Electronics Companies in Portsmouth: 32 Active Firms (2026)
Electronics companies in Portsmouth design and manufacture components, assemblies and devices for regulated UK and export markets.
Buying centres tend to sit in engineering, operations, quality and procurement, with finance involved once recurring production or export documentation becomes material. Demand is mainly B2B: industrial OEMs, infrastructure suppliers, regulated device makers and overseas customers needing repeatable assembly rather than hobbyist supply. Engagements are usually specification-led, moving from design support and prototype validation into small-batch manufacture, test evidence and ongoing component or module supply. The better-fit suppliers are lean engineering-led businesses with controlled production processes, not general electronics retailers or consumer repair shops.

Portsmouth is a compact electronics market, with 32 companies actively trading in the city and reported headcount totalling 491 people. The revenue profile thins at the upper end: 3 firms have turnover above £5M, leaving most of the cohort in smaller production, design-and-assembly or specialist engineering bands. No firms were incorporated since 2022, which points to a relatively mature local base rather than a visible intake of new electronics manufacturers. That age profile may matter for succession, customer concentration and the availability of production skills.
Product-safety, environmental and market-access rules shape Portsmouth electronics more than a single sector licence. GOV.UK guidance treats many electrical and electronic products as in scope for hazardous-substance restrictions, so manufacturers need technical documentation, a Declaration of Conformity, required labelling and the relevant conformity marking before placing products on the market. OPSS is the appointed enforcement body for those hazardous-substance rules. Depending on the device, electrical equipment safety, electromagnetic compatibility and radio equipment regimes may also apply. Waste obligations add another layer: organisations putting electrical and electronic equipment on the UK market must register annually as producers, with higher-volume producers joining a compliance scheme.
Retention of specialist production capability appears to be the main constraint and the main defence. Buyers in infrastructure, industrial and regulated export markets tend to favour suppliers that can evidence design control, testing discipline and conformity work, which suits established engineering-led shops. New entrants may find the certification burden hard to absorb before repeat orders arrive. Scale-up scarcity also makes the market look more like a network of qualified suppliers than a venture-backed cluster. Consolidation appears plausible where succession issues meet customers’ preference for fewer, more auditable manufacturing partners.

Key facts
About 9% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (3 of 32 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
Many types of electrical and electronic equipment in GB and NI are covered by the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2012.
In-scope products need technical documentation, a Declaration of Conformity, required labelling and the relevant conformity marking, with OPSS enforcing the rules.
Organisations putting EEE on the UK market must register annually as producers: less than 5 tonnes can register as small producers, while more than 5 tonnes must join a producer compliance scheme.
UK electronics value added grew from £4.1 billion in 2000 to £16.1 billion in 2024, a 5.8% CAGR versus 1.6% for UK manufacturing overall.
Electronics and electrical equipment together represent 10% of UK manufacturing value added and 13% of UK manufacturing exports, alongside trade deficits of £29 billion for electronics and £16 billion for electrical equipment.

How Portsmouth Electronics companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Portsmouth electronics manufacturers usually earn revenue through a mixture of design support, non-recurring engineering fees, prototype builds, assembly work, test services and repeat component or module supply. Pricing is often quote-led rather than subscription-led: bill of materials, labour, margin, tooling, certification effort and change-control work all affect the commercial model. Some engagements begin as paid feasibility or redesign projects, then move into scheduled production runs and ongoing support. Others remain one-off builds where the customer owns the specification but needs a supplier that can document, assemble, test and ship to an agreed standard.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually business buyers with their own technical, operational and compliance obligations: industrial OEMs, infrastructure suppliers, regulated device makers and export customers. The first sponsor is often an engineering, product or operations lead, with quality and procurement becoming more involved once repeat manufacture, traceability or supplier approval matters. Typical buying is not self-serve. It moves through technical scoping, sample builds, supplier questionnaires, commercial negotiation and, for larger or regulated programmes, formal procurement or RFP processes. Contract value tends to depend less on unit price alone than on auditability, production repeatability and the cost of failure.
What they buy
Most Portsmouth electronics firms tend to spend on tools and services that keep production controlled and evidence-ready. Useful categories include quality management, document control, inventory and materials planning, component sourcing, electronic design software, test automation, calibration, inspection equipment, supplier-risk monitoring and export administration. They may also need accounting, insurance, legal, health and safety, recruitment and training support, especially where lean teams have to cover engineering, production and compliance at once. Cloud hosting, cybersecurity, backup and access-control systems can be relevant where design files, customer drawings and test results need controlled handling.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when an electronics firm wins a repeat production contract, takes on a regulated customer, prepares for a quality audit, replaces ageing production equipment or has to evidence conformity for a new product line. Other triggers include leadership change, succession planning, component shortages, export growth, warranty issues or pressure from customers to shorten lead times without weakening traceability. Outbound tends to work better when it is framed around fewer production errors, clearer audit trails, lower manual administration or better control of parts and documentation. Generic efficiency claims are less persuasive than a direct link to engineering workload, compliance evidence or delivery risk.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
