Food And Drink Companies in Liverpool: 212 Active Firms (2026)
Food and drink companies in Liverpool manufacture, prepare, distribute or sell consumable products across the city-region supply chain.
Buying centres usually sit in procurement, operations, category management and compliance, rather than a dedicated food buyer role. Liverpool operators in this cohort tend to sell into retail, hospitality, wholesale, online and business-to-business channels, with engagements ranging from repeat local supply to contracted distribution, catering or private-label arrangements. The more attractive commercial accounts are established SMEs and mid-market producers or distributors with physical premises, documented hygiene processes and traceability controls. Sales cycles tend to be operational: buyers want reliability, shelf-life discipline and clear recall procedures before volume.
Liverpool has 212 actively trading food and drink companies in this list, giving the city a compact but varied operating base across preparation, distribution, retail and wholesale. Reported headcount totals 1,346, so the employment footprint is visible for a local cohort that still contains many owner-managed or site-based businesses. Only 12 companies report turnover above £5M, while 58 have been incorporated since 2022. That mix points to a market with a long tail of smaller operators and a narrower band of revenue-ranked larger businesses.
Food safety, hygiene, traceability and labelling duties shape the operating model rather than sitting as a back-office formality. Businesses dealing in food must make sure products are safe to eat, avoid misleading consumers through labelling, advertising or marketing, keep traceability records, and withdraw or recall unsafe products when required. The Food Standards Agency oversees food safety and hygiene in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, working with local authorities on enforcement. Liverpool businesses that sell, cook, store, handle, prepare or distribute food need local authority registration before trading, including home-based, mobile, temporary, online and distance-selling models.
Growth appears more likely to come through channel mix, operational discipline and selective contract wins than through a wave of very large new local manufacturers. The cohort tends to favour practical, site-based businesses, so working capital, energy costs, labour availability and food safety compliance are likely to shape expansion decisions. Buyers may keep pushing for clearer traceability and steadier fulfilment, particularly where products move through hospitality, retail and wholesale routes. Consolidation has been a recurring pattern in food supply chains, but smaller Liverpool operators can remain relevant where local sourcing, speed and service matter.

Key facts
About 5% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 212 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
27% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (58 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Food businesses that sell, cook, store, handle, prepare or distribute food must register with their local authority at least 28 days before trading in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
GOV.UK requires food operators to keep food safe, avoid misleading labelling, advertising or marketing, maintain traceability records, and withdraw or recall unsafe food.
The Food and Drink Federation puts UK food and drink manufacturing at £152 billion of turnover, £42 billion of GVA and £25.6 billion of exports in 2025.
The FDF’s 2024 trade snapshot says food export volumes were down 12.6% year-on-year, while food and drink imports were at their highest ever level.
FoodDrinkEurope says the EU food and drink industry employs 4.7 million people, generates €1.2 trillion of turnover and €250 billion in value added.

How Liverpool Food And Drink companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Liverpool food and drink companies usually make money from product sales rather than software-style subscriptions: cases, pallets, prepared meals, ingredients, drinks, catering orders, fulfilment fees and distribution mark-ups. Pricing tends to be unit, weight, volume or contract-rate based, with margins shaped by shelf life, wastage, packaging, labour and chilled or ambient storage. Some operators add services around preparation, packing, storage, delivery or private-label production, so revenue can blend manufactured goods with logistics and operational work. Smaller accounts may buy on repeat purchase orders, while larger trade relationships tend to require specifications, samples, credit terms and evidence that batches can be traced and recalled.
Who they sell to
Typical buyers sit across independent retailers, hospitality groups, wholesalers, online sellers and business customers that need regular stock or prepared food. The first conversation may be with an owner-manager, chef, buyer or operations lead, but larger accounts usually involve procurement, finance and compliance before terms are agreed. Lower-value orders can move through direct sales, referrals, local networks or self-serve online ordering; higher-value supply and distribution agreements tend to run through sampling, site checks, specifications, price negotiation and payment-term review. Most sales cycles are practical rather than theatrical: buyers want confidence that deliveries arrive, labels are right and substitutions will not create avoidable risk.
What they buy
Most Liverpool food and drink firms tend to spend on systems and services that make stock, margin and compliance easier to manage. Relevant pitches often sit around accounting, inventory control, warehouse management, route planning, food traceability, labelling checks, quality management, payments, e-commerce, CRM and customer service. Site-based operators also buy refrigeration support, packaging, cleaning, pest control, insurance, energy advice, health and safety services, legal support, bookkeeping, recruitment and temporary labour. Where a business handles chilled goods or short shelf-life products, waste reduction, demand forecasting and delivery scheduling are often more persuasive than generic productivity claims.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often shows up when a firm wins a new wholesale account, moves premises, adds delivery capacity, changes packaging, starts selling online or prepares for a local authority inspection. Other triggers include a recall scare, margin squeeze, staff churn, late deliveries or manual stock records that no longer match order volume. Sellers usually get further by tying the pitch to loss prevention, traceability, fewer failed deliveries, steadier cash collection or easier audit preparation. A Liverpool operator with vans, cold storage, production staff and trade customers will generally care less about abstract growth claims than about keeping products safe, orders accurate and margins visible.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
