Healthcare Companies in Cardiff: 1,704 Active Firms (2026)
Healthcare providers in Cardiff deliver clinical, diagnostic and adult social care services under CQC-regulated frameworks.
Buying centres cluster around clinical governance, safeguarding, care-location operations and commissioning, rather than a single software-style buyer. Cardiff operators in this cohort tend to sell services to public-sector funded pathways, private patients and out-of-pocket demand, with mixed models common across residential, domiciliary, diagnostic and specialist clinical activity. The commercial shape is therefore service-led: contracts often involve ongoing capacity, staffing cover and compliance evidence, while private-patient work is closer to episodic demand. A typical prospect is a registered legal entity with named governance, registered-manager processes and enough operating scale to carry compliance overhead without treating it as an occasional administrative task.
Across Cardiff, 1,704 healthcare providers in this list are actively trading, giving researchers a local operating cohort rather than a proxy for the whole care economy. Reported employment totals 6,076 people among the entities that disclose employee numbers, so the visible headcount footprint is not trivial. The market shape appears mixed: a thinner layer of higher-turnover operators sits above a long tail of specialist clinical, diagnostic, residential and domiciliary providers serving commissioned, private and out-of-pocket demand.
Providers carrying on a CQC-regulated activity in England must register with the Care Quality Commission, and providing that activity without registration is an offence. Registration attaches to the legal entity, the regulated activities and the locations from which care is delivered, so group structure and site expansion are not administrative afterthoughts. Applicants need to show fitness and compliance with the relevant regulations; some services also require a registered manager as a condition of registration. Public-financed care, out-of-pocket treatment and private in-patient or day-case activity sit alongside that registration logic, rather than outside it.
Compliance-heavy local provision gives the Cardiff cohort a split-market feel, with specialist providers operating beside a narrower group able to absorb governance, recruitment and premises costs. Newer entrants tend to face a slower path to scale because registration, safeguarding processes and registered-manager capacity have to be in place before activity can broaden. Consolidation appears plausible where operators need care locations, staff cover or referral access, but the local market is unlikely to move as a uniform block. Specialist clinical and diagnostic providers may keep forming around narrower pathways while social care remains more exposed to commissioning pressure.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (24 of 1,704 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
29% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (509 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Providers carrying on a CQC-regulated activity in England must register with the Care Quality Commission, and providing a regulated activity without registration is an offence.
Registration is tied to the legal entity, regulated activities and locations under the Health and Social Care Act 2008, with some providers also required to have a registered manager.
UK current healthcare expenditure was approximately £317 billion in 2024, including £258 billion government-financed care and £46 billion of out-of-pocket spending.
Private in-patient and day-case admissions reached 238,000 in Q1 2024, 3% above the previous highest quarter and 4% above Q4 2023.
UK healthcare expenditure stood at 11.1% of GDP in 2024, compared with around 9.3% of GDP across OECD countries on a broad health-system measure.

How Cardiff Healthcare companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Cardiff healthcare providers usually earn revenue through a mix of commissioned service income, private-patient fees and out-of-pocket payments. Residential and domiciliary operators are closer to capacity businesses, selling care hours, placements and continuity of cover; diagnostic and specialist clinical providers are more episodic, charging by appointment, pathway or treatment package. Pricing tends to reflect staffing intensity, clinical risk, location costs and the evidence burden attached to regulated activity. Even where the service is people-led rather than software-led, the operating model often depends on repeat utilisation, referral flow and the ability to keep registered locations staffed, documented and inspection-ready.
Who they sell to
Most buyers sit across public-sector commissioning teams, private patients, families, employers and professional referrers, depending on the service line. Decision-makers are rarely a single commercial buyer: registered managers, clinical leads, operations directors, finance directors and procurement heads may all influence a contract. Private work can convert through direct enquiry, referral networks and self-pay booking, while commissioned work tends to involve frameworks, tenders, spot purchasing or contract renewals. Sales cycles are therefore uneven. A diagnostic provider may move a private pathway relatively quickly, while a care-location or domiciliary contract can require governance checks, safeguarding evidence and price negotiation before volume follows.
What they buy
Spend tends to concentrate on workforce, compliance and patient or service-user administration. Most healthcare firms in this segment tend to buy rota and scheduling systems, care planning tools, electronic records, incident reporting, safeguarding workflows, training, payroll, billing, payments, cyber security, information governance support and referral management. Service providers also buy recruitment, temporary staffing, clinical governance advice, accountancy, legal support, insurance, facilities management, equipment maintenance, clinical waste services and marketing for private demand. The smaller operators usually value low implementation burden and clear audit trails; larger local groups are more likely to care about multi-site reporting, permissions, integration and management visibility.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers often come from operational strain rather than discretionary upgrade cycles. New care locations, added regulated activities, registered-manager changes, CQC preparation, staffing shortages, referral growth, occupancy pressure and finance-led margin reviews can all create vendor evaluation moments. Outbound messages tend to work better when they tie the offer to a named operating risk: reducing missed visits, shortening time spent on audit evidence, improving rota fill, managing private enquiries, or making board-level governance easier to evidence. Generic productivity claims are less persuasive than proof that the vendor understands safeguarding, inspection readiness, shift cover and the cost of disruption in live care settings.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
