Food Service Companies in the UK: 85,097 Active Firms (2026)
Food service companies in the UK prepare, sell and serve meals, snacks and drinks through restaurants, cafés, caterers and takeaway outlets.
Buying decisions sit around site operations, procurement, finance and people management rather than a single hospitality buyer. Multi-site restaurant and café groups usually buy centrally for food supply, till systems, staffing and property services, while independent outlets make more local choices and rely on owner-manager judgement. Caterers and contract food service operators skew more B2B, with tenders, service terms and recurring menus for workplaces, events and public-sector settings. The practical engagement is operational: kitchens, service staff, suppliers, premises and local footfall all have to line up before revenue appears.
85,097 food service companies are actively trading in the UK, a count that reflects a long tail of local sites as well as multi-site groups. Reported employment stands at 21,315 staff, keeping workforce planning near the centre of the market alongside rent, utilities and food costs. Scale is uneven: 714 report turnover above £5M, while 32,892 have been incorporated since 2022. The resulting cohort has many early commercial operators, with a thinner layer of groups able to centralise finance, HR, procurement and property decisions.
Operating risk is concentrated in local permissioning and day-to-day compliance: food hygiene inspections, allergen controls, alcohol licensing where drinks are served, waste handling, and employment rules for shift-based staff. The same site can face separate constraints from landlords, delivery platforms, insurers and local authorities before a menu or opening-hours change reaches customers. That structure tends to favour operators that can standardise recipes, supplier lists and labour scheduling across sites, while independents retain more discretion over format and local demand.
Margins appear likely to remain the main filter between new openings and durable operators. Food service tends to punish weak unit economics quickly, because rent, labour, ingredients and utilities move through the profit and loss continuously. Larger groups can centralise procurement and menu design, but they also carry exposure to wage costs and consumer footfall. Smaller specialists may keep trading where they have clear local demand, although succession, lease terms and delivery-platform dependency make consolidation plausible rather than assured.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (714 of 85,097 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
38% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (32,892 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Food service firms prepare, sell and serve meals, snacks and drinks through restaurants, cafés, caterers and takeaway outlets.
Consumer-facing venues and contract-led operators serving workplaces, events and institutional buyers sit under the same food service label.
Route to revenue tends to split between venue-led trading, managed catering, takeaway operations and group structures behind multiple outlets.

How UK Food Service companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Food service operators earn revenue through per-cover sales, takeaway orders, delivery orders, catering contracts and venue concessions, so income is tied to footfall, utilisation and repeat custom rather than software-style retention. Restaurants and cafés price by menu item, with margin managed through portioning, wastage and labour scheduling. Contract caterers more often work on fixed-fee, cost-plus or per-head arrangements, with service levels, menus and staffing written into the agreement. Engagements range from high-frequency counter transactions to contracted provision across workplaces, events or institutions. The product is physical food plus time-sensitive service: kitchens, equipment, stock, compliance and front-of-house execution determine whether a sale is profitable.
Who they sell to
Most restaurants, cafés and takeaways sell directly to consumers, with purchase decisions shaped by location, occasion, price point and reviews. Caterers and contract operators sell into employers, venues, education, care and public-sector settings, where buyers are usually procurement, facilities, operations or finance teams. Contract value ranges from low-ticket consumer orders to recurring catering agreements tied to staffing, service levels and menu scope. Sales cycles split sharply: an independent site can win a customer on the day, while B2B catering work often passes through tendering, tasting sessions, site visits, insurance checks and negotiation. Vendors selling into the sector usually find owner-managers in smaller outlets and operations, finance or procurement leads in larger groups.
What they buy
Most food service firms tend to spend on ingredients, packaging, utilities, waste collection, cleaning, maintenance and small equipment before discretionary technology. Software budgets usually sit around electronic point-of-sale, payments, table booking, delivery-order management, stock control, recipe costing, allergen records, rota planning, payroll, HR and accounting. Larger groups add business intelligence, central purchasing, supplier onboarding, learning management, cyber security and property management. Services-led spend includes recruitment, temporary staffing, bookkeeping, employment law, licensing advice, local marketing, menu photography and insurance broking. Sellers usually need to show how a purchase reduces waste, saves manager time or protects gross margin at site level.
Why and how to sell to them
Food service buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a new site is opening, a lease or energy contract is being renegotiated, labour scheduling has become unreliable, or management is trying to centralise suppliers across a group. Other triggers include a poor hygiene rating, allergen-control changes, new finance leadership, rising delivery commission costs, persistent stock variance or difficulty recruiting shift managers. Outbound works better when it starts with unit economics: fewer wasted ingredients, faster cash reconciliation, lower agency staffing, cleaner compliance records or more predictable repeat visits. Implementation risk matters, so pitches should explain set-up effort, staff training and how trading hours are protected.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
