Oilfield Services Companies in the UK: 2,100+ Active Firms (2026)
Oilfield services companies in the UK provide drilling, well, production, pipeline and late-life asset support for upstream energy operators.
Buying decisions tend to sit with operations, engineering, asset-integrity and procurement teams at upstream operators and their prime contractors. The sell-side mix spans drilling and well support, inspection, production maintenance, pipeline work, offshore logistics, decommissioning and specialist engineering. Engagements are usually B2B, project-led or framework-based, with buying cases tied to uptime, regulatory consent risk, emissions performance and crew availability. Scale sits closer to industrial services than software: field teams, certified equipment, logistics planning and liability cover matter as much as advisory work, and the better-fit cohort skews toward suppliers with sizeable turnover and employee bases rather than single-consultant engineering practices.
Around 2,156 oilfield services companies are actively trading in the UK, a cohort shaped by North Sea offshore work and mature-basin asset upkeep rather than purely domestic onshore demand. Reported employment totals 4,614 people across the firms that publish headcount, so the visible workforce is not a full measure of contractor labour used on offshore projects. Commercial scale is uneven: 187 companies report turnover above £5M, while 305 have been incorporated since 2022. That mix points to a long tail of specialist suppliers alongside a smaller set able to support operator-grade procurement, assurance and mobilisation requirements.
Service providers do not have a standalone upstream licensing regime; their regulatory exposure usually flows through the operator licences, consents and project controls they support. The NSTA oversees UK offshore petroleum licensing and consents, including exploration, development, wells, production consents, pipeline works authorisations, and flaring and venting controls. Government review material also links the regime to carbon dioxide storage and offshore hydrogen pipeline transport and storage, widening the adjacent infrastructure context. For suppliers, the practical burden tends to sit in documentation, competence management, emissions controls, permit evidence and audit trails, particularly where work affects wells, production systems or pipeline integrity.
Demand appears tied less to frontier exploration than to mature-basin upkeep, integrity work and the operational costs of keeping offshore infrastructure safe while output declines. Buyers tend to favour suppliers that can document competence, mobilise crews and carry liability, which may leave smaller engineering consultancies competing around narrow specialisms. Consolidation is plausible where complementary inspection, well intervention, logistics and decommissioning capabilities can be bundled for operator procurement. The market also has an emissions-management overlay: flaring, venting and production-efficiency scrutiny should keep compliance evidence close to commercial discussions, even where the underlying job is mechanical or logistical.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (187 of 2,156 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
14% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (305 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The NSTA regulates UK offshore petroleum licensing and consents, including exploration, development, wells, production consents, pipeline works authorisations, and flaring and venting controls.
The Energy Act 2016 provides the statutory review framework for the NSTA’s offshore petroleum and carbon dioxide storage functions, with its remit expanded in September 2023 to include offshore hydrogen transport by pipeline and storage.
The NSTA’s 2025 review refers to net zero obligations, a 50% production-emissions reduction target by 2030 against a 2018 baseline, and stronger enforcement for flaring and venting consent exceedances.
The UK Continental Shelf is a mature basin: 47.7 billion boe had been produced by the end of 2024, while proven and probable reserves stood at 2.9 billion boe and contingent resources at 6.2 billion boe.
Norway remains the larger North Sea comparator, with 2024 production of about 240 million standard cubic metres of oil equivalent, stated as 1,510 million barrels of oil equivalent, the highest level since 2009.

How UK oilfield services companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Most oilfield services revenue is earned through contracted labour, equipment hire, call-out work, engineering studies and project delivery rather than repeatable product licensing. Suppliers may price by day rate, mobilisation charge, milestone, managed-service retainer or framework schedule, with extras for vessel time, specialist tools, certification and standby cover. A small inspection job can look transactional, while well intervention, pipeline repair or decommissioning support may run as a multi-party work scope with formal change control. Gross margin is shaped by crew utilisation, weather windows, equipment availability, insurance, subcontractor cost and the ability to document work to operator and regulator standards.
Who they sell to
Customers are typically upstream operators, licence holders, engineering primes and offshore asset managers, with some demand from infrastructure owners in adjacent energy work. Buying groups usually include operations directors, wells managers, asset-integrity leads, engineering managers, health, safety and environment teams, commercial teams and procurement. Lower-risk work can be sourced through preferred-supplier lists or direct quotation, but safety-critical and offshore scopes tend to move through tenders, technical qualification and framework agreements. Sales cycles often depend on shutdown calendars, vessel availability and consent timing, so a live opportunity may move slowly until a maintenance window, incident response or bid deadline creates urgency.
What they buy
Most oilfield services firms tend to spend on systems and services that keep field delivery auditable and crews chargeable. Common needs include ERP, finance, procurement, tender management, field-service scheduling, asset tracking, maintenance planning, document control, competence management, training records, safety case management, incident reporting, emissions reporting and quality assurance. Larger suppliers also buy cyber security, cloud hosting, satellite connectivity, data management, remote monitoring, rugged devices, specialist insurance, legal support, tax advice, payroll, recruitment and offshore travel logistics. Commercial teams may need CRM and bid-writing support, but operational buyers usually care more about evidence capture, mobilisation planning and controlled handovers than generic sales productivity.
Why and how to sell to them
Oilfield services buyers tend to evaluate vendors when utilisation, compliance evidence or mobilisation friction becomes visible to management. Triggers include framework renewal, a new offshore work scope, decommissioning activity, audit findings, flaring or venting scrutiny, safety incidents, equipment downtime, crew shortages, leadership change or a move into adjacent offshore energy work. Outbound messages usually land better when they attach to a specific operational cost: fewer missed certifications, shorter tender response cycles, cleaner handover packs, lower rework, better crew allocation or faster evidence gathering for operator audits. Generic productivity claims are less persuasive than proof that a supplier can protect uptime, margin and consent-related documentation without adding admin burden offshore.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
