Insurtech Companies in the UK: 49 Active Firms (2026)
Insurtech companies in the UK build digital insurance platforms, data tools and embedded distribution systems for regulated insurance markets.
Buying centres tend to sit with underwriting, claims, distribution, policy administration and data teams, rather than a single generic software budget. The customer base is mainly B2B: insurers, brokers, managing agents, affinity schemes and regulated financial-services groups looking to replace manual workflows or add embedded insurance at the point of sale. Engagements are usually integration-heavy, with proof-of-value work around pricing accuracy, claims handling, quote conversion or compliance auditability before wider rollout. Procurement therefore looks closer to enterprise financial software than to self-serve SaaS, even where the product itself is delivered through cloud platforms and APIs.
The UK cohort contains 49 actively trading insurtech companies, a comparatively narrow list beside broader software categories because insurance distribution, underwriting and claims sit inside regulated buying processes. Reported employment totals 752 people across the cohort, pointing to a market made up largely of specialist product and commercial teams rather than very large technology workforces. That shape fits an industry where enterprise insurers and brokers often test vendors through pilots, delegated authority arrangements or channel partnerships before committing to wider operational change.
Insurance buyers tend to treat insurtech procurement as an operational-risk decision as much as a software purchase. Products touching underwriting, policy administration, claims, pricing or distribution are typically assessed for audit trails, data provenance, model explainability, outsourcing dependency and customer communications. The regulatory burden often falls through the buyer’s permissions and control environment, but vendors still need to evidence security, resilience and fair-treatment safeguards. Embedded distribution adds another constraint: the commercial channel may not look like an insurer, yet the sale of cover still has to fit regulated conduct expectations.
Commercial momentum appears tied less to consumer branding and more to whether vendors can remove cost from underwriting, servicing and claims without creating extra conduct risk. The cohort tends to favour partnership routes into incumbent insurers and brokers, which can lengthen sales cycles but gives products a clearer route to premium volume once embedded. Consolidation remains plausible where adjacent claims, pricing and administration tools overlap. Smaller vendors may find the next phase harder if buyers narrow supplier lists and demand evidence of resilience, auditability and governance before extending deployments.

Key facts
About 30% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (15 of 49 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (3 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Insurtech companies sell into regulated insurance workflows, with products centred on distribution, pricing, claims and compliance rather than generic business software.
Buyer demand is tied to insurers, brokers and affinity distributors moving quote-to-bind, policy administration and claims journeys into digital channels.
Embedded insurance infrastructure supports partner-led distribution, which can favour platform licensing and delegated insurance models.
Regulated intermediaries and software suppliers face different compliance demands depending on their role in distribution, underwriting or claims.

How UK insurtech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Insurtech firms usually earn revenue through subscription software, licence fees, implementation work, transaction fees linked to policies or claims, and sometimes revenue share on distribution partnerships. The product can be rating and underwriting engines, policy administration workflow, claims automation, broker portals, data services or embedded insurance infrastructure. Pricing tends to follow the buyer’s operating model: per-seat for workflow tools, per-policy or per-quote for distribution and rating, and project plus recurring licence for deeper integrations. Services revenue often matters early, because insurers and brokers need configuration, migration and testing before a tool touches live pricing, customer records or claims decisions.
Who they sell to
Most sell into insurers, brokers, managing agents, affinity schemes and financial-services groups with an insurance distribution or servicing need. Day-to-day sponsors are usually heads of underwriting, claims, operations, distribution, product, data or technology, while finance, risk, legal and procurement join once a pilot moves towards production. Contract size is commonly shaped by integration scope, regulated use case and premium or claims volume rather than a simple seat count. Sales cycles tend to be measured by governance checkpoints, with direct enterprise sales the usual route and partner-led channels used where networks or schemes can carry the product into several buyers.
What they buy
Most insurtech firms tend to spend on cloud hosting, data pipelines, security tooling, identity and access management, analytics, document handling, payments, customer communications and integration middleware. As regulated B2B software companies, they also buy legal, compliance, audit, penetration testing, accounting and specialist insurance advice. Commercial teams typically need CRM, sales engagement, proposal, contract and partner-management systems; product teams tend to need observability, testing, incident management and data-quality tools. Hiring spend is often concentrated around insurance domain specialists, engineers, data roles, implementation leads and customer success staff who can translate product functionality into insurer operating language.
Why and how to sell to them
Insurtech buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a pilot is moving into production, a new distribution partner is onboarded, claims volumes stretch manual teams, or a regulated buyer asks for clearer evidence on security, resilience and auditability. Funding, senior hires in sales or technology, and a move from services-heavy delivery to repeatable product revenue can also create buying intent. Outbound tends to land when it is specific to their operating constraint: reducing integration drag, shortening insurer due diligence, improving partner reporting, lowering implementation cost, or helping a small commercial team manage a longer enterprise pipeline without adding administrative load.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
