Maritime Companies in Bristol: 27 Active Firms (2026)

Maritime companies in Bristol operate shipping, port, vessel-service and marine logistics activities in a city-region with coastal trade links.

Buying activity clusters around vessel operations and management, port and terminal services, marine logistics, crewing, survey, compliance and technical support for commercial vessels. Customer-side demand tends to sit with shipowners, charterers, freight forwarders, port users, offshore operators and public-sector maritime teams rather than consumers. Engagements are usually operationally close to the vessel or port call: one-off survey or certification assignments at one end, retained vessel-management, crewing and port-support contracts at the other. Procurement is shaped by safety duties, berth-by-berth constraints and the need to evidence compliance before work moves.

Bristol's active cohort is small: 27 actively trading maritime companies. Reported employment totals 224 people among firms that disclose headcount, so the footprint is compact rather than a deep port-services base. Only 3 sit above £5M turnover, while 6 were incorporated since 2022; the city-region combines a handful of revenue-scaled operators with newer vessel-support, marine-logistics and compliance businesses. It is better read as a specialised local supplier map than as a proxy for national shipping or port throughput.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency, sponsored by the Department for Transport, sets much of the operating frame for UK shipping and vessel-service work. Its remit covers maritime legislation and guidance, seafarer certification, the UK Ship Register and Port State Control checks on vessels visiting UK ports and anchorages. For Bristol suppliers, commercial work often overlaps with regulated evidence trails: certificates, vessel documentation, safety procedures and inspection readiness. Foreign-flagged ship inspections also create reporting obligations for eligible owners and operators, so compliance support sits close to day-to-day port and logistics activity rather than as a separate advisory niche.

Bristol's maritime cohort appears weighted towards operational support and compliance-adjacent services, rather than large-scale carrier platforms. That shape tends to favour specialist suppliers with repeat port, vessel and public-sector relationships, but it may limit the number of firms that scale through pure volume. New entrants have been visible, though the local market still looks narrow enough that customer concentration and regulatory competence matter. Consolidation may come through service bundling, with logistics, crewing, survey and documentation under a single contract, rather than through a rush of standalone software or asset-heavy shipping plays.

Key facts

About 11% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (3 of 27 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.

22% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (6 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency oversees maritime compliance through seafarer certification, the UK Ship Register and Port State Control checks on vessels visiting UK ports and anchorages.

Expanded inspections of foreign-flagged ships sit under the Merchant Shipping (Port State Control) Regulations 2011 and Merchant Shipping Notice MSN 1832, with eligible vessel owners or operators required to give 72 hours' notice.

UK ports handled 434.9 million tonnes of freight in 2023, down 5% from 2022 and down 10% compared with 2019.

Global maritime trade grew by 2.4% in 2023 to 12.3 billion tons, with projected growth of 2% in 2024 and an average of 2.4% annually through 2029.

Over 80% of world trade volume is carried by sea, while Asia handled 63% of global container trade in 2023.

How Bristol maritime companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

Bristol maritime firms tend to earn through service fees tied to vessel movements, port calls, crew deployment, technical assignments and compliance work. Pricing is often a mix of day rates, call-out fees, per-voyage charges, retained support agreements and project-based quotes, with margins shaped by labour availability, insurance, safety cover and response times. The offer is usually operational rather than product-led: vessel management, port agency support, marine logistics, survey work, documentation, crewing and specialist technical services. Larger engagements tend to sit close to repeat port users or vessel owners, while smaller jobs are often urgent, certificate-driven or linked to a specific voyage window.

Who they sell to

Most sell into commercial maritime buying centres rather than broad business audiences. Typical customers include shipowners, charterers, freight forwarders, port users, offshore operators and public-sector maritime teams, with decision-making split between operations directors, fleet managers, marine superintendents, procurement leads and compliance or safety managers. Smaller assignments can be bought directly by an operational contact when a vessel needs support, while longer contracts tend to involve preferred-supplier checks, insurance review, safety documentation and pricing scrutiny. Public-sector and port-linked work is more likely to move through formal tendering or framework-style procurement, particularly where safety accountability is explicit.

What they buy

Most maritime firms tend to spend on tools and services that keep operations traceable, staffed and billable. Useful sales categories include scheduling and dispatch software, fleet or asset-management systems, document control, compliance tracking, crew certification management, incident reporting, finance and job-costing, CRM, cyber security, cloud hosting and analytics. Service spend often covers maritime legal advice, insurance broking, accounting, recruitment, training, marketing for specialist tenders and health-and-safety support. Asset-light operators may buy little physical infrastructure beyond communications, laptops and safety equipment; firms closer to port operations, survey or technical support can also need vehicles, inspection equipment, storage, calibration and maintenance services.

Why and how to sell to them

Maritime buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when operational risk becomes visible: missed vessel windows, audit preparation, Port State Control readiness, crew certification issues, customer concentration or a new contract that stretches manual processes. A new operations lead, compliance appointment, headcount growth or move from ad hoc jobs to retained contracts can also open a buying window. Outbound works better when it links to vessel uptime, evidence trails, response time, insurance comfort or tender readiness, rather than generic productivity language. Bristol firms in this segment are often specialist and relationship-led, so proof of maritime context usually matters more than broad claims about efficiency.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many maritime companies are there in the Bristol?
Around 27 actively-trading maritime companies are registered in the Bristol. Of those, 3 report turnover above £5M in their most recent filed accounts.
What counts as a maritime company in this list?
A company is included when its public website and filed activity descriptions indicate it sells maritime products or services as its primary business — not just because of the SIC code it picked at incorporation. Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest maritime companies in the Bristol?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest maritime companies in the Bristol appear at the top of the table. About 3 of the 27 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do maritime companies in the Bristol actually do?
How does Bristol maritime compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of maritime populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical maritime companies in the Bristol?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. The median actively-trading maritime firm employs around 2 people, and median UK turnover across the list is roughly £103k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established maritime companies?
6 of the 27 actively-trading maritime companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the Bristol list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
