Renewable Energy Companies in London: 500+ Active Firms (2026)
Renewable energy companies generate, develop, finance or supply low-carbon power and related services across London’s energy market.
Buying centres tend to sit with corporate energy procurement, project-finance teams, asset managers, estates and facilities functions, and infrastructure or grid-flexibility teams. Customer demand is mostly business-to-business, with public-sector estates and local infrastructure buyers also relevant where heat networks, installation, storage or flexibility work is involved. Engagements can be narrow project-vehicle contracts with high revenue but lean staffing, or longer service relationships for optimisation, supply administration, power trading support and compliance reporting. The commercial pattern is therefore not a simple software-style subscription market: much of the cohort is shaped by asset ownership, metered output, grid connection work and counterparty credit.
London has 585 renewable energy companies actively trading; 74 have more than £5M turnover, and 110 were incorporated since 2022. Reported employment totals 580 people across the firms with headcount disclosed. That headcount sits alongside a cohort where many entities appear to be asset-heavy, financing-led or project-specific rather than payroll-heavy operators. The pattern fits a capital-and-contracting market in which a generator, storage vehicle or trading entity can carry sizeable revenue through metered output or wholesale activity, while installation, optimisation and advisory providers tend to show more conventional staffing footprints.
Ofgem licensing is the main boundary condition for London operators whose activities involve generating, moving or supplying energy in Great Britain. Once licensed, firms must meet standard licence conditions and any special conditions attached to their activity, so compliance work tends to sit close to trading, operations and finance rather than as a purely legal function. Legacy renewable-support schemes still matter for accredited stations: the Renewables Obligation is closed to new generating capacity, but operators with accredited assets remain subject to audit and compliance checks and must submit generation information for certificates. RenewableUK provides a trade-body channel for sector representation and policy engagement.
Early-commercial and project-vehicle structures appear likely to remain common, particularly where revenue is tied to asset ownership, grid access or trading arrangements rather than employee scale. Scale-ups may be scarcer than the company count alone suggests, because licence obligations, connection constraints and working-capital needs tend to favour better-capitalised owners and specialist operators. Consolidation pressure has been visible across energy supply and infrastructure services, and London’s cohort may keep splitting between finance-led asset platforms and smaller service providers. The former will tend to compete on access to capital and counterparties; the latter on compliance competence, installation capacity and operational reliability.

Key facts
About 12% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (74 of 585 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
18% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (110 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Companies that generate, move or supply energy in Great Britain need an Ofgem licence and must comply with standard and any special licence conditions once granted.
The Renewables Obligation is closed to all new generating capacity, while accredited stations remain subject to audit and generation-reporting requirements for certificates.
UK renewables generated 50.8% of UK electricity in 2024, up from 46.4% in 2023, with renewable output reaching 144.7 TWh.
Wind supplied 29.5% of UK electricity generation in 2024, including 17.2% from offshore wind and 12.3% from onshore wind.
RenewableUK reports that it supports over 500 member companies across deployment and export activity.

How London renewable energy companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London renewable energy firms usually earn through a blend of asset income and fee income. Generators and storage vehicles monetise metered output, wholesale activity, balancing work or long-term offtake arrangements, while developers earn through project origination, construction management and asset sales. Service providers tend to charge project fees, retainers or usage-linked fees for installation, optimisation, trading support, reporting and supply administration. Engagement size varies by model: a small project vehicle can carry high revenue with limited staff, while advisory, software-enabled and installation firms look more like recurring service businesses with account management, renewals and delivery capacity.
Who they sell to
Buyers are typically corporate energy teams, estates and facilities directors, infrastructure investors, asset managers, public-sector estates teams and procurement functions with energy exposure. Finance and legal teams often enter the process early because contracts touch credit risk, asset ownership, grid access or long-term operating liabilities. Sales routes are commonly direct, relationship-led and document-heavy, with formal RFPs more likely where public-sector bodies, infrastructure funds or large corporates are involved. Shorter cycles tend to sit around advisory, reporting and installation scopes; longer cycles are more common where supply, generation, trading or financing commitments need board-level approval.
What they buy
Most renewable energy firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce operational, regulatory and financial friction. Relevant categories include asset monitoring, forecasting, scheduling, trading operations, billing, contract management, customer relationship management, finance systems, cyber security, cloud infrastructure, analytics and compliance workflow tools. They also buy legal, accounting, insurance, tax, audit, recruitment, grid advisory, planning, engineering and marketing services. Asset-heavy businesses may prioritise project finance support, lender reporting and portfolio controls, while service-led firms are more likely to need sales operations, field-service management, workforce planning and customer support tooling.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when renewable energy companies move from development into operation, take on new assets, apply for or vary Ofgem-regulated activities, prepare for audit, add trading exposure or try to serve larger corporate and public-sector customers. Common pain points include working-capital pressure, counterparty credit checks, connection delays, fragmented operational reporting and the cost of keeping compliance close to finance and trading. Sellers tend to get further when they anchor outreach to a specific operational trigger, such as reducing manual reporting effort, shortening month-end reconciliation, improving asset visibility or making procurement evidence easier to produce.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
