Growth Equity Companies in the UK: 300+ Active Firms (2026)
Growth equity firms provide expansion capital to established scaleups and profitable private businesses across the UK.
Buying activity centres on founder-led scaleups, profitable mid-market companies and private businesses that already have recurring or repeatable revenue rather than concept-stage risk. Engagements tend to be diligence-heavy and relationship-led, with investment teams assessing revenue quality, unit economics, management depth and the route from founder-led sales to repeatable go-to-market. Portfolio support usually matters as much as capital allocation: hiring senior operators, preparing governance packs, refining pricing, and building the reporting cadence expected before a later exit or institutional funding round. For buyers and partners, the relevant contact is usually the investment team, with finance and operating partners involved once a mandate is live.

The UK market is fairly small in headcount terms, with 364 actively trading growth equity firms and reported employment of 1,264 people. That points to an investment-management base built around compact teams rather than large operating workforces: origination, diligence, portfolio support and investor relations can sit inside the same partnership structure. The cohort also includes 42 companies with turnover above £5M, so the revenue distribution appears uneven, with a minority of firms sitting above the most visible commercial threshold. Recent formation is not absent, but the market still looks relationship-led, where track record and access to growth-stage deal flow matter more than broad physical scale.
Private-company investment is shaped less by a single sector rulebook than by the activities each manager undertakes. Firms raising external capital, advising on investments, arranging deals or managing regulated vehicles may fall within the FCA perimeter, while direct investment from a balance sheet can sit outside parts of that regime. Marketing to investors, valuation processes, conflicts management and client-money controls remain recurring compliance questions. Market practice is also influenced by BVCA guidance, UK GAAP reporting conventions and HMRC treatment of investment structures. The practical result is a sector where legal form, fund structure and investor type often matter as much as the target company’s growth profile.
Future development appears likely to favour managers that can show repeatable sourcing and operational support rather than capital alone. The cohort’s compact staffing profile suggests many firms will keep specialist focus, whether by sector, deal stage or founder transition, instead of adding broad internal teams. Fundraising pressure may also push managers toward co-investment, continuation structures and closer reporting to limited partners. Consolidation is plausible where smaller partnerships struggle to raise fresh pools of capital, but the category tends to remain fragmented because personal networks and domain credibility still carry weight in originating growth-stage deals.

About 11% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (42 of 364 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
11% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (41 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Growth equity sits between earlier-stage venture funding and control-oriented buyout activity.
The segment targets established scaleups and profitable private businesses rather than pre-revenue startups.
Expansion capital is commonly used for hiring, product development, acquisitions or international sales.

How UK growth equity companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Growth equity managers make money by raising pools of capital from institutions, family offices and other investors, then deploying that capital into private companies with proven revenue traction. Their economic model usually combines ongoing management fees with carried interest if investments exit above an agreed return threshold; some also earn monitoring, transaction or co-investment fees depending on structure. The product is not software or advice in isolation, but capital plus judgement: origination, due diligence, negotiation, governance and portfolio support. Day-to-day work is document-heavy, with investment papers, financial models, legal diligence, valuation reviews and board reporting sitting around a small number of live deals.
Who they sell to
Growth equity firms sell in two directions. On one side, they market funds or mandates to pension schemes, endowments, insurers, family offices and wealth managers, where CIOs, investment committees and external consultants tend to control allocation. On the other, they sell capital to founders, chief executives, CFOs and chairs who want expansion funding without treating the business as early venture risk. Most mandates are relationship-led rather than self-serve: introductions come through corporate finance advisers, lawyers, accountants, banks, sector networks and prior portfolio contacts. Institutional capital raising can involve formal questionnaires and consultant screening, while company-side origination is usually a long direct-sales process built on trust, timing and perceived fit.
What they buy
Most growth equity firms tend to spend on tools and services that improve sourcing, diligence, investor reporting and portfolio oversight. Common software needs include CRM for deal flow, secure document management, fund accounting, portfolio monitoring, valuation workflows, analytics, compliance tracking and cyber security. Service budgets often go to legal counsel, tax advisers, financial due diligence, commercial diligence, market mapping, executive search, interim finance support and marketing help for fundraising. Operating partners may also buy services on behalf of portfolio companies, especially recruitment, pricing work, revenue operations, procurement support and finance-system upgrades. Sellers should expect a small buying group and a preference for evidence over broad platform claims.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a manager is raising a new fund, adding operating partners, taking on more portfolio companies, preparing an exit, changing fund administrators or tightening FCA-facing processes. Pain points are usually practical: too much partner time spent on manual reporting, inconsistent portfolio metrics, slow diligence on competitive processes, weak visibility of proprietary deal flow, or pressure from investors for clearer valuation and performance evidence. Outbound tends to work better when it names a workflow problem rather than claiming to help with growth. Useful angles include faster investment-committee preparation, cleaner LP reporting, audit-ready documentation, better founder coverage and support for portfolio hiring or revenue operations.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
