Investment Banking Companies in London: 1,500+ Active Firms (2026)
Investment banking companies in London advise on capital raising, mergers, acquisitions and securities transactions for corporate and institutional clients.
Buying centres tend to sit with chief financial officers, boards and institutional execution desks, rather than broad departmental software-style users. The commercial motion is mandate-led: advisory retainers, transaction-linked success fees, placement work and execution income, with regulated onboarding and due-diligence packs shaping the sales cycle. Most engagements appear high-touch and relationship-led, supported by valuation, research, document-management and compliance workflows. The buyer mix is chiefly B2B, spanning mid-market corporates, institutional clients and cross-border counterparties; public-sector demand may exist, but the centre of gravity is corporate finance and capital-markets work.
London has 1,515 actively trading investment banking companies in this cohort, giving the capital a sizeable specialist advisory base rather than a small list of universal-bank entities. Reported employment totals 727 people, which points to a market where many firms operate through compact senior teams, associates, compliance staff and outsourced professional support. The shape fits the city’s role as a deal-origination and execution centre for UK and cross-border clients: mandate flow is likely to be uneven, and turnover may depend heavily on completion timing rather than recurring subscription revenue.
FCA oversight is relevant where firms conduct regulated securities execution, placement or capital-markets activity, while some corporate-finance advisory work may sit closer to professional-services practice. That split matters operationally: client onboarding, conflict checks, due diligence, valuation work, research controls and document handling are not ancillary tasks, but part of mandate delivery. Market structure is also relationship-heavy. Smaller advisory houses can compete on sector expertise or client access, but execution work connected to market infrastructure tends to require permissions, process discipline and a compliance culture that a general consultancy would not normally need.
Future development appears likely to be uneven rather than linear. Firms with repeat institutional relationships, sector focus and disciplined compliance operations tend to be better placed to win mandates, while generalist boutiques may face pressure from larger banks, accountants and corporate-finance advisers competing for the same transactions. The recently formed tail suggests continuing entry, but mandate-led revenue exposes young firms to lumpy cash flow and hiring caution. Consolidation is plausible where partners want distribution, regulated permissions or sector coverage, though many owner-managed advisory practices may prefer to stay small and relationship-led.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (35 of 1,515 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
24% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (370 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
London investment-banking searches tend to surface advisory boutiques and specialist corporate-finance houses rather than balance-sheet-heavy banks.
Operating models split between mandate-led M&A advice, placement work, securities-focused activity and smaller capital-markets specialisms.
Clients are usually corporate and institutional buyers seeking support on capital raising, acquisitions, disposals or securities transactions.
Cross-border deal activity is part of the London rationale, alongside links between private companies and public-market investors.

How London investment banking companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London investment banking firms earn through transaction-linked advisory and capital-markets work, so revenue often arrives in uneven bursts rather than monthly subscriptions. Corporate finance advisers may charge retainers for preparation, valuation and buyer outreach, then success fees on completion. Placement and execution-led firms earn from arranging investor access, distributing securities or handling trades, subject to permissions and client categorisation. The service shape is professional advice wrapped in regulated process: senior relationship origination, analyst modelling, research, due diligence, documentation and controlled communications. Pricing is usually bespoke, with fee letters reflecting deal type, complexity, risk and expected senior time.
Who they sell to
Most sell to boards, chief financial officers, chief executives, corporate development teams, treasurers, financial sponsors and institutional execution desks. Mid-market corporates typically buy M&A, debt or capital-raising advice through direct introductions, board networks and adviser shortlists; larger clients may run formal beauty parades or RFP processes. Institutional buyers are more likely to assess permissions, research controls, execution quality and operational resilience before opening a relationship. Fees are rarely bought like software seats: contracts tend to sit in engagement letters, mandate agreements or dealing terms, and the sales cycle often follows strategic events such as refinancing, acquisitions, disposals or market issuance windows.
What they buy
Most investment banking firms tend to spend on tools and services that protect client confidentiality, reduce manual deal work and keep regulated activity auditable. Common categories include CRM, secure document exchange, data rooms, e-signature, KYC and AML checks, conflicts management, communications archiving, market data, financial-modelling support, research distribution and compliance monitoring. Compact firms also buy outsourced accounting, regulatory advice, cyber security, managed IT, legal support, professional indemnity cover, recruitment and sector-specific marketing. Cloud infrastructure matters, but procurement often sits with operations, compliance or a managing partner rather than a large internal technology function.
Why and how to sell to them
Investment banking buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a new mandate type exposes process gaps, when partner hires bring a different client base, or when FCA permissions and compliance expectations change. Other triggers include cross-border deal flow, a move from occasional advisory work into repeat capital-markets activity, headcount growth in analyst teams, or a failed audit trail during client onboarding. Outbound usually works better when it names a live operational constraint: shortening KYC turnaround, improving conflict checks, protecting deal documents, evidencing communications, or helping senior bankers spend less time on administration. Generic productivity claims are easy to ignore in a relationship-led market.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
