Physical Security Companies in Cambridge: 30 Active Firms (2026)

Physical security companies provide guarding, key holding and site protection services to organisations in and around Cambridge.

Buying usually sits with facilities, estates, procurement and risk teams, rather than a dedicated security-specialist function. Customers are mainly commercial, institutional and public-sector premises that need contracted labour, key-holding cover or managed site routines. Engagements tend to be service contracts built around shifts, lock-up, alarm response and incident reporting, so pricing is tied to labour hours, response windows and premises covered. The relevant providers range from owner-managed local operators to multi-site contractors able to place vetted staff across several customer locations.

Cambridge has 30 actively trading physical security companies, making this a small local cohort rather than a broad regional cluster. Reported employment totals 160 people, which fits the buyer-facing character of the market: labour deployment, supervision and rota cover matter more than proprietary technology. The turnover profile also looks weighted towards smaller operators, with higher-revenue providers relatively scarce. For researchers, coverage is likely to pick up local guarding and key-holding suppliers, plus a limited number of contractors able to handle larger or multi-site briefs around Cambridge.

Private security work in Cambridge sits within the same Security Industry Authority (SIA) framework as the wider UK market. SIA licensing applies where work is supplied under a contract for services and involves a licensable activity; manned guarding and key holding are the most relevant categories for Cambridge providers. Front-line operatives need the appropriate licence, while directors, managers or supervisors may need front-line or non-front-line authorisation when their business supplies security labour under contract. Licence status, subcontracting arrangements and supervision therefore sit close to commercial risk, especially where buyers outsource guarding but retain reputational exposure for incidents on site.

Commercial demand appears likely to remain tied to premises use, insurance expectations and public-sector procurement cycles, rather than technology adoption alone. Local operators tend to compete on staff reliability, response coverage and account management; larger contractors can add breadth, but still face the same licence and labour-cost constraints. Consolidation may be selective, particularly where customers want fewer suppliers across multiple sites. Even so, the cohort’s early-commercial weight suggests plenty of owner-managed businesses will remain visible, with scale-up outcomes depending more on contract retention and supervisor capacity than on software-led expansion.

Key facts

About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (1 of 30 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.

13% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (4 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

Security Industry Authority licensing applies where contracted security work involves a licensable activity, including manned guarding and key holding.

Front-line SIA licences cover individuals doing licensable work, while directors, partners, managers and supervisors may need front-line or non-front-line licences when supplying operatives under contract.

UK security exports reached £12.9 billion in 2024, up 16.6% on 2023 in nominal terms; physical security accounted for 33% of the total, worth £4.3 billion.

Europe was the largest regional export market for UK security exports in 2024 at £6.5 billion, or 51% of the total; North America was second at £2.8 billion.

How Cambridge physical security companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

Cambridge physical security providers earn mainly from recurring service contracts, with revenue tied to people, time and response commitments rather than a single product sale. Work can include static guarding, mobile patrols, key holding, lock-up routines, alarm attendance, reception-style cover and incident reporting. Pricing typically follows guard-hour rates, call-out fees, retainers or blended contract charges by site, shift pattern and required response window. Margins are shaped by wage costs, vetting, training, travel time, supervision and unsocial-hours cover, so contract design matters. A few providers may add installation or maintenance around access control and monitoring equipment, but labour deployment remains the commercial centre of the segment.

Who they sell to

Buyers are usually premises-heavy organisations: offices, laboratories, education sites, healthcare estates, construction locations, warehouses, local authorities and managed property portfolios. The day-to-day sponsor is often a facilities manager, estates director, operations lead or risk manager, with procurement and finance involved once cover becomes contracted or multi-site. Smaller engagements can be won through direct relationships and local referrals; larger or public-sector assignments tend to move through tenders, approved supplier lists or framework-style procurement. Sales cycles vary with urgency: emergency cover can move quickly, while planned guarding contracts usually involve site surveys, licence checks, insurance review, pricing negotiation and mobilisation planning.

What they buy

Most physical security firms tend to spend on systems and services that keep labour deployable, traceable and paid accurately. Useful categories include workforce scheduling, time and attendance, lone-worker monitoring, route planning, incident reporting, proof-of-attendance tools, payroll, HR, training records and licence tracking. Sales and back-office needs are often practical rather than speculative: CRM, tender management, invoicing, credit control, accounting, document storage and insurance support. Operators with mobile patrols may also buy fleet management, fuel cards, vehicle maintenance, uniforms, protective equipment and communications hardware. Recruitment, background screening, employment law advice and health and safety support can be relevant where staff turnover or subcontracting creates operational strain.

Why and how to sell to them

Buying intent tends to surface when a provider wins a new site, loses supervisors to admin, takes on longer shift patterns, enters a tender process or needs better evidence that contracted duties were completed. SIA licence management, staff churn, wage inflation, insurance requirements and incident documentation are recurring pressure points. Sellers usually need a practical angle: fewer missed shifts, cleaner audit trails, faster mobilisation, lower payroll leakage or clearer reporting for end customers. Messaging that recognises thin margins and operational urgency is more credible than broad efficiency claims. Triggers worth watching include new public-sector awards, recruitment pushes, fresh management appointments, expansion into neighbouring areas and changes in subcontracting arrangements.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many physical security companies are there in the Cambridge?
Around 30 actively-trading physical security companies are registered in the Cambridge. Of those, 1 report turnover above £5M in their most recent filed accounts.
What counts as a physical security company in this list?
A company is included when its public website and filed activity descriptions indicate it sells physical security products or services as its primary business — not just because of the SIC code it picked at incorporation. Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest physical security companies in the Cambridge?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest physical security companies in the Cambridge appear at the top of the table. About 1 of the 30 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do physical security companies in the Cambridge actually do?
How does Cambridge physical security compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of physical security populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical physical security companies in the Cambridge?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. The median actively-trading physical security firm employs around 2 people, and median UK turnover across the list is roughly £54k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established physical security companies?
4 of the 30 actively-trading physical security companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the Cambridge list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
