Private Equity Companies in London: 7,800+ Active Firms (2026)
Private equity firms in London invest institutional capital into private companies, from growth-stage businesses to buyouts.
Buying centres tend to sit with investment committees, partner groups, portfolio operations teams and institutional allocator relationships, rather than a single procurement function. London managers in this category serve pension capital, professional investors, family-office-style capital pools and private company owners seeking growth funding, buyout succession or transaction advice. Engagements are high-touch and relationship-led: diligence, valuation, structuring, monitoring and exit planning matter as much as origination. The operating shape is therefore closer to fund management and advisory services than to a volume financial product, with European and international deal activity often handled from a London base.
London has 7,817 actively trading private equity firms in this list, making the capital’s private-markets cluster a sizeable pool of managers, advisers and portfolio support entities rather than a narrow buyout-only segment. Reported headcount totals 786 people, which points to a visible employment footprint but also to a market where many entities may be management vehicles, advisory companies or compact specialist teams. The cohort contains both operating-scale managers and younger entities, so revenue ranking is a cleaner guide to the largest firms than incorporation age or simple entity count.
Fund managers and investment advisers usually operate around a regulated perimeter shaped by who controls capital, who gives advice and how interests are marketed to professional investors. Buyout and growth-capital work also brings less formal market-structure constraints: limited-partner reporting cycles, valuation governance, conflicts procedures and portfolio-company oversight. London’s role as an allocator and advisory centre means some entities look like fund managers, while others are transaction advisers or operating partners attached to private company acquisitions. That split matters, because regulatory exposure tends to follow the activity performed rather than the private equity label.
Newer entrants appear numerous, but the operating burden favours managers with repeatable fundraising relationships, credible reporting processes and the capacity to support portfolio companies between transactions. Smaller advisory and deal-originating entities may remain compact, while larger managers tend to add portfolio operations, compliance and investor-relations functions as mandates become more institutional. Fee pressure and longer exit timetables have been pushing attention toward value creation inside existing holdings rather than relying on buoyant sale markets. London should remain attractive for cross-border private markets work, though not every entity in the cohort will develop into a full fund-management platform.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (184 of 7,817 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
36% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (2,823 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Private equity buyers tend to split spending across deal origination, due diligence, portfolio operations, finance, compliance and investor reporting.
London’s market includes investment vehicles, fund managers and diversified operating groups, so supplier qualification often needs activity-level segmentation rather than a single private-equity label.
Compliance workload often sits around anti-money-laundering checks, investor onboarding, valuation governance and reporting controls.
Origination-led teams tend to prioritise market mapping and diligence tooling, while portfolio-operations teams usually buy finance, people, procurement and analytics services.

How London private equity companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Private equity firms make money from fund-management fees, carried interest on realised gains, advisory retainers and transaction-related fees. Their product is not a standardised financial account; it is access to private-company investment strategy, deal sourcing, diligence, structuring, governance and exit execution. Pricing usually follows a percentage fee on committed or invested capital, with performance economics agreed in fund documents. Advisory-only entities may charge retainers or success fees around acquisitions, disposals and capital raises. Engagements are long-dated and relationship-based, so revenue quality depends on fundraising cadence, portfolio performance and repeat allocator confidence rather than short sales cycles.
Who they sell to
Most London private equity firms sell to two related markets: capital providers and private-company stakeholders. On the capital side, buyers are typically pension schemes, insurers, endowments, family-office-style allocators, wealth channels and professional investors, with CIOs, investment committees and consultant gatekeepers shaping approval. On the deal side, they engage founders, management teams, corporate sellers, lenders and advisers. Procurement rarely looks like a simple vendor purchase. Fund commitments move through due diligence questionnaires, reference checks, legal review and committee approval, while transaction opportunities tend to come through adviser networks, sector relationships and direct origination.
What they buy
Most private equity firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce friction in fundraising, diligence, reporting and portfolio oversight. Common software categories include investor CRM, fund accounting, portfolio monitoring, document management, secure data rooms, workflow tools, market intelligence, compliance reporting, cyber security, HR systems and analytics. Service spend often sits with legal advisers, tax advisers, audit, fund administration, valuation support, due diligence providers, communications advisers and recruitment firms. Larger managers may also buy portfolio operations support, procurement benchmarking, technology assessments and finance-transformation help for companies they control, particularly where value creation is more important than financial engineering alone.
Why and how to sell to them
Private equity buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a fundraise is under way, a new fund has closed, reporting demands increase, a portfolio expands, a compliance gap appears or a transaction pipeline becomes harder to manage manually. Outreach works better when it connects to those events rather than a generic efficiency claim. Useful angles include faster investor reporting, cleaner audit trails, lower diligence workload, better visibility across holdings, reduced cyber exposure and more repeatable portfolio-company execution. Credibility matters: sales teams should expect confidentiality concerns, legal review, partner-level scrutiny and a preference for references from comparable regulated or private-markets teams.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
