Growth Equity Companies in London: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Growth equity companies provide expansion capital to established high-growth businesses from a London investment base.
Buying centres sit with investment committees, portfolio-operating teams and finance leaders rather than software buyers or procurement desks. The London growth equity model tends to serve revenue-generating private companies that have moved beyond seed-style risk but are not obvious buyout candidates. Engagements are usually bespoke: minority investment, commercial due diligence, board-level reporting, and follow-on support around hiring, pricing, international sales or acquisitions. Sellers are often specialist investment teams with sector theses, while buyers of their capital are founders, management teams and existing shareholders looking for scale-up funding without handing over full control.

London has 173 actively trading growth equity companies, giving a focused view of managers and investment businesses rather than a broad private-capital universe. Reported employment is lean: the cohort has 603 staff in aggregate, consistent with specialist deal teams, finance staff and portfolio-support roles rather than operating-company workforces. The mix also includes managers above the lower mid-market threshold and a newer tail of businesses formed since the current fundraising cycle tightened, so headcount should be read as an indicator of operating capacity, not portfolio reach.
Private-market investing sits inside a rule-heavy perimeter even when the underlying portfolio companies are not themselves regulated. Managers need clear boundaries between marketing to investors, advising on transactions, handling conflicts and presenting valuations. Fund documentation, side letters, investor suitability checks and investor reporting create much of the compliance workload. The market structure is also relationship-led: access to later-stage private companies often comes through advisers, existing shareholders and sector specialists, so diligence quality and reputation matter as much as ticket size. London’s institutional density helps origination, but it also makes differentiation harder for newer managers.
London’s growth equity cohort appears likely to remain selective rather than broad-based. A sizeable part of the market still looks like specialist investment partnerships, with only a smaller set carrying the staff base associated with platform functions and portfolio operations. That tends to favour managers with repeatable origination and sector focus, particularly where later-stage private companies need capital but are cautious about valuation resets. Consolidation is possible, but the more likely near-term pattern is quieter: fewer generalist propositions, more emphasis on portfolio support, and longer scrutiny before new commitments are made.

Key facts
About 11% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (20 of 173 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
14% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (25 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Growth equity usually sits after early venture funding and before a buyout route becomes the main option.
London is the investment base for this list, rather than a claim about where portfolio companies operate.
Mandate, fund structure and portfolio fit often separate otherwise similar investment firms in this segment.

How London growth equity companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Growth equity firms earn revenue from fund management, advisory and performance-linked economics rather than from a conventional product sale. Investor-side pricing usually combines recurring management fees with carried interest if investments return capital above agreed hurdles. Portfolio-company engagement is deal-led: minority funding, diligence, transaction structuring, board participation and follow-on support. The service being sold is capital plus judgement, access and governance. Costs are front-loaded around origination and diligence, while upside depends on later exits, refinancings or secondary sales, so their commercial model is less predictable than a subscription software business.
Who they sell to
Their external market has two sides. On the capital-supply side, most growth equity managers sell fund access to institutional investors, family offices and other private-capital allocators, where investment committees, CIOs, CFOs and legal teams shape approval. On the investee side, they court founders, management teams, chairs and existing shareholders of revenue-generating private companies. Sales cycles are typically relationship-led and multi-month, with adviser introductions, direct outreach and sector networking doing more work than formal procurement. RFP-style processes appear more often in investor mandates than in company-side deal origination.
What they buy
Most London growth equity firms tend to spend on tools and services that improve origination, diligence, compliance and investor servicing. Common categories include CRM, private-market research, workflow management, secure document exchange, fund accounting, portfolio monitoring, valuation support, analytics, cyber security, HR and finance systems. Specialist services matter as much as software: legal advice, tax structuring, audit, commercial due diligence, market mapping, executive search and communications support all sit close to deal activity. Larger managers may also buy pricing, sales effectiveness and hiring support that can be reused across portfolio companies.
Why and how to sell to them
Growth equity buyers tend to evaluate vendors when fundraising pressure rises, a new fund is being launched, portfolio reporting becomes more demanding, or a team moves from partner-led working to a more formal operating model. Leadership hires in finance, operations, investor relations or compliance are useful intent signals, as are new platform roles and a run of new investments. Outbound usually works better when it speaks to specific frictions: faster diligence, fewer manual reporting cycles, cleaner audit trails, better portfolio visibility, or lower operational risk. Generic scale-up language tends to land poorly with investment teams that assess claims for a living.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
