Structural Engineering Companies in the UK: 1,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Structural engineering companies in the UK design, assess and advise on safe, efficient buildings, bridges and other structures.
Buying centres sit with developers, main contractors, asset owners and public-sector infrastructure teams rather than a single software-style budget holder. Work is usually procured as professional services: concept and detailed design, structural surveys, temporary works advice, peer review, inspection and remediation planning. Commercial and residential development generates repeat project work, while bridges, estate renewal and complex refurbishment tend to bring longer procurement cycles, more formal assurance and higher professional-indemnity scrutiny. Engagements are often multidisciplinary, with structural engineers working alongside architects, civil engineers, quantity surveyors, building-control teams and health-and-safety advisers.
There are 1,085 actively trading structural engineering companies in the UK, giving researchers a compact but not niche population compared with broader construction consultancy. Reported headcount totals 3,182 people, reflecting direct employment rather than the wider construction labour chain around each project. The cohort spans small specialist practices, multi-discipline engineering consultants and higher-turnover design advisers. Demand tends to move with construction new work, infrastructure programmes, asset maintenance and refurbishment, so workloads can be project-led rather than subscription-like.
Practice is standards-led rather than controlled through a firm-licensing regime. The UK Regulated Professions Register treats Chartered Structural Engineer as an accreditation-based regulated profession, with restrictions applying to use of title rather than to reserved activities. Protected titles include Chartered Structural Engineer with MIStructE and FIStructE designations. Day-to-day compliance is therefore shaped by building control, health and safety duties, procurement rules and professional-indemnity requirements, especially where firms advise on public infrastructure, high-occupancy buildings, bridges, adaptation work or refurbishment.
Future development appears likely to favour practices that can evidence assurance, specialist inspection capability and professional-indemnity discipline, not simply additional design capacity. Clients tend to ask for clearer responsibility across refurbishment, adaptation and asset-life extension, because older structures carry technical and liability risk that is difficult to price. Smaller practices may remain viable where they hold local relationships or narrow expertise, while consolidation among multi-discipline consultants has been a route to broader tender eligibility. The constraint is likely to be qualified engineering capacity, with protected-title requirements keeping the talent pool relatively bounded.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (159 of 1,085 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (67 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The UK Regulated Professions Register treats “Chartered Structural Engineer” as an accreditation-based regulated profession, with reserved activities listed as “None - restrictions apply to use of title only”.
Protected titles are “Chartered Structural Engineer (MIStructE and FIStructE)”, so firm work is shaped more by competence, procurement and liability controls than by a firm-level licence.
ONS reported construction new work in Great Britain at £140.7 billion in 2024, up 1.4%, and construction new orders at £71.7 billion, up 5.6%.
The Association for Consultancy and Engineering reported that engineering consultancy contributed £39.5bn to UK GDP in 2023 and generated over £11bn in global exports.
International comparisons are usually made through broader engineering consultancy, construction or architecture-and-engineering services categories rather than a structural-only classification.

How UK structural engineering companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from fee-based consultancy rather than recurring product sales. Smaller assignments may be priced as fixed-fee surveys, calculations or remedial advice, while larger design appointments are staged across feasibility, planning, detailed design, construction support and handover. Some practices also earn through retained framework positions, expert-witness work, temporary works checking or asset-inspection programmes. Pricing tends to combine day rates, lump-sum project fees and variation claims when the brief changes. Margins depend on utilisation, senior engineer review time, professional-indemnity cost and the ability to avoid unpaid scope creep once drawings, site conditions and client instructions start to move.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually project owners or project controllers: commercial developers, housebuilders, main contractors, infrastructure teams, local authorities, housing associations and estates functions. The decision maker may be a development director, project director, technical director, commercial manager, estates lead or procurement officer, with architects and quantity surveyors often shaping the shortlist. Private work is commonly won through relationships, referrals and negotiated proposals; public and infrastructure work more often passes through frameworks, pre-qualification and formal tendering. Contract size and cycle length vary with project risk. A straightforward extension can move quickly, while bridge, high-rise, hospital, school or estate-renewal work tends to carry longer assurance and sign-off.
What they buy
Most structural engineering firms tend to spend on tools that protect billable time, reduce rework and make technical assurance easier to evidence. Relevant categories include structural analysis software, CAD and BIM tools, document control, project accounting, time recording, resource planning, proposal management and CRM. Practices with site-heavy inspection work may also buy survey equipment, mobile field reporting, drone services, asset registers and secure file-sharing for drawings and photographs. Around the back office, common needs include professional-indemnity brokerage, legal support for appointments and collateral warranties, quality-management advice, cyber security, finance, payroll, recruitment, training and marketing aimed at framework bids or specialist referral channels.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when a practice wins a framework place, takes on a larger design-and-build workload, opens a regional office, hires senior technical staff or moves into inspection-heavy refurbishment. Common pressures include fee undercutting, late design changes, professional-indemnity renewal, document version control, skills shortages and cash collection on staged work. Outbound messages usually land better when they connect to these operational constraints rather than generic growth. Useful angles include improving utilisation visibility, reducing unpaid variation leakage, tightening quality checks before issue, speeding tender responses, evidencing competence for public procurement and helping senior engineers spend less time on administration without weakening technical review.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
