Aerospace and Defence Companies in Bristol: 74 Active Firms (2026)
Aerospace and defence companies in Bristol design, manufacture and support aircraft, space, security and dual-use systems for regulated markets.
Bristol-area suppliers tend to sell through a small set of buying centres: engineering and programme teams at aerospace primes, defence procurement and security buyers, and compliance functions managing certification, licensing and technical assurance. Engagements are usually programme-based rather than transactional, with design authority, systems integration, test, maintenance or specialist support folded into long qualification cycles. The customer base skews business-to-business and public-sector-adjacent, including UK and export customers that need traceability through regulated supply chains. Compact workforces often combine engineering, programme delivery, compliance and technical support, so commercial fit depends as much on accreditation and exportability as on product scope.

Bristol has 74 actively trading aerospace and defence firms in this list, a compact local cohort rather than a broad regional population. The reported employment footprint is 780 people, pointing to a base of specialist engineering and support teams rather than labour-intensive manufacturing at every site. Revenue scale is uneven: 11 firms report turnover above £5M, while 13 were incorporated since 2022. That mix leaves the city with some established suppliers, but also a visible layer of newer entrants still working through qualification, sales and export pathways.
Civil aviation activity falls under CAA safety and certification oversight, and Bristol suppliers exposed to aircraft programmes need to plan around certification authority as well as customer approval. ADS has pointed to the importance of alignment with EASA and cooperation with FAA processes for market access, particularly where UK-developed components or services move into overseas programmes. Defence, security and dual-use exports add a separate control layer. Exporters must check the consolidated control list and seek Export Control Joint Unit licences where goods are controlled, end-use concerns arise or sanctions apply; exporting controlled items without the correct licence is a criminal offence.
Bristol’s aerospace and defence base appears set to remain specialist rather than broad-based. Procurement tends to favour suppliers that can document provenance, assurance and export-control treatment, which may slow younger entrants but protect qualified incumbents from purely price-led competition. The scarcity of scaled firms suggests acquisition and partnering will continue to matter for access to programmes, facilities and overseas customers. Civil certification alignment and defence export licensing also look likely to shape product planning earlier in the sales cycle, especially for firms sitting between aircraft, security and space applications.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (11 of 74 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
17% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (13 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Civil aerospace certification sits with the CAA, with ADS noting that alignment with EASA and closer FAA cooperation matter for market access.
Controlled defence and dual-use exports require checks against the consolidated list and licensing through the Export Control Joint Unit where controls, end-use concerns or sanctions apply.
GOV.UK reports UK defence export orders of £13.2 billion in 2024, up from £11.9 billion in 2023.
Aerospace products accounted for 53% of UK defence export orders over 2020–2024.
Europe accounted for 38.4% of UK defence exports by value over 2020–2024, the largest regional market in GOV.UK’s series.

How Bristol aerospace and defence companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from programme-funded engineering, design and manufacturing packages, systems integration, test services, through-life support, and specialist consultancy rather than high-volume product sales. Civil aerospace work is often tied to certified components, modification packages or maintenance support, while defence and security work may include dual-use hardware, embedded systems, assurance and secure integration. Pricing tends to be built around fixed-price work packages, time-and-materials engineering support, retainers for specialist availability, or milestone payments linked to acceptance gates. Margins depend on utilisation, change control and the ability to reuse design artefacts across programmes without breaching customer confidentiality or export-control limits.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually programme managers, engineering directors, commercial leads, supply-chain heads, security officers and compliance teams inside primes, public bodies and specialist platform owners. Smaller suppliers may enter through subcontractor frameworks or partner-led bids, while more mature firms handle direct negotiations after qualification. Sales cycles tend to be long because technical acceptance, security checks, financial diligence and export classification sit alongside price. Contract values vary by scope: a consultancy engagement may be relatively modest, while integration, test or production support can run as a multi-year programme. RFPs, approved-supplier lists and repeat work from existing programmes matter more than self-serve purchasing.
What they buy
Most Bristol aerospace and defence firms tend to spend on tools that reduce programme risk and evidence compliance: quality management, document control, product lifecycle management, requirements tracking, configuration management, cyber security, secure collaboration and audit trails. Engineering teams also buy simulation, testing, lab equipment, cloud or on-premises compute, and specialist data storage where export-control and customer restrictions allow. Commercial and finance teams need bid management, contract management, revenue recognition, purchasing, inventory and project-accounting systems. Outside software, common supplier categories include certification advice, export-control legal support, security vetting, technical recruitment, contract engineering, calibration, insurance and facilities able to handle restricted or safety-critical work.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when a supplier wins a place on a new programme, expands from design into production support, opens an export route, appoints senior programme or compliance staff, or needs to evidence security and quality controls for a customer audit. Outreach tends to land better when it connects to a concrete gate: certification submission, bid deadline, supplier approval, export-licence application, cyber assessment or capacity constraint. Generic productivity claims are easy to ignore in this market. Sellers usually need to show how their offer fits controlled documents, traceable decisions, segregated customer work and long programme retention, without asking the buyer to rework established assurance processes.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
