Aerospace Defence Companies in London: 300+ Active Firms (2026)
Aerospace defence companies design, support and supply aircraft, systems and controlled components for civil and defence markets around London.
Procurement tends to sit with engineering, airworthiness, programme-management and security buyers rather than a single IT or facilities budget. Around London, the more plausible matches sell into civil aviation operators, defence primes, government-facing security programmes and dual-use supply chains, with engagement models split between design authority work, certification support, component supply and specialist maintenance. Contract values are usually project- or framework-led, not transactional: small expert teams can carry high revenue per employee where work is safety-critical or export-controlled, while engineering employers need enough bench depth to pass customer assurance and delivery scrutiny.
London has 389 actively trading aerospace defence companies, making this a compact but sizeable specialist cohort rather than a broad manufacturing base. Reported employment totals 2,317 people, which points to a market weighted towards design, support, systems integration and controlled-component activity rather than volume production. Only 41 companies report turnover above £5M, and 88 have been incorporated since 2022. That mix matters for researchers: the cohort contains a visible early-commercial layer, but the revenue-qualified group is narrow enough that due diligence is likely to focus on certification scope, export-control exposure and customer concentration.
Civil aviation work sits with the CAA for safety and certification, and ADS treats certification alignment with European and US practice as part of market access rather than an administrative afterthought. Defence and dual-use exports add a separate control layer. Exporters need to check whether goods, software or technology are controlled, whether end-use concerns apply, and whether sanctions restrict the shipment. Licensing under the Export Control Act and Export Control Order is not optional where controls bite; exporting without the correct permission can be a criminal offence. That structure favours firms with audit trails, configuration control and staff who understand controlled technical information.
Development appears uneven rather than broad-based. Specialist engineering and certification capability tends to travel well in export and prime-contractor channels, but regulated procurement makes sales cycles slow and evidence-heavy. Early-commercial firms may find London useful for customers, finance and government-facing work, while production-led businesses often need capacity outside the capital. Scarcity of scaled manufacturers suggests acquisition and partnership may remain more common than independent expansion. Firms that can evidence compliance, traceability and supportability should be better placed than thinly staffed resellers.

Key facts
About 10% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (41 of 389 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
22% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (88 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The CAA oversees civil aviation safety and certification, with EASA alignment and FAA cooperation affecting certification routes for aerospace suppliers.
Defence and dual-use exports may need licences from the Export Control Joint Unit under the Export Control Act 2002 and Export Control Order 2008.
ADS’ 2024 aerospace outlook puts UK aerospace at 104,000 direct employees, 6,000 apprentices, £30.5 billion in turnover and £20 billion in exports.
UK defence orders reached £13.2 billion in 2024, up from £11.9 billion in 2023; annual orders averaged £9.3 billion over 2020–2024.
Aerospace products accounted for 53% of UK defence export orders over 2020–2024, while Europe represented 38.4% of UK defence exports by value over the same period.

How London aerospace defence companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Aerospace and defence firms usually earn through project fees, framework call-offs, support retainers, component supply and engineering day-rate work rather than high-volume online sales. Revenue may come from design packages, test and qualification activity, managed maintenance, spares, technical documentation or integration work around a wider aircraft, platform or mission system. Pricing tends to reflect risk transfer: fixed-price work is common where scope is tightly specified, while research, certification and problem-solving engagements often use milestones, time-and-materials or costed change control. Margins depend less on marketing reach than on scarce engineering judgement, traceability, approved processes and the ability to keep cleared or safety-aware staff available when customer programmes slip.
Who they sell to
Most sellers in this segment deal with civil aviation operators, defence primes, government-facing security teams, specialist manufacturers and tiered suppliers. The buying group is usually technical before it is commercial: engineering directors, airworthiness managers, programme managers, quality heads, commercial managers and security stakeholders all tend to shape requirements. Procurement can be direct where the work is specialist, but larger opportunities often pass through approved supplier lists, framework agreements, pre-qualification questionnaires and formal tenders. Sales cycles are commonly long because buyers need evidence of capability, insurances, quality systems, export-control handling and past delivery. Smaller orders may start as consultancy or urgent support before widening into retained engineering or supply-chain roles.
What they buy
Most aerospace and defence firms tend to spend on tools and services that reduce delivery risk and make assurance easier to evidence. Relevant categories include quality management software, requirements and configuration management, engineering document control, cyber security, secure collaboration, project cost tracking, CRM, bid management, finance systems and HR systems for specialist recruitment. Many also need legal advice on contracts and export controls, accountancy support for project revenue recognition, technical writing, certification consultancy, insurance broking and facilities support for controlled workspaces. Engineering employers may buy recruitment services for systems, safety, avionics, mechanical, quality and programme roles, while smaller consultancies often need outsourced finance, compliance and sales operations before they need heavier enterprise systems.
Why and how to sell to them
Aerospace and defence buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a bid is approaching, a customer audit exposes gaps, a certification path changes, a controlled export is planned, or a programme moves from prototype support into repeat delivery. Funding, senior engineering hires and new quality or security appointments can also signal intent, though many firms buy cautiously until a contract is visible. Outbound works better when it speaks to auditability, bid readiness, traceability, staff utilisation and delivery assurance rather than generic productivity. A credible pitch should show how the offer fits gated procurement, controlled information, long project records and customer evidence packs, because weak documentation can slow revenue even when the engineering work is sound.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
