Oil and Gas Companies in Manchester: 93 Active Firms (2026)
Oil and gas companies in Manchester supply, engineer and service upstream and downstream energy operations across the metropolitan area.
Buying centres sit with engineering, operations, procurement and commercial teams rather than consumer channels. The more relevant buyers are mid-market and enterprise energy producers, infrastructure owners, industrial customers and specialist contractors that need technical services, equipment, project delivery, maintenance, logistics or commercial support. Sales cycles therefore tend to be tender-led and assurance-heavy, with decisions shaped by uptime, site access, insurance, safety documentation and supplier qualification. Typical engagements look more like infrastructure or industrial-service contracts than low-touch software subscriptions: higher-value, business-to-business, and often tied to a particular asset, project or production chain across Greater Manchester and the wider UK supply base.
Manchester has 93 actively trading oil and gas firms, making this a compact local cohort rather than a broad national supply-chain sample. Among firms reporting employment, headcount totals 862 people, which points to a market weighted towards lean operating units and service businesses rather than uniformly large employers. The commercial centre of gravity sits in business-to-business supply, engineering support and project delivery for producers, infrastructure owners, industrial customers and contractors across Greater Manchester and wider UK supply chains. The 12 firms above £5M turnover give researchers a small revenue-ranked subset to examine before moving into earlier-stage or asset-light entities, including 22 firms incorporated since 2022.
Manchester firms sit in a supplier-heavy part of the oil and gas chain, so regulatory exposure tends to arrive through customer procurement as much as direct licensing. Engineering, logistics, maintenance and commercial-support providers are usually pulled into health, safety, environmental, quality and audit requirements set by producers, infrastructure owners and industrial customers. Asset-holding or distribution-related entities face a more formal permitting burden, while service contractors often feel regulation through tender pre-qualification, insurance cover, site access rules and documentation standards. That market structure favours suppliers able to evidence compliance without building the overheads of a full operator.
Scale-up scarcity appears more important than new demand creation in this Manchester market. A small revenue-ranked group can keep winning work from established energy customers, while the longer tail of contractors, asset vehicles and technical service providers tends to move with maintenance cycles, infrastructure budgets and procurement appetite. Smaller suppliers may narrow into specialist tasks or partner with larger delivery groups where insurance, site access and compliance evidence become harder to carry alone. Consolidation is plausible where service overlap is high, but the cohort still looks more like a practical supply-chain market than a venture-style software or consumer-growth story.

Key facts
About 12% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 93 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
23% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (22 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Manchester oil and gas suppliers sit mainly in contractor, equipment, project-support and trading roles between energy producers, industrial users and infrastructure operators.
The sector spans upstream and downstream activity, so procurement tends to cover engineering support, site services, equipment supply and operational maintenance.
Sales cycles in this market are usually shaped by project timetables, safety requirements and framework-style purchasing rather than high-volume transactional demand.

How Manchester oil and gas companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Manchester oil and gas businesses typically earn through project fees, equipment supply, maintenance contracts, logistics charges, consultancy, fabrication, inspection, and commercial support for energy assets. Revenue is usually tied to work packages, call-off agreements, day rates, fixed-price scopes, retainers, or margins on specialist parts and consumables. The product shape is mixed: physical kit, field labour, engineering documentation, compliance evidence, and operational know-how often sit in the same sale. Cash collection can depend on milestone approval, purchase-order discipline and customer sign-off, so suppliers care about utilisation, margin leakage, insurance cost and the administrative load around each job.
Who they sell to
Most sell to procurement, engineering, operations and commercial teams at producers, infrastructure owners, industrial sites, fuel distributors and larger contractors. Common decision-makers include operations directors, engineering managers, supply-chain leads, HSE managers, finance controllers and project directors, with procurement often controlling supplier onboarding and framework access. Sales cycles tend to involve technical qualification, safety checks, insurance review, site references and commercial negotiation before a purchase order is issued. Lower-risk repeat work may come through approved-supplier lists, while larger or unfamiliar scopes are more likely to move through formal tenders, site visits and multi-stakeholder evaluation.
What they buy
Oil and gas firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce admin around industrial work: project accounting, bid management, CRM, document control, asset maintenance, field-service scheduling, inventory, fleet, quality management, health and safety reporting, environmental reporting and contractor management. Cybersecurity, cloud hosting, backup, finance, payroll and workforce planning also matter where small teams handle customer audits and site documentation. Outside software, likely buying categories include legal support, insurance, technical recruitment, training, certification, calibration, inspection, marketing for tender credibility, accounting, tax, plant hire, logistics, testing and specialist consultancy around regulated operating environments.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when firms win a new maintenance package, join or renew a framework, fail a customer audit, replace spreadsheet-led job control, take on site-based staff, or need clearer margin visibility across project work. Insurance renewals, HSE incidents, leadership changes and pressure from larger customers can also force a review of suppliers and internal systems. Outbound is usually more credible when it links to uptime, tender readiness, compliance evidence, faster document retrieval, fewer invoice disputes or better control of contractor cost. Generic growth messaging tends to land poorly; operational proof and sector-specific workflow detail matter more.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
