Beauty Companies in London: 13,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Beauty companies make, distribute, retail or deliver cosmetics, grooming and personal-care products and services across London.
Buying centres tend to split between product procurement, salon and treatment operations, ecommerce merchandising, and wholesale distribution. Owner-managed salons and specialist retailers buy locally and in modest batches, while mid-market brand owners and distributors need repeatable supply, fulfilment and compliance processes for wider UK channels. Engagements range from ad hoc stock supply and treatment provision to recurring wholesale, white-label manufacturing and premises-based service relationships. The London base matters less as a single customer market than as a route to dense retail footfall, international consumers and trade buyers clustered around the capital.
London has 13,148 actively trading beauty companies, giving the capital a sizeable long tail of salons, ecommerce labels, specialist retailers and wholesale suppliers. Reported employment totals 1,668 people, so the headcount footprint captured here is concentrated in relatively few disclosed employers rather than spread evenly across every micro-operator. Only 74 companies report turnover above £5M, while 4,964 were incorporated since 2022, which points to a cohort weighted towards small and early-commercial businesses alongside a thinner mid-market layer.
Compliance sits at both product and premises level. Cosmetic products made available in Great Britain need a UK-established Responsible Person, with duties covering safety, a Product Information File, qualified safety assessment, OPSS notification before consumer availability, and reporting of serious harmful effects. Manufacturing also has to follow good manufacturing practice. Service-led operators face local-authority licensing where treatments fall within massage or special-treatment regimes, including manicure, sunbeds, electrolysis, and heat, light or vapour treatments; skin-piercing treatment licensing is typically handled separately outside most of Greater London.
London’s mix of young product labels, owner-managed salons and wholesale distributors appears set to keep the market fragmented. Product-led entrants tend to spend early effort on formulation, claims control, safety documentation and route-to-market discipline, which can slow the move from launch to repeat retail supply. Service-led operators face a different constraint: premises, staff scheduling, licensing and local reputation matter as much as consumer demand. Consolidation has been more plausible around distribution, multi-site services and ecommerce operations than among small neighbourhood salons, where founder involvement remains central to the customer relationship.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (74 of 13,148 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
37% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (4,964 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Cosmetic products in Great Britain need a UK-established Responsible Person, a Product Information File, a qualified safety assessment and OPSS notification before consumer availability.
GOV.UK says cosmetic manufacturing must comply with good manufacturing practice, with ISO 22716 cited as a way to demonstrate this.
Beauty-service establishments offering massage or special treatments may need a council premises licence; examples include manicure, sunbeds, electrolysis, and heat, light or vapour treatments.
CTPA reported £10.3 billion in 2024 toiletries and beauty sales, +8.4% year-on-year, while category volumes were relatively flat.
The British Beauty Council reported a £13.5 billion direct contribution to UK GDP in 2023, or £27.2 billion including supply-chain and employee-spending effects.

How London beauty companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Beauty businesses in London usually earn through a mix of product margin, treatment fees, wholesale mark-up and service retainers. Product-led firms sell skincare, haircare, fragrance, grooming and cosmetics through direct ecommerce, retail stockists, distributors or white-label supply, with pricing shaped by gross margin, minimum order quantities and repeat purchase rates. Service-led operators sell appointments, memberships, treatment packages and aftercare products from licensed premises. Cashflow can be lumpy: small baskets and appointments sit beside larger wholesale or manufacturing engagements, often with deposits, payment terms, sampling costs and returns allowances built into the economics.
Who they sell to
Customer bases split by route to market. Salons and clinics mostly sell to local consumers, tourists and repeat clients; product-led labels sell to ecommerce shoppers, specialist retailers, professional salons, distributors and category buyers; wholesale suppliers sell to retailers, salon groups and label owners. Buying decisions at smaller firms often sit with the founder, salon owner or general manager, where cycles can be short and price-sensitive. Mid-market operators usually involve merchandising, operations, finance, quality or procurement teams, with longer evaluation around margin, claims, stock availability, safety documentation and fulfilment reliability. Partner-led introductions and trade referrals still matter, but direct outreach works when it maps clearly to the buyer's channel.
What they buy
Most beauty firms tend to spend on systems and services that keep stock, bookings, compliance and customer retention under control. Common software needs include ecommerce, point-of-sale, appointment booking, inventory, order management, accounting, payroll, rota planning, customer messaging, loyalty, analytics and review management. Product-led firms also buy formulation support, testing, labelling, packaging, product photography, fulfilment, warehousing, import advice, insurance and legal review of claims. Service-led firms buy recruitment, training, premises maintenance, payment processing, hygiene supplies and local marketing. For sellers, the useful split is often product operations versus premises operations, because the budget owner and urgency differ.
Why and how to sell to them
Beauty buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when a practical constraint starts to bite: a launch range needs compliant documentation, a salon adds treatment capacity, an ecommerce line moves into wholesale, a distributor takes on more stock, or a founder hires an operations or finance lead. Margin pressure, stockouts, staff scheduling, customer churn, returns and retailer chargebacks all create plausible entry points. Outbound works better when it is tied to a specific operating problem, such as lowering wasted stock, improving re-order accuracy, evidencing product claims, filling appointment diaries or shortening fulfilment hand-offs. Generic growth messaging is easier to ignore in this fragmented market.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
