Electrical Contracting Companies in Glasgow: 400+ Active Firms (2026)
Electrical contracting companies in Glasgow design, install, inspect and maintain power, lighting and safety systems across the metropolitan area.
Buying decisions tend to sit with estates teams, construction managers, facilities managers and public-sector procurement teams, with health-and-safety documentation carrying as much weight as price. The work splits between construction packages, commercial fit-outs, industrial plant support, residential development and planned maintenance, so sales cycles vary from short small-works orders to framework-style contracts. Glasgow-area suppliers typically need qualified field teams, site supervision and project-management capacity, plus evidence that inspection, testing and certification processes are documented before they reach larger commercial or public-sector panels.
Glasgow has 498 actively trading electrical contracting companies. Reported headcount totals 2,216 among firms with employee disclosures, giving the local cohort a visible employment footprint across site-based installation, inspection and maintenance work. The market looks fragmented: a small upper-revenue layer sits above the general contractor base, while newer incorporations keep adding capacity at the lower end. For researchers, that points to a supplier landscape where turnover ranking captures procurement reach, but not necessarily depth of trade qualification, field coverage or compliance documentation.
Domestic electrical work is shaped by building-control requirements, safety documentation and certification practice. GOV.UK guidance for England, Approved Document P, covers electrical safety in dwellings and sets out when work must be notified, alongside expectations for design, inspection, testing and handover information. It is not a Glasgow rulebook, but it illustrates the market structure contractors face on cross-border or comparable domestic work: buyers look for evidence that competent people can certify work, maintain test records and carry liability through the construction chain. The Building Safety Regulator adds another reference point for building standards oversight, particularly where electrical packages sit inside wider building-safety programmes.
Fragmentation appears likely to persist, because much of the cohort is built around field teams, repeat local buyers and trade qualification rather than platform scale. Higher-revenue contractors tend to be those that can package installation with inspection, testing, certification and planned maintenance, especially for commercial, industrial, construction and public-sector clients. Newer entrants may find work in small projects and subcontract packages, but moving up the procurement ladder has been harder without documented safety processes and supervisors who can absorb contract risk. Consolidation, where it happens, is more likely to follow maintenance frameworks and compliance-heavy building-services work than simple labour supply.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (15 of 498 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
33% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (165 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
GOV.UK treats Approved Document P as statutory guidance for “electrical safety in dwellings”, covering notification, design, installation, inspection, testing and information requirements.
Installers in competent person schemes can self-certify certain building work instead of seeking separate building regulations approval, with electrical-scheme members listed on the electrical competent person register.
Since April 2023, the Building Safety Regulator has had a duty under the Building Safety Act 2022 to keep building safety and standards under review in England.
IBISWorld reports the UK Electricians market size at £35.9 billion in 2024.

How Glasgow electrical contracting companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Glasgow electrical contractors earn most revenue from labour-led installation, inspection, testing, repair and maintenance work, with materials usually passed through inside the job price. The commercial model is mixed: fixed-price project packages for fit-outs and construction work, daywork for reactive jobs, measured works for subcontract packages, and schedule-of-rates or retainer-style pricing for planned maintenance. A smaller upper-revenue layer can package design support, supervision, testing, handover documentation and ongoing compliance work, which makes the sale less like a trade booking and more like a managed building-services contract.
Who they sell to
Typical buyers include principal contractors, commercial landlords, industrial site operators, housing providers, schools, healthcare estates teams and local public-sector bodies. Commercial decisions often involve quantity surveyors, procurement managers and finance teams, while technical sign-off tends to sit with facilities managers, M&E consultants, site managers or heads of estates. Small works can be won through direct relationships and quote requests, but larger packages usually move through tender portals, framework call-offs or subcontractor pre-qualification. Price matters, although method statements, insurance, safety records and certification processes often decide whether a contractor reaches the shortlist at all.
What they buy
Most electrical contracting firms tend to spend on tools that reduce site and back-office friction: job-management software, scheduling, mobile workforce apps, quoting, invoicing, CRM, stock control, asset registers and document storage for test certificates and handover packs. Field operations also create demand for fleet management, vehicle leasing, fuel cards, plant hire, access equipment, PPE, test instruments and trade training. Professional services are relevant where firms bid for larger work, including accounting, tax, payroll, insurance advice, legal review, health-and-safety support, bid writing and recruitment. Wholesaler credit terms matter because materials outlay often lands before client payment.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent is easiest to spot when contractors win a framework place, hire supervisors, appoint an operations or finance manager, move from domestic work into commercial packages, or start bidding for public-sector and industrial maintenance. Pain points are usually practical: chasing certificates, coordinating vans and labour, handling retentions, proving competence, keeping margins intact on tendered work and replacing scarce qualified electricians. Sales messages tend to work better when tied to fewer site delays, faster handover packs, clearer audit trails, tighter cash collection or simpler subcontractor onboarding, rather than broad claims about efficiency.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
