A&D Companies in Southampton: 74 Active Firms (2026)
Aerospace and defence companies in Southampton design, manufacture and support aircraft, systems and controlled dual-use equipment.
Procurement usually sits with engineering, programme, operations and commercial teams rather than a single software-style buyer. Southampton-area suppliers tend to sell into civil aviation, defence, security and space supply chains, with engagements shaped by qualification, integration risk and support obligations. The most relevant buyers are mid-market manufacturers, prime-contractor supply-chain teams, maintenance and repair operators, and public-sector or defence-adjacent procurement groups. Typical work is not transactional: design packages, certified components, mission-system integration and through-life support often require evidence of quality systems, traceability, export-control screening and the ability to keep specialist engineering capacity available through programme changes.
Southampton has 74 actively trading A&D companies in this list, a compact local cohort rather than a broad regional manufacturing base. Reported employment totals 737 people, with all reporting firms disclosing headcount, so the visible footprint is more than a set of dormant design vehicles. The pattern fits a city-area supply chain of specialist engineering, integration and support businesses: enough operating capacity to serve aviation and defence programmes, but not the scale of a national cluster. The comparison base should stay tight: this is the local active-firm base, not a proxy for the wider UK aerospace or defence economy.
Civil aviation work brings CAA certification and continuing-airworthiness expectations, while defence and dual-use activity brings a separate export-control layer. ADS has argued that CAA rulemaking and certification authority, alignment with EASA and closer FAA cooperation matter for market access, particularly for suppliers moving parts, software or technical know-how across borders. GOV.UK guidance puts the burden on exporters to check the consolidated control list and seek Export Control Joint Unit licences where goods, software, technology, end-use concerns or sanctions require it. Unlicensed export of controlled items is a criminal offence, so compliance is a market-access condition rather than back-office paperwork.
Qualified specialists appear better placed than broad new entrants. Aerospace and defence buyers tend to reward production discipline, traceability and programme familiarity, which makes switching suppliers slower than in many industrial markets. At the same time, export screening and civil certification keep compliance costs in the foreground, especially for firms handling dual-use technology or safety-critical components. Scale-up scarcity may leave Southampton with a layered base: some larger employers, many engineering-led specialists and occasional newer firms built around technical niches. Consolidation is plausible where owners need succession options or customers want fewer suppliers.

Key facts
About 10% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (8 of 74 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
9% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (7 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Civil aviation safety and certification sit with the UK Civil Aviation Authority, with EASA alignment and closer FAA cooperation relevant to market access.
Defence and dual-use exporters must check the consolidated list and apply to the Export Control Joint Unit where controlled items, end-use concerns or sanctions trigger licensing.
UK defence orders reached £13.2 billion in 2024, after £11.9 billion in 2023, with annual UK defence orders averaging £9.3 billion over 2020–2024.
Aerospace products accounted for 53% of UK defence export orders over 2020–2024, making aerospace the largest defence export product category across that period.
The UK aerospace industry is export-driven, with 70% of domestic aerospace production exported in 2023.

How Southampton A&D companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Southampton-area aerospace and defence firms earn revenue from engineering services, component manufacture, integration work, maintenance support and specialist consultancy. Commercial models are usually built around project milestones, time-and-materials engineering, fixed-price work packages, spares, repair contracts or multi-year supply agreements. Margins depend on utilisation, qualification cost and the ability to keep technical staff available between programme phases. A small software or data element may sit inside mission systems, diagnostics or support tooling, but most propositions are still sold as engineered outputs, certified parts, test evidence, documentation packs and continuing support rather than pure subscriptions.
Who they sell to
Most suppliers sell to engineering-led buying groups inside civil aviation, defence, security and space supply chains. Typical stakeholders include engineering directors, programme managers, quality leads, procurement teams, commercial directors and, where systems or data are involved, CTO or security roles. Deals tend to move through direct sales, approved-supplier lists, technical evaluations, RFPs and framework-style procurement rather than self-serve channels. Sales cycles are often measured in months, with early conversations focused on qualification, evidence, capacity, export screening and the buyer’s confidence that a supplier can keep supporting a programme after the first order.
What they buy
Aerospace and defence firms tend to spend on systems that control traceability, quality evidence, project cost, supplier risk and technical documentation. Common buying categories include ERP and MRP, quality management, product lifecycle management, document control, secure collaboration, CRM, bid management, finance, HR and workforce planning. Operational buyers also need calibration, metrology, testing, certification support, cyber security, cloud hosting, backup, specialist recruitment, legal advice, export-control support and accounting services. Firms with production or maintenance activity may also buy facilities services, machine maintenance, health and safety support, insurance, training and logistics capability tied to regulated parts movement.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when aerospace and defence suppliers win a new work package, enter an approved-supplier process, prepare for a CAA-related audit, expand into export-controlled work, add engineering headcount or replace manual spreadsheets with more auditable systems. Pain points are usually practical: long qualification cycles, document burden, scarce specialist labour, margin pressure on fixed-price work, customer audits and the risk of production delays from supplier or compliance failures. Outbound messages tend to land better when they reference programme assurance, traceability, bid readiness, audit preparation, utilisation or export-control workflow rather than generic productivity claims.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
