Renewable Energy Companies in Manchester: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Renewable-energy companies generate, develop, finance or operate low-carbon power and heat assets across Manchester's metropolitan economy.
Buying centres tend to sit with energy procurement, estates and facilities teams, finance functions and public-sector decarbonisation teams. The customer base is mostly commercial, industrial, public-sector or energy-market counterparties across Great Britain, rather than consumer-only demand. Engagements are usually contract-led and asset-linked: installation programmes, generation or supply arrangements, operating contracts, asset finance and compliance work under the Ofgem framework. The Manchester cohort therefore spans lean specialist operators, developers and suppliers through to mid-market firms handling larger operational or capital commitments.
Manchester has 130 actively trading renewable-energy companies across generation, development, supply, installation and asset-operation activity. Reported employment totals 1,000 people across the cohort, giving the city-region an operating footprint beyond advisory and project-origination work alone. Scale is uneven: 24 companies report more than £5M turnover, while the rest appear closer to specialist operator, installer or early-commercial status. That mix fits a metropolitan market serving local estates, industrial demand and wider Great Britain energy-market customers.
Generation, movement and supply of energy in Great Britain fall within Ofgem’s licensing framework. Businesses must hold the relevant licence and comply with standard and any special licence conditions once authorised. The Renewables Obligation remains part of the compliance background even though it is closed to new generating capacity: accredited stations remain subject to audit and compliance checks and submit generation information for certificates. RenewableUK provides a sector forum around deployment and export activity, but market access still depends on licence conditions and counterparty requirements.
Project-led operators appear likely to keep separating from smaller installation and advisory businesses as buyers ask for delivery capacity, compliance evidence and balance-sheet resilience. Manchester’s cohort tends to sit close to commercial estates, public-sector procurement and industrial energy demand, which should keep the market practical rather than speculative. Scale-up scarcity may remain a constraint: asset-heavy models need patient capital, while suppliers and operators face margin pressure from regulation and wholesale-market exposure. Consolidation appears more plausible than a broad wave of new entrants.

Key facts
About 18% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (24 of 130 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (8 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Ofgem licences renewable-energy businesses that generate, move or supply energy in Great Britain, with standard and any special licence conditions applying once granted.
The Renewables Obligation is closed to all new generating capacity, but accredited stations still face audit/compliance checks and generation-data submissions for certificates.
UK renewables generated 50.8% of electricity in 2024, up from 46.4% in 2023, with output rising to 144.7 TWh from 135.8 TWh.
Wind contributed 29.5% of UK electricity generation in 2024, split between 17.2% offshore wind and 12.3% onshore wind.
The IEA’s Renewables 2024 outlook expects annual renewable capacity additions to rise from 666 GW in 2024 to almost 935 GW in 2030, with solar PV and wind forecast to account for 95% of additions.

How Manchester renewable energy companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Renewable-energy businesses in Manchester usually earn revenue through project development, installation, asset ownership, energy supply, maintenance and compliance-led services. Some sell generated power or heat under contracted offtake arrangements; others make money from design, procurement, construction management, metering, monitoring or ongoing operation of customer sites. Pricing tends to follow the asset: capex quotations for installation work, long-run operating contracts for managed assets, margin-based supply models, and retainer or day-rate structures for advisory and compliance support. The product shape is therefore part physical infrastructure, part regulated service and part recurring operational support, with working capital and delivery risk sitting closer to construction and utilities than pure software.
Who they sell to
Most sell to organisations with buildings, industrial loads, land, generation assets or public decarbonisation budgets. Typical buyers include estates directors, energy managers, CFOs, procurement teams, sustainability heads and operations leaders, with technical sign-off often coming from facilities, engineering or grid-facing teams. Smaller installations may move through direct sales after a site survey, while larger projects usually involve tenders, framework purchasing, consultants, legal review and board-level capex approval. Sales cycles tend to be slower where planning, grid connection, landlord consent or public procurement rules are involved. Energy-market counterparties buy through more specialist commercial channels, where creditworthiness, settlement capability and Ofgem compliance matter as much as price.
What they buy
Most renewable-energy firms tend to spend on tools and services that help them originate, deliver and monitor projects without losing control of margin or compliance. Common software needs include CRM, bid tracking, quote-to-contract workflows, billing, field-service scheduling, asset monitoring, metering, forecasting, reporting, cyber security, finance systems and document control. Service spend often clusters around legal, planning, grid-connection advice, audit, tax, insurance, health and safety, recruitment and specialist engineering support. Asset operators may also buy cloud infrastructure, data integration and analytics to connect site performance with finance and customer reporting. Installers and developers are often more interested in reducing survey, design, procurement and handover friction than buying generic back-office software.
Why and how to sell to them
Renewable-energy buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a project pipeline moves from opportunistic to repeatable, when compliance workload grows, or when new contracts expose gaps in reporting, cash collection or operational control. Other triggers include a new Ofgem-facing activity, a finance raise, a senior operations or finance hire, expansion from installation into managed assets, or pressure from customers for better evidence on performance and carbon outcomes. Outbound works better when it ties the pitch to a specific operational constraint: fewer failed handovers, faster invoice readiness, cleaner audit trails, better project-margin visibility, or reduced manual work across metering, maintenance and customer reporting. Generic sustainability messaging usually lands less well than cost, risk and delivery evidence.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
