Livestock & Dairy Companies in the UK: 8,800+ Active Firms (2026)
Livestock and dairy companies rear animals and produce milk, meat and related farm outputs under UK animal welfare and food-safety rules.
Procurement sits around recurring buying centres: dairy collection and milk processing, meat supply and slaughter/processing routes, livestock rearing for cattle, sheep, poultry and pigs, and farm animal services that keep herds and flocks registered, moved and saleable. Customers tend to be agricultural supply chains rather than office-based buyers: processors, distributors, exporters, larger agribusinesses and neighbouring farms. Engagements are usually operational rather than project-led, covering milk supply agreements, live-animal movements, welfare assurance, veterinary-adjacent services and food-safety paperwork. At the larger end, turnover and employee thresholds matter because they indicate capacity to serve processors and multi-site supply arrangements.
The UK has 8,896 actively trading livestock and dairy companies, with 210 above £5M turnover and 1,492 incorporated since 2022. The cohort therefore has a wide base of newer farm and animal-services operators, alongside a thinner tier of larger agribusinesses. Reported employment across the cohort totals 156,902 people, a direct footprint that reflects farms, producer vehicles and supply-chain service businesses rather than office-centred enterprises.
Oversight splits by activity and jurisdiction. Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency shape the Great Britain regime for notifiable disease reporting, animal welfare concerns, livestock and poultry registration, non-TB movement licensing, and imports or exports of animals and animal products. Slaughterhouse welfare is a separate control point in England and Wales: the Food Standards Agency applies and enforces the regime on behalf of Defra and the Welsh Government, with Official Veterinarians monitoring approved premises. Staff involved in slaughter must be trained and hold a Certificate of Competence. Northern Ireland operates through separate agriculture department delivery arrangements, so cross-border supply chains need jurisdiction-specific compliance processes.
Commercial pressure appears likely to keep the cohort split between family-scale operators, specialist animal-service providers and a smaller set of agribusinesses able to meet processor, retailer and export requirements. Compliance work tends to favour operators with repeatable processes for welfare evidence, movement documentation and traceability, while smaller farms may remain exposed to disease events, labour constraints and input-cost volatility. Consolidation appears more plausible around processing relationships, multi-site herds and service platforms than around a national roll-up. Dairy and meat supply chains also remain sensitive to procurement terms set downstream, so scale alone is not a guarantee of pricing power.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (210 of 8,896 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (1,492 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency oversee notifiable disease reporting, livestock and poultry registration, animal movement licensing, and trade in animals and animal products in Great Britain.
Slaughterhouse welfare controls in England and Wales are applied by the FSA, with Official Veterinarians monitoring welfare in approved slaughterhouses.
Defra’s 2024 farming evidence pack counted 209,000 UK farm holdings using 17 million hectares.
Livestock accounted for 63% of the value of UK agricultural production in 2024, worth £20.1 billion; dairy was the largest livestock output at £6.3 billion.
Eurostat reported EU raw milk production of 161.8 million tonnes in 2024, with 96% coming from cows’ milk.

How UK livestock & dairy companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Livestock and dairy companies earn revenue from physical production, handling and assurance-heavy services rather than office-centred projects. Dairy operators typically work through milk supply agreements, collection schedules and quality-linked payments, while meat supply businesses may price on liveweight, deadweight, headage, processing fees or repeat service charges. Farm animal service providers add income through registrations, movement support, welfare checks, transport, handling, breeding-adjacent work and paperwork needed to keep animals saleable. Pricing is often operational: per litre, per animal, per load, per visit, per season or through standing supply arrangements. Margins can be exposed to feed, labour, energy, disease-control and processor terms.
Who they sell to
Most sell into agricultural and food supply chains rather than broad consumer channels. Typical buyers include milk processors, meat processors, livestock markets, distributors, export intermediaries, larger farms, producer groups and integrated food businesses. Decision-making is often shared between owner-operators, farm managers, operations directors, procurement managers, quality managers and technical assurance teams. Routine transactions can move quickly when animals, collection slots or veterinary-adjacent services are needed, while processor, retailer or export-linked supply arrangements tend to involve longer qualification, site checks and welfare documentation. Direct relationships, agents, producer groups and market-based channels are common; formal RFPs are more likely around larger processing or multi-site service contracts.
What they buy
Most livestock and dairy firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce operational leakage, keep records audit-ready and protect animal throughput. Relevant categories include herd and flock management software, traceability tools, movement and registration support, quality management, food-safety documentation, transport scheduling, route planning, cold-chain monitoring, weighbridge systems, feed and nutrition planning, accounting, payroll, HR, insurance, energy procurement and waste handling. Larger operators may also need cyber security, finance systems, asset finance advice, legal support, recruitment, environmental reporting and equipment maintenance. Services that fit farm timetables, work with low-admin teams and support evidence for processors or regulators are easier to position than generic office productivity claims.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when paperwork risk starts to threaten payment, audit outcomes or market access. Triggers include new processor contracts, expansion into additional sites, succession in a family-run business, a new operations or quality hire, investment in housing or milking equipment, disease-control pressure, export activity, labour shortages, or repeated audit findings. Outreach tends to work better when it links the offer to a concrete operational problem: fewer rejected loads, cleaner movement records, easier welfare evidence, lower admin time, better scheduling, clearer margin visibility or less disruption during inspections. Livestock and dairy buyers are usually wary of abstract efficiency language; proof points should be practical, seasonal and tied to cash flow.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
