Food And Drink Companies in the UK: 17,765 Active Firms (2026)
Food and drink companies in the UK manufacture, prepare, distribute and sell edible products under safety, hygiene, traceability and labelling duties.
Buying centres tend to sit in procurement, category management, technical compliance and operations, rather than a single software-style economic buyer. The seller base ranges from own-label manufacturers and contract packers to wholesale distributors, foodservice suppliers, importers, online merchants and specialist producers. Customer routes are mixed: consumer brands need retail listings and online fulfilment, while B2B operators work through multi-site supply agreements, recurring wholesale accounts and audited supplier relationships. Typical engagements involve repeat orders, service-level commitments, labelling checks and traceability evidence, so commercial scale is tied as much to operational discipline as to sales reach.
The UK cohort contains 17,765 actively trading food and drink companies, making it a sizeable employer-facing market as well as a consumer supply chain. Reported headcount totals 11,768 people, which points to operating businesses with staff, premises, logistics or production routines behind the corporate registrations. Revenue scale is uneven: 937 firms are above £5M turnover, while 4,398 have been incorporated since 2022. That mix gives the list both mature suppliers able to serve national retail, wholesale or foodservice accounts and a long tail of newer operators working through kitchens, warehouses, import channels and online sales.
Food and drink operators sit under duties that attach to the activity, not just the product category. gov.uk frames the basics around safe food, non-misleading labelling, advertising and marketing, traceability records, and withdrawal or recall of unsafe products. The Food Standards Agency covers food safety and hygiene in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, working with local authorities on enforcement; Scotland has separate food standards arrangements. Businesses selling, cooking, storing, handling, preparing or distributing food need local authority registration before trading, including home-based, mobile, temporary, online and distance-selling operations. The practical effect is a market where traceability evidence and supplier assurance often sit close to sales contracts.
Scale and compliance appear likely to pull the cohort in different directions. Larger operators tend to be drawn toward national account management, export readiness and tighter assurance processes, while newer producers often start with direct-to-consumer, local wholesale or foodservice channels before taking on formal retail supply. Margin pressure and retailer scrutiny may favour businesses that can document origin, handling, storage and recall procedures without slowing fulfilment. Consolidation also looks plausible where distribution reach, warehouse capacity or production capacity can be shared, but the fragmented base suggests many independent specialists will remain outside acquisition paths.

Key facts
About 5% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (937 of 17,765 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
24% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (4,398 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Food businesses that sell, cook, store, handle, prepare or distribute food must register with their local authority at least 28 days before trading in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
GOV.UK says food businesses must make sure food is safe to eat, avoid misleading consumers through labelling, keep traceability records, and withdraw or recall unsafe food.
The Food and Drink Federation describes food and drink as the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, with £152 billion of turnover and £42 billion of GVA in 2025.
Food export volumes were down 12.6% year-on-year in 2024, while food and drink imports reached their highest recorded level.
FoodDrinkEurope puts EU food and drink industry turnover at €1.2 trillion, with 4.7 million people employed and €182 billion of exports outside the EU.

How UK Food And Drink companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Food and drink companies earn revenue by producing, packing, importing, distributing or retailing physical products with repeat purchasing patterns. Pricing is usually tied to cases, pallets, weight, volume, list prices less rebates, or negotiated supply terms, rather than software-style licences. Contract manufacturers and packers may charge on production runs, setup work and ingredients, while distributors make margin on stock movement, availability and delivery. Consumer-facing operators depend on retail sell-through, online orders or foodservice demand; B2B suppliers depend on account retention, range extensions and the ability to meet agreed service levels without quality or availability failures.
Who they sell to
Most food and drink firms sell into a mix of grocery retail, convenience, wholesale, hospitality, catering, manufacturing and direct consumer channels. Buyer roles tend to include category managers, procurement leads, technical managers, operations directors, chefs, founders and finance teams, depending on the route to market. Smaller wholesale and foodservice relationships can move from sampling to repeat ordering within weeks, while grocery, public-sector and multi-site hospitality contracts usually take longer because audits, insurance, labelling, allergen controls and supply continuity all need checking. Procurement may be direct, broker-led, distributor-led or run through formal tenders where scale and assurance matter.
What they buy
Most food and drink firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce waste, protect margin and keep orders moving. Common software categories include inventory management, production planning, warehouse management, quality management, traceability, labelling, finance, CRM, ecommerce, analytics and customer service tooling. They also buy cold-chain logistics, packaging, ingredients, testing, certification support, insurance, food safety advice, recruitment, maintenance, energy management and marketing services. Larger manufacturers and distributors often need integration between stock, orders, finance and transport, while smaller producers may prioritise bookkeeping, online sales, basic compliance documentation and outsourced fulfilment before investing in heavier operational systems.
Why and how to sell to them
Food and drink buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when margin pressure, new listings, site moves, export plans, recalls, audit findings or headcount growth expose gaps in operating routines. New product launches and shifts from local sales into wholesale or retail can also trigger spending on labelling, traceability, demand planning and customer account management. Outbound messaging usually lands better when it speaks to waste, availability, shelf-life, audit readiness, fulfilment accuracy or cash tied up in stock, rather than generic growth claims. Evidence matters: food buyers often want practical proof that a vendor can fit around production schedules, compliance checks and time-sensitive distribution.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
