Renewable Energy Companies in Leeds: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Renewable energy companies in Leeds develop, finance, install or operate low-carbon power and heat assets across the city region.
Buying activity in Leeds tends to sit with estates, asset and operations teams rather than household consumers. The main centres are commercial property decarbonisation, distributed generation and storage projects, grid-connection support, and engineering services for wind, solar and renewable heat. Customers are usually public-sector estates, utilities, infrastructure investors, developers and industrial energy users, with work sold as project development, installation, operations support or supply-chain engineering. The 13 firms above £5M turnover suggest that the commercially scaled end is visible, but not dominant; many engagements still look project-led, with lean asset vehicles using contractors and specialist partners.
Leeds has 105 renewable energy companies actively trading, giving the city a relatively concentrated cohort rather than a broad utility-style base. Reported employment totals 1,040 people, so the footprint is visible but still weighted towards smaller operators, project vehicles and service firms rather than large employers. The employment coverage is complete across the cohort, which helps compare installers, developers and engineering firms on the same basis. The local picture therefore looks more like a supply-chain and project-execution market than a pure generation-owner cluster.
Ofgem sits at the centre of the operating context where a Leeds business is generating, moving or supplying energy in Great Britain. Licensing brings standard and, where relevant, special conditions, so asset owners and suppliers face a different compliance burden from contractors that only provide installation or engineering services. Legacy subsidy work also remains relevant: the Renewables Obligation is closed to new generating capacity, but accredited stations still face audit and compliance checks and submit generation information for Renewables Obligation Certificates. RenewableUK provides trade-body coverage for renewable-electricity developers and supply-chain firms.
Leeds appears to have a practical renewable-energy base, with installers, engineering-service firms and project vehicles sitting alongside a smaller set of scaled operators. Demand tends to come from estates, developers and industrial users that need decarbonisation work to fit existing buildings, grid constraints and procurement rules. The next phase is likely to favour firms that can combine delivery capability with compliance discipline, rather than pure origination. Consolidation may remain selective, as asset-heavy models and service-led contractors do not always sit comfortably in the same buyer universe.

Key facts
About 12% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (13 of 105 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (17 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Ofgem requires licences for businesses generating, moving or supplying energy, with standard and any special licence conditions applying once granted.
The Renewables Obligation is closed to all new generating capacity, but accredited stations remain subject to audit checks and generation reporting for certificates.
UK renewables generated 50.8% of electricity in 2024, up from 46.4% in 2023, with output reaching 144.7 terawatt hours.
Wind accounted for 29.5% of UK electricity generation in 2024, split between 17.2% offshore wind and 12.3% onshore wind.
The IEA’s Renewables 2024 outlook has annual renewable capacity additions rising from 666 GW in 2024 to almost 935 GW in 2030, with solar PV and wind accounting for 95% of additions.

How Leeds renewable energy companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Leeds renewable-energy firms usually earn through project fees, installation margins, maintenance retainers, development fees and asset-linked revenue rather than a single subscription model. The product is often a bundle of engineering design, grid-connection work, equipment procurement, civil delivery and ongoing operations support. Asset owners may sell generated electricity or heat under contracted offtake arrangements, while service-led firms invoice against milestones, call-off works or term maintenance agreements. Storage and distributed-generation work tends to add optimisation and availability obligations, so margin depends on delivery risk, equipment lead times, connection timing and the contractor’s ability to manage specialist partners.
Who they sell to
Most buyers are organisations with estates, infrastructure budgets or energy-intensive operations: commercial landlords, public-sector bodies, developers, utilities and industrial users. The day-to-day sponsor is typically an estates director, energy manager, asset manager, operations lead or project director, with finance and procurement involved once capital cost, payback and operating risk are clear. Smaller installation and consultancy work may be bought through direct referral or framework-style procurement, while larger generation, storage and grid projects tend to move through formal tender processes, technical due diligence and board approval. Sales cycles are therefore more tied to budgeting and planning windows than to impulse demand.
What they buy
Most Leeds renewable-energy companies tend to spend on tools and services that reduce delivery slippage and evidence compliance. Common needs include project-management systems, field-service scheduling, asset monitoring, metering, billing, finance, health and safety, document control and supplier management. Engineering firms also buy design, planning, legal, insurance and accounting support around contracts, permits, warranties and subcontractor risk. Asset-owning or operations-heavy businesses may add data infrastructure for performance reporting, cyber security for operational systems, and recruitment support for electrical, mechanical and project-management roles. Pitches land better when they connect to site delivery, margin control or auditability, not generic climate positioning.
Why and how to sell to them
Renewable-energy buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when projects move from feasibility into delivery, when a grid connection or planning issue changes scope, or when a new operations burden appears after commissioning. Other useful triggers include senior hiring in finance, operations or delivery, fresh incorporation of project vehicles, and expansion from installation into maintenance or asset management. The commercial angle should be practical: shorten approval cycles, control subcontractor exposure, reduce rework, support Ofgem-related evidence where licensing applies, or give boards clearer visibility over project risk. Claims about decarbonisation alone are usually too broad for this audience.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
