Journalism Companies in the UK: 1,200+ Active Firms (2026)
Journalism companies in the UK produce, edit and distribute news reporting, analysis and current-affairs content for readers and businesses.
Buying usually sits with editorial, audience, commercial and corporate-insight teams, rather than a technology or procurement desk. Customer groups split between individual readers, advertisers, syndication buyers and business-information users, with business models often combining subscriptions, advertising, licensing, events and newsroom services. Engagement sizes therefore vary widely: low-friction reader revenue at one end, contracted research access, content supply and sponsorship packages at the other. The closest fit for this list is the commercially scaled editorial operator: lean publishers with high output per employee, specialist information producers, or newsroom-service businesses selling repeatable editorial work rather than general marketing support.
Around 1,270 journalism firms are actively trading in the UK. Reported employment is modest relative to the company count, at 1,515 people, which points to a long tail of lean publishers, specialist editorial shops and newsroom-service providers rather than a workforce concentrated only in large newsrooms. Commercially, the cohort contains both reader-facing publishers and B2B information producers, so turnover will tend to reflect a mix of subscriptions, advertising, syndication, licensing and events rather than one standard revenue line.
Journalism has no dedicated licence regime covering the whole category; the relevant obligations tend to follow the activity and revenue model. Reader-funded publishers need clear subscription terms and complaints handling; advertising-funded outlets manage separation between editorial and commercial work; syndicated or licensed material raises copyright and reuse controls; investigative work brings defamation, privacy, contempt and source-protection risk. Specialist business-information publishers also sell to customers who may treat accuracy, archiving and correction processes as procurement issues, not just editorial standards. That market structure favours operators that can evidence editorial controls without turning the business into a regulated financial or legal-advice provider.
The cohort appears likely to remain fragmented. Reader revenue tends to reward trusted niches and habitual use, while advertising leaves many publishers exposed to platform pricing and audience volatility. Specialist information models look more defensible where buyers need repeatable monitoring, archives or expert editing, but those same buyers can be demanding on accuracy and service levels. Early-commercial weight should persist, with consolidation mainly around back-office functions, audience acquisition and content licensing rather than a rush of newsroom expansion. Automation may lower production costs, but it also raises verification and provenance work for editors.

How UK journalism companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Journalism firms earn revenue by packaging editorial judgement into repeatable products: reader subscriptions, paid newsletters, metered access, advertising inventory, sponsored formats, syndication, archive access, events and commissioned newsroom services. Pricing tends to follow the audience or rights being sold. Consumer subscriptions are low-friction and card-led, while B2B information access, content supply and event sponsorship are more often annual contracts or campaign packages. The operational product is usually a mix of reporting, editing, publishing workflow, audience distribution and rights management, with margins shaped by newsroom labour, freelance costs, platform referral patterns and the level of verification required.
Who they sell to
Most sellers in the sector face several buyer groups at once. Individual readers buy directly through self-serve subscription paths; advertisers and agencies buy inventory or sponsorship through commercial teams; corporate users buy monitoring, analysis or archive access through insight, communications, policy, legal or procurement functions. Public-sector and enterprise buyers are more likely to use formal procurement or RFP processes, particularly where content access touches compliance, reputation or public affairs. Small deals can close through inbound interest, while larger licensing, syndication and event packages tend to involve editorial approval, commercial negotiation and usage-rights review before signature.
What they buy
Most journalism firms tend to spend on systems that reduce production friction or improve monetisation without weakening editorial controls. Common purchases include content management, subscription billing, CRM, audience analytics, email delivery, ad operations, consent management, identity, payments, cloud hosting, security, transcription, rights management and archive search. Service spend often sits around media law, accountancy, tax, insurance, recruitment, freelance operations, audience development, events production and research support. Larger editorial operators may also buy workflow automation and data engineering, but buyers will usually ask how changes affect accuracy, corrections, attribution and the separation of editorial and commercial work.
Why and how to sell to them
Journalism buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a commercial model changes: launching paid access, adding a B2B information product, rebuilding advertising operations, expanding events, tightening copyright controls or reducing manual production work. Other triggers include a new commercial lead, a change in editor or publisher, audience churn, advertiser pressure, legal-risk incidents, freelance cost growth and migration away from ageing publishing infrastructure. Outbound angles work better when tied to a measurable newsroom or revenue problem: faster publication checks, fewer billing exceptions, cleaner rights records, lower churn, better campaign reporting or clearer audit trails. Generic productivity claims usually land poorly with editors.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
