Journalism Companies in London: 500+ Active Firms (2026)
News and journalism companies in London produce reporting, analysis and editorial media for readers, subscribers and commercial audiences across the capital.
Buying demand is split between editorial commissioning, audience development, commercial partnerships and licensing. Consumer publishers sell subscriptions, newsletters, podcasts and events directly to readers, while professional outlets package reporting for corporate users, trade associations and specialist advertisers. B2B titles tend to involve slower sales cycles, where corporate licences, sponsorship, syndication and conference access sit alongside editorial output. Smaller teams often centre on a narrow beat or local readership; larger operators add product, analytics, sales operations and rights management around the newsroom. The practical buying centre is rarely just editorial: finance, marketing, events and commercial teams often shape the contract.
London has 527 actively trading news and journalism companies in this list, making the capital a concentrated base for editorial production and media commercialisation rather than a dispersed local-publishing market. Reported employment totals 1,657 staff, which points to a cohort with many lean editorial businesses as well as a smaller group of larger newsroom and commercial operations. Revenue scale is uneven: 26 firms report more than £5M in turnover, while 106 were incorporated since 2022, suggesting regular new formation alongside a relatively shallow layer of scaled publishers.
Editorial operators face a mixed rulebook even when they are not in a formally licensed sector. Defamation, privacy, copyright, contempt risk and source protection shape commissioning and legal review, while advertising-funded models add disclosure, native-advertising and consumer-protection questions. UK publishers also carry operational obligations around subscriber records, marketing permissions and audience analytics. The market structure is therefore partly legal and partly distributional: reputation, access to specialist contributors and control over direct reader relationships matter because platform referral traffic and advertising demand can move independently of newsroom output.
The London cohort appears likely to keep splitting between specialist editorial teams and larger media businesses that bundle subscriptions, events, sponsorship and licensing. Early-commercial publishers tend to prove audience depth before expanding commercial headcount, so scale-up scarcity may persist outside niches with professional readers or high-value advertisers. Consolidation is plausible where overlapping beats compete for the same readership, but acquisition interest is likely to follow audience quality rather than publication volume. Pressure on search referral traffic and paid subscription conversion should keep attention on first-party audiences, editorial trust and repeat-use products.

Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (26 of 527 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
20% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (106 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
London journalism firms serve a mix of reader, subscriber and commercial audiences, with national and specialist publishing models both present.
The capital’s media buying activity and corporate communications demand make it a natural base for publishers selling to commercial customers.
Some higher-revenue publishing entities appear to hold rights or commercial activity while employment sits in outsourced or group-level structures.
Editorial output spans reporting, analysis and other newsroom-led media formats rather than a single product category.

How London journalism companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Journalism businesses earn from selling attention, access and editorial rights, not just articles. Reader products are usually monthly or annual subscriptions, memberships, paid newsletters, podcasts, print packages or event tickets. Commercial income often comes through display advertising, sponsorship, branded content, job listings, lead generation, syndication and archive licensing. Professional titles may sell seat-based or site-wide access to corporate users, with add-ons for briefings, analyst-style reports and conference attendance. Pricing therefore ranges from low-friction card payments to negotiated packages where editorial credibility, audience profile and usage rights determine the value more than production volume.
Who they sell to
Most London journalism sellers work across two buyer groups: readers who pay directly, and organisations that buy audience access, information or influence. Consumer subscriptions are commonly self-serve, with retention owned by audience, product and marketing teams. Corporate licences tend to involve heads of insight, communications, policy, legal, strategy or knowledge management, with procurement and finance joining where usage rights or multiple seats are involved. Advertising and sponsorship buyers are usually marketing directors, agency planners, partnership leads or sector suppliers. Sales cycles can be short for reader conversion, but longer for enterprise access, sponsored editorial programmes and event partnerships.
What they buy
Most journalism firms tend to spend on tools and services that protect direct audience relationships and reduce editorial operating friction. Common categories include content management, paywalls, subscriber billing, CRM, email delivery, marketing automation, audience analytics, advertising operations, event ticketing, webinar production and rights management. Newsrooms also buy transcription, media monitoring, research databases, image and video licensing, freelancer management, legal review, insurance and cyber security. Larger operators usually add finance systems, data warehousing, identity management, procurement tooling and HR systems. Agencies and consultants can find demand around subscription conversion, search strategy, sponsor sales enablement, reader research and newsroom process design.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a publisher changes revenue mix, launches a new beat, moves more readers behind registration, adds events, hires commercial leadership or tries to replace platform-dependent traffic with first-party audience growth. Pain points are usually practical: churn, low conversion from casual readers, fragmented subscriber records, manual commissioning, slow ad operations, rights leakage, legal review delays and difficulty proving sponsor returns. Outbound messages tend to land better when they reference the commercial model rather than journalism in the abstract. A pitch to a subscription-led title should emphasise retention and reader value; a sponsorship-led title will care more about audience evidence and campaign delivery.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
