Aerospace Companies in Birmingham: 77 Active Firms (2026)
Aerospace and defence businesses design, manufacture and support aircraft, mission systems and regulated components across the Birmingham metro area.
Procurement tends to sit with engineering, quality, programme and commercial teams rather than a central software-style buyer. Birmingham-area suppliers in this segment usually sell into primes, defence integrators, civil aviation maintenance networks and security or space programmes, with buying criteria shaped by certification evidence, traceability, export-control status and delivery reliability. Engagements are often programme-linked: qualification, tooling, prototype work, batch manufacturing, testing and through-life support can all sit within the same relationship. The more relevant prospects have controlled-item governance, repeat production capability and enough commercial scale to handle export-led contracts without losing the specialist engineering detail that buyers expect.
Birmingham has 77 actively trading aerospace and defence companies across the metro area, a compact local supply base that still spans manufacturing, integration, testing and regulated technical services. Reported employment totals 1,723 people, giving the cohort a visible operating footprint rather than a purely legal presence. Scale appears uneven: some firms have crossed into larger-contract territory, while many remain specialist suppliers selling skills, certification evidence and repeatable processes into wider civil, defence, security and space programmes across the West Midlands and the UK.
Civil aviation work sits under the CAA's safety and certification regime, while ADS flags continuing importance around UK rulemaking, EASA alignment and FAA cooperation for market access. Defence and dual-use activity adds a separate compliance layer: exporters must check whether goods, software or technical assistance fall under the consolidated control list, and licence applications may be needed through the Export Control Joint Unit where controlled items, end-use concerns or sanctions are involved. The consequence is a market structure where quality systems, documentation and export governance often matter as much as machining, integration or maintenance capability.
Qualification-heavy buying appears likely to favour suppliers that can prove process discipline, export-control maturity and engineering repeatability before procurement teams discuss price. Birmingham's advantage tends to be industrial adjacency: aerospace buyers can draw on nearby precision manufacturing capability, engineering talent and West Midlands supply-chain links. Constraints remain visible. Early-commercial firms may find qualification cycles slow, while established suppliers face margin pressure from documentation, audit and certification work. Consolidation therefore seems more plausible than a clean break between start-ups and incumbents, especially where buyers prefer accountable suppliers with traceable delivery history.

Key facts
About 18% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (14 of 77 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
10% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (8 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK aerospace had £30.5 billion of turnover and £20 billion of exports in 2024.
UK aerospace directly employs 104,000 people and supports 6,000 apprentices, according to ADS’ 2024 aerospace outlook.
Civil aviation work sits under CAA safety and certification rules, with EASA alignment and closer FAA cooperation relevant to market access.
Defence and dual-use exporters must check the consolidated list and apply to the Export Control Joint Unit where items are controlled, end-use concerns arise or sanctions apply.
Aerospace products accounted for 53% of UK defence export orders over 2020–2024, making aerospace the largest product category across the period covered.

How Birmingham aerospace companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Birmingham-area aerospace suppliers usually make money through programme-linked engineering rather than pure catalogue sales. Revenue may come from design support, tooling, qualification work, low-volume precision manufacture, repair and maintenance, test services, integration and through-life support. Pricing is typically shaped by fixed-price work packages, time-and-materials engineering, milestone payments and repeat production call-offs under a framework or approved-supplier arrangement. Margins depend on absorbing documentation, inspection, rework and audit costs, so the commercial model rewards firms that can keep traceability and quality evidence attached to each part, component or service activity.
Who they sell to
Typical customers are primes, defence integrators, civil aviation maintenance networks, space and security programme teams, and larger manufacturers looking for qualified subcontract capacity. The first conversation often starts with engineering, quality or programme management, before procurement and commercial teams test price, delivery risk and contractual exposure. Sales cycles tend to be long because suppliers must clear technical review, quality approval, export-control checks and sometimes site audits before revenue follows. Smaller opportunities may come through direct RFQs, while larger packages usually move through approved-supplier lists, framework renewals, portal-led tendering or multi-stage RFP processes.
What they buy
Most aerospace firms tend to spend on the operating systems around regulated engineering: ERP and MRP, quality management, document control, non-conformance tracking, calibration records, product lifecycle management, CAD and CAM, cyber security, export-compliance workflow and supplier-risk monitoring. They also buy specialist recruitment, training, certification advice, technical writing, insurance, legal support, tax and grant advice, and accountancy for contract and export work. On the physical side, priorities can include inspection equipment, test rigs, metrology, secure facilities, tooling, materials handling and IT infrastructure that keeps production, engineering and quality teams working from a controlled version of the truth.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a supplier moves from prototype work into repeat production, wins access to a new programme, prepares for an audit, changes senior operations or quality leadership, or starts handling controlled exports. Common pain points are late documentation, supplier slippage, manual evidence packs, inspection bottlenecks and the cost of proving compliance after the engineering work is finished. Outbound tends to land better when it is framed around programme risk, audit readiness, on-time delivery and margin protection, with enough sector language to reassure technical buyers without pretending to replace their certification judgement.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
