Renewable Energy Companies in Aberdeen: 41 Active Firms (2026)
Renewable energy companies generate, develop, supply or support low-carbon power and heat across Aberdeen's energy cluster.
Buying centres tend to sit with asset owners, utility-facing project teams, industrial energy users, local authorities and contractors tied to the Aberdeen supply chain. Sales are less about low-value software procurement than about engineering scopes, maintenance agreements, grid-connection work, power or heat supply contracts and specialist advisory work. The better fit is usually a B2B or public-sector supplier serving mid-market and enterprise customers, rather than a household installer. Aberdeen’s renewable energy cohort therefore overlaps with offshore services, grid services, storage, low-carbon heat and project engineering, with engagements often involving technical qualification, safety assurance and regulated-market counterparties.
Aberdeen accounts for 41 actively trading renewable energy companies in this list, a small but specialised local cluster rather than a broad national market. Reported employment across the cohort is 1,046 people, suggesting that the list includes operating and services businesses as well as project developers. Only 3 sit above £5M of turnover, and 5 were incorporated since 2022. The shape is consistent with a regional energy base where larger engineering and asset-service workloads sit alongside younger project, heat and grid-services firms.
Ofgem’s licensing framework matters for any Aberdeen operator whose activities include generating, moving or supplying energy in Great Britain. Licence holders must comply with standard conditions and any special conditions attached to the relevant activity, which can affect revenue models, operational reporting and counterparty requirements. The Renewables Obligation is closed to new generating capacity, but accredited stations remain within audit and compliance processes and must submit generation information for certificates. Renewable electricity also has an organised trade-body layer, reflecting the sector’s deployment and export agenda rather than a uniform purchaser market.
Aberdeen’s renewable-energy base appears likely to remain tied to the wider energy-services economy, with project engineering, offshore capability and compliance-heavy operating work shaping commercial demand. The cohort has a relatively small number of scaled revenue reporters, so supplier lists may change as younger developers secure projects, partner with larger contractors or exit through asset sales. Procurement tends to favour businesses that can evidence technical delivery, regulated-market familiarity and workforce capacity. Consolidation may be more visible in services and project portfolios than in standalone generation, particularly where grid access, maintenance obligations and customer credit quality set the pace.

Key facts
About 7% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (3 of 41 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
12% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Ofgem requires licences for companies generating, moving or supplying energy in Great Britain, with standard and any special licence conditions applying once granted.
UK renewables generated 50.8% of electricity in 2024, up from 46.4% in 2023, and output reached 144.7 TWh, up from 135.8 TWh.
Wind supplied 29.5% of UK electricity in 2024, split between 17.2% offshore wind and 12.3% onshore wind.
The Renewables Obligation is closed to all new generating capacity, while accredited stations remain subject to audit and compliance checks.
The IEA’s Renewables 2024 outlook says annual renewable capacity additions rise from 666 GW in 2024 to almost 935 GW in 2030, with solar PV and wind forecast to account for 95% of additions.

How Aberdeen Renewable Energy companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Aberdeen renewable-energy companies typically earn revenue through project development fees, asset-operation contracts, engineering work, maintenance retainers, grid-services income and power or heat supply agreements. Some act as project sponsors that monetise consented or operating assets; others sell specialist services into offshore, storage, low-carbon heat or network-adjacent work. Pricing tends to follow the risk being taken: fixed-price engineering scopes for defined work, time-and-materials for advisory and inspection, availability or performance-linked fees for operations, and longer-term offtake or service contracts where they control an asset. Gross margins can vary widely, so sales conversations often turn on safety, uptime, grid access, counterparty credit and contract duration rather than simple subscription cost.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually asset owners, utilities, large energy users, public-sector estates, construction contractors and offshore-service supply chains. Decision makers tend to include project directors, technical directors, asset managers, heads of procurement, health-and-safety leads, energy managers and finance teams where offtake or capex approval is involved. Sales cycles are normally measured in months rather than weeks because buyers need technical evidence, site access plans, insurance, safety cases and contract allocation agreed before award. Contract value tends to be shaped by asset exposure and site complexity, with consultancy at one end and multi-party delivery packages at the other. Smaller advisory or inspection jobs may move through direct relationships, while larger engineering, maintenance, heat or grid-related work often comes through frameworks, RFPs, developer panels or prime-contractor channels.
What they buy
Most Aberdeen renewable-energy firms tend to spend on tools and services that reduce delivery risk rather than generic office efficiency. Relevant categories include project controls, asset management, field-service scheduling, remote monitoring, data analytics, forecasting, metering workflows, document control, cyber security, health-and-safety systems and procurement software. Firms with supply or heat contracts may also need billing, customer operations and credit-control capability. Common services include planning support, grid-connection advice, regulatory compliance, contract law, insurance brokerage, audit, recruitment for technical roles, training, marketing to enterprise buyers and bid-writing support for framework opportunities. Infrastructure spend often sits around cloud hosting, secure collaboration, sensors, inspection equipment and workshop or yard capacity.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying interest often appears when a firm moves from consultancy into asset delivery, wins a framework place, secures a grid-related contract, takes on a new operations brief or hires senior project, finance or compliance staff. Common pain points are project slippage, scarce technical labour, audit burden, contractor management, safety documentation, working-capital strain and the need to prove performance to counterparties. Outbound messages tend to work better when they refer to a concrete trigger and a measurable operational problem: fewer missed maintenance windows, cleaner audit trails, faster bid responses, lower exposure to contract disputes or tighter cash collection. Generic energy-transition copy is easy to ignore in this market.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
