Machinery Companies in London: 600+ Active Firms (2026)
Machinery companies design, supply and service industrial equipment for manufacturers, utilities and commercial sites across London.
Buying centres tend to sit with engineering, plant, facilities and procurement teams, with sales shaped by specification, installation risk and aftercare rather than by catalogue ordering. The better-fit London suppliers usually sell business-to-business into manufacturers, utilities, construction operators, logistics sites and commercial facilities across Great Britain. Engagements are typically mid-market in character: equipment supply, installation, servicing, spares and plant-support contracts, often with technical documentation and conformity evidence attached. Automation and mechanical-engineering specialists sit alongside distributors and maintenance providers, so the commercial motion ranges from tendered capital projects to recurring service agreements.
London has 616 machinery companies actively trading, making that count the relevant active-company base for this list. Reported headcount across the headcount-reporting cohort totals 1,928 people, which points to a market weighted towards specialist engineering, sales and field-service teams rather than very large works. The turnover profile is split: 64 firms report more than £5M in revenue, while most sit outside that higher-turnover band. A further 116 have been incorporated since 2022, suggesting a continuing stream of new distributors, service providers and automation specialists alongside older industrial equipment businesses.
Firms placing industrial equipment on the Great Britain market have to work within the Supply of Machinery safety regime. GOV.UK guidance puts the emphasis on essential health and safety requirements, conformity assessment, a declaration of conformity and the relevant conformity marking before equipment is placed on the market or put into service. HSE guidance adds the practical obligations: safe design and construction, a technical file, appropriate marking, English instructions, and a Declaration of Conformity or Incorporation. Enforcement sits with HSE and local trading standards depending on field of use, while policy sits with the government department responsible for business and trade. CE marking recognition for many goods has been extended indefinitely where applicable.
Demand appears likely to favour suppliers that can combine equipment knowledge with installation, maintenance and conformity support, especially where buyers want fewer hand-offs between specification and service. The London cohort tends to look fragmented, with many firms closer to specialist distribution or field engineering than full-scale manufacturing. That shape may limit the number of scale-up stories, but it also leaves room for consolidation around spares, automation retrofits and compliance-heavy service contracts. Firms with documented processes, repeat service revenue and sector-specific engineering expertise should be better placed than generalist equipment resellers.

Key facts
About 10% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (64 of 616 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
18% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (116 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Machinery supplied in Great Britain is principally governed by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with requirements covering essential health and safety, conformity assessment, declarations of conformity and conformity marking.
GOV.UK says CE marking recognition for many goods has been extended indefinitely in GB, allowing CE or UKCA marking beyond 31 December 2024 where applicable.
The UK machinery and equipment sector represents 7.0% of UK manufacturing value added, 6.1% of manufacturing employment and 10.3% of manufacturing exports.
Wider sector employment stood at 163,000 in 2021, down 28,000 from 2011.
The UK was the 10th largest global exporter of machinery and equipment goods in 2022, with a 2.6% global market share.

How London machinery companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a blend of equipment margin, engineering labour, installation fees, spares and service contracts. London machinery firms often sit between manufacturers and end users: they may design or assemble specialist kit, distribute imported equipment, modify standard machinery for a site, or keep plant running after installation. Pricing tends to follow the risk profile of the job. Commodity parts are quoted and fulfilled quickly, while bespoke builds, automation work and retrofit projects need site surveys, drawings, method statements and acceptance testing. Aftermarket revenue matters because buyers expect response times, documented servicing and access to replacement parts long after the initial sale.
Who they sell to
Typical customers are operations-led organisations with physical assets: factories, utilities, construction operators, logistics sites, workshops and large commercial facilities. The first conversation may be with an engineering manager, plant manager or facilities lead, but budget approval often moves through procurement, finance and health and safety teams. Lower-value spares and maintenance work can be bought through approved supplier lists or repeat purchase orders. Larger machinery, automation and installation projects tend to involve competitive quotes, technical specification reviews, site visits and risk assessments. Sales cycles are therefore split between quick repeat orders and slower capital projects where downtime, liability and conformity evidence weigh heavily.
What they buy
Most machinery firms tend to spend on systems that help them quote accurately, manage stock, schedule engineers and document technical work. Useful software categories include CRM, quoting and configuration tools, ERP, inventory management, field-service management, job costing, document control, quality management and finance systems. Firms handling machinery conformity also need legal, insurance, health and safety, testing, certification and technical-writing support. Recruitment is often practical rather than generalist, especially for mechanical engineers, controls engineers, service technicians and salespeople who can read a specification. Marketing spend is usually more effective when it supports tenders, specification documents, buyer education and repeat aftermarket sales rather than broad consumer-style awareness.
Why and how to sell to them
Machinery buyers tend to evaluate vendors when manual coordination starts to create delivery risk: missed service visits, weak stock visibility, slow quote turnaround, poor margin control or gaps in technical documentation. Triggers worth watching include new service leadership, warehouse or workshop expansion, a move into installation-heavy work, more tender activity, and a shift from one-off equipment sales towards contracted maintenance. Outbound usually lands better when it is tied to operational cost and risk rather than abstract productivity. Messages that reference downtime avoidance, engineer utilisation, parts availability, audit trails and conformity evidence are more credible than generic growth claims, provided they fit the firm's actual machinery niche.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
