Heat Pump Companies in the UK: 1,200+ Active Firms (2026)
Heat pump companies design, install, distribute and service low-carbon heating systems for UK homes and commercial buildings.
Buying centres tend to sit mainly in retrofit specification and project delivery, distribution of heating equipment into trade channels, and long-term service or aftercare for buildings with low-carbon systems already installed. Buyers are usually property owners, housebuilders, facilities managers, energy-efficiency contractors and public-sector estates teams, with sales cycles shaped by surveys, installer accreditation and grant eligibility rather than pure product comparison. Engagements range from individual domestic retrofit work to planned replacement programmes across housing, education, healthcare and commercial estates, so credible providers usually need both technical design capacity and field delivery.
The UK cohort contains 1,269 actively trading heat pump and low-carbon heating firms. The larger-revenue segment is 124 with turnover above £5M, while 116 were incorporated since 2022, leaving the market weighted towards established contractors but still adding new retrofit and service entrants. Reported headcount totals 2,863 people. That workforce figure is modest against the operational demands of surveys, installation, commissioning and aftercare, which suggests a sector still reliant on subcontracted field capacity and mixed heating-trade labour rather than a purely dedicated heat-pump workforce.
England and Wales put much of the residential subsidy process through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, with Ofgem handling administration and grant claims. Installations that use the scheme must be installed and commissioned by certified installers, so accreditation sits close to commercial eligibility rather than being a back-office detail. VAT relief for eligible energy-saving materials also affects quotation behaviour. On the supply side, the Clean Heat Market Mechanism links heating-appliance suppliers’ fossil-fuel boiler sales to low-carbon-heating credits, while the Heat Pump Association provides the main trade-body forum for manufacturers, distributors and installers.
Installer economics appear likely to remain the binding constraint. The cohort has many firms close to the heating, electrical and retrofit trades, but fewer operators with the scale to combine design, grant administration, accredited installation and aftercare under a unified operating model. Demand tends to move with grant access, consumer confidence and public-sector estate budgets, which can make order books uneven. Consolidation may favour businesses that can aggregate local installer capacity, carry accreditation costs and manage warranty risk, rather than firms that only source equipment or broker domestic leads.

Key facts
About 9% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (124 of 1,269 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
9% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (116 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Ofgem administers the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England and Wales, with grants of £7,500 for air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps, £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps and £5,000 for biomass boilers.
0% VAT on installation of energy-saving materials including heat pumps applies from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2027.
The Clean Heat Market Mechanism came into force on 1 April 2025 and sets Year 1 low-carbon-heating credit obligations at 6% of relevant boiler sales, with consultation on 8–10% for Year 2.
Certified UK heat-pump installations reached 40,426 in 2023 and more than 42,000 from January to September 2024, with average monthly installations up 39%.
EHPA reported UK sales of around 3.5 heat pumps per 1,000 households in 2024, compared with 48 per 1,000 households in Norway.

How UK heat pump companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Heat pump firms usually make money from a mix of equipment margin, design and survey fees, installation labour, commissioning, and service or warranty packages. Domestic retrofit work is often quoted as a fixed-price project after a site assessment, while commercial and public-estate work tends to sit inside planned maintenance, decarbonisation or replacement programmes. Distributors earn through trade supply and credit terms rather than end-user installation. Larger operators may also package remote monitoring, planned servicing and emergency call-out cover, which gives recurring revenue after the initial system sale and helps smooth demand between project peaks.
Who they sell to
Most sales run through property and estates buying centres rather than pure consumer impulse. Domestic customers often involve an owner-occupier, landlord or retrofit adviser, while larger deals bring in asset managers, facilities directors, sustainability leads, building-services consultants and procurement teams. Housebuilders and contractors tend to buy through preferred-supplier arrangements or negotiated trade channels. Public-sector and housing-association work is more likely to involve framework agreements, tenders and evidence of accreditation, insurance and delivery capacity. Sales cycles are typically survey-led: the buyer needs confidence on heat loss, disruption, subsidy eligibility, running costs and aftercare before signing.
What they buy
Most heat pump firms tend to spend on tools that reduce friction between survey, design, installation and aftercare. Useful categories include field-service scheduling, mobile job management, quotation software, CRM, inventory and van-stock control, finance and cash-collection systems, and document workflows for accreditation and grant claims. Commercial operators may also need asset monitoring, metering, analytics, helpdesk software, cyber security, accounting, HR and fleet management. Services spend often sits around installer recruitment, technical training, health and safety, insurance, planning advice, paid search, local lead generation and bid support for housing or public-estate work.
Why and how to sell to them
Heat pump buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when capacity, compliance or cash flow becomes awkward. Common triggers include a move into multi-site retrofit, a new public-sector tender, a larger distributor relationship, a leadership hire, a depot opening, or a shift from installation-only work into service contracts. Ofgem-administered grant processes and certified installation requirements make evidence, paperwork and audit trails commercially relevant, not just administrative. Outbound messages usually land better when tied to specific operating costs: fewer failed surveys, quicker quote turnaround, lower rework, better warranty control, clearer stock visibility, or higher first-time fix rates.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
