Grocery Companies in the UK: 16,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Grocery retailers sell food, household staples and daily essentials through stores and online channels across the UK.
Buying centres tend to sit in operations rather than consumer marketing: central purchasing, category management, stock control and finance teams shape most decisions. The relevant customer base is consumer-facing, but the operating model is business-to-business behind the scenes, with suppliers, wholesalers, logistics providers and store managers tied into the same replenishment cycle. Suitable retailers are usually beyond single-shop convenience trading, with regional or national store networks and chilled plus ambient supply chains. Engagements are therefore practical and margin-sensitive, covering ranging, price changes, supplier terms, compliance reporting and the integration of store and online ordering rather than one-off retail projects.
Across the UK, 16,884 grocery retailers and supermarket operators are actively trading. The revenue-visible upper tier is narrow: 133 operators sit above £5M turnover, while 5,468 have been incorporated since 2022, pointing to a long tail of recent entrants and small operators. Known headcount across the employment-reporting cohort totals 4,520 people, which should be read as a reported footprint rather than a full labour-market estimate. The shape is therefore split between many small local retailers and a smaller set of multi-site operators with central buying, logistics and stock-control functions.
Sector-specific oversight matters because the buying relationship is asymmetric: large grocery retailers can impose costs or timing pressure on food and household-goods suppliers. The Groceries Supply Code of Practice, overseen through the CMA framework and the Groceries Code Adjudicator, focuses on written supply agreements, unilateral changes, dispute handling and cost-price negotiations. Compliance work is not just legal housekeeping; it affects how buying teams document promotions, delists, forecasting changes and supplier charges. For multi-site operators, the commercial function therefore sits close to competition-law risk, especially where central terms are applied across store and online channels.
Further development appears likely to favour operators that can keep range, price and availability decisions close to real demand while still meeting supplier-code expectations. Scale-up scarcity matters: many grocery retailers remain local or regional, and the step from store-led trading to centralised category management tends to be operationally difficult. Online ordering is now part of the channel mix rather than a separate growth story, so logistics discipline and margin control may matter more than channel expansion alone. Consolidation is likely to remain selective, with better-capitalised groups acquiring sites, supply relationships or local banners where integration costs look manageable.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (133 of 16,884 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
32% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5,468 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The Groceries (Supply Chain Practices) Market Investigation Order 2009 requires designated grocery retailers to follow the Groceries Supply Code of Practice.
Designated retailers must use written supply agreements, maintain a disputes mechanism and submit compliance reports to the CMA and Groceries Code Adjudicator.
UK grocery market value is forecast to rise from £216.8 billion in 2022 to £241.3 billion in 2027, an 11.3% increase.
Food-store sales volumes fell in 2024, although by less than in 2022 and 2023.
Take-home grocery sales reached £11.6 billion over the four weeks to 3 November 2024, up 2.3%, with grocery price inflation also at 2.3%.

How UK grocery companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Grocery retailers earn most revenue from the resale of food, household staples and daily essentials to consumers, with profit shaped by gross margin, supplier terms, waste and store operating costs. The commercial unit is usually the basket, the category or the store estate rather than a one-off project. Supplier income can include promotional funding, rebates, delivery charges and agreed listing or ranging activity, while online ordering adds fulfilment and substitution economics. Pricing decisions tend to be frequent, operational and margin-sensitive, especially where chilled and ambient supply chains meet local demand.
Who they sell to
Most sell to households through stores and online channels, so end-customer pricing is low-ticket and repeat-led. Their own buying relationships are more formal: food manufacturers, wholesalers, logistics partners and service providers normally deal with central purchasing, category management, finance, operations and procurement. Larger operators often test new suppliers by region, category or fulfilment workflow before rolling out across an estate. Technology, logistics and compliance-related purchases may pass through tender or procurement review, while smaller regional chains are more likely to rely on direct sales, board-level approval and operational pilots.
What they buy
Most grocery operators tend to spend on systems and services that protect margin, availability and compliance. Relevant pitches often sit around stock forecasting, replenishment, pricing and promotion management, supplier contract management, finance reconciliation, workforce scheduling, payroll, payments, cyber security, business intelligence and store-to-online order management. Physical and operational spend is also material: chilled logistics, warehouse processes, cold-chain monitoring, energy management, facilities maintenance, packaging, merchandising support and food-safety advice. Recruitment and training can matter where store teams, drivers, warehouse staff and category specialists are hard to hire or retain.
Why and how to sell to them
Margin pressure, food waste, product availability and supplier-code compliance are usually better hooks than generic growth language. Grocery buyers tend to evaluate vendors when they add stores, centralise category management, change finance or operations leadership, renegotiate supplier terms, expand online ordering or integrate acquired sites. Outbound is usually clearer when it links to a live operating metric: fewer stock-outs, cleaner promotion funding records, faster price changes, lower wastage, easier compliance reporting or less manual reconciliation between stores, depots and finance. Claims need evidence, because buyers are used to testing small before committing estate-wide.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
