inspection records ahead of novelty. Consolidation looks possible, but selective, given the local nature of much of the work.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (6 of 212 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
30% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (64 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The UK electricians market was estimated at £35.9 billion in 2024, placing electrical contracting within a large construction-services category rather than a narrow niche.
ONS frames electrical installation under SIC 43.21/0 and publishes VAT and/or PAYE-based enterprise counts, employment and turnover for that class and related SIC 43.2 construction installation activities.
Approved Document P is statutory guidance for electrical safety in dwellings in England, covering when notification is required as well as design, installation, inspection, testing and information requirements.
Since April 2023, the Building Safety Regulator has had a duty under the Building Safety Act 2022 to keep building safety and standards under review in England.

How Edinburgh electrical contracting companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Electrical contractors in Edinburgh earn revenue from labour, materials mark-up, certification and recurring maintenance, with work packaged as call-outs, inspection cycles, fixed-price installs and subcontract packages. Domestic jobs are often quoted directly after a site visit, while commercial and construction work tends to be priced from drawings, schedules of rates or bills of quantities. Cash comes in through deposits, staged invoices and final certification, so job costing matters. The service shape is physical delivery plus paperwork: qualified labour on site, bought-in components from wholesalers, testing equipment, risk assessments, certificates and coordination with builders, landlords and facilities teams.
Who they sell to
Most sell into a mixed buyer base rather than one neat persona. Residential work usually starts with homeowners, landlords, letting agents or small builders; commercial work reaches facilities managers, property managers, estate teams, quantity surveyors and project managers inside main contractors. Routine jobs can be won through referral, local search and phone enquiry, while refurbishment, public estate and new build work tends to move through tender lists, subcontractor portals, framework call-offs or negotiated repeat work. Sales cycles are short for urgent repairs and longer where access plans, method statements, insurance documents and certification requirements have to be agreed before anyone attends site.
What they buy
Electrical contracting firms tend to spend on items that keep vans, engineers and paperwork moving. Obvious categories include electrical materials, tools, test equipment, access equipment, fleet services, fuel, workwear, insurance and health-and-safety support. On the software side, many need estimating, scheduling, job management, mobile forms, certification storage, accounting, payroll, CRM, stock control and document management, especially once work is split across domestic call-outs and commercial sites. They may also buy recruitment, apprenticeship support, trade training, bookkeeping, bid writing, website maintenance and local marketing services. Suppliers with field-service experience usually have an easier conversation than generic office-software sellers.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a contractor moves from owner-managed jobs into repeat commercial work, adds engineers, takes on a maintenance contract or starts bidding for larger packages. Pain points are practical: late materials, engineer utilisation, certification backlogs, van downtime, retentions, cash collection and the risk of losing margin after a poorly scoped quote. Outbound messages tend to land better when they reference site realities and buyer roles: faster quoting for estimators, cleaner job evidence for facilities clients, fewer missed visits for service managers, or tighter cost tracking for directors. Claims about novelty are less persuasive than proof that admin falls and chargeable work stays visible.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
